People claiming God talked to and directed them has a bad history. Like Jim Jones, David Koresh, Heaven's Gate, the Crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, Joan of Arc, Rasputin, and on and on. Questioning such a claim by Pence is reasonable, though the mockery, even given the woeful past, may have been unnecessary. Having been a Christian all my life, the literal hundreds of times over the decades people have tried to force their will and ideas on others by saying "God put it in my heart" or "God spoke to me" for often the most venal reasons puts me off such claims. There have definitely been times in my life where I felt I was moved by God to do or say certain things, yet putting the imprimatur that it was God's command or desire would have been hubris. You must see how psychologically believing such a thing means you are right beyond any question or even qualms of conscience.
