A thread in the main section used the word, "to," in its title where, "too," should have been used. As in, "too many." For some reason one poster took umbrage with it and the whole thread unraveled from the original subject and went into a whole diatribe on English usage. I'm thinking most of us do know the difference but we get caught up in the moment or get a little, 'fat fingered,' and leave typos more often than intentional goofs.

With that said, I do see, "then," and, "than,' used interchangeably a LOT! "Your," and, "you're," along with, "there," "they're," and, "their." I don't see, "two," used where, "to," or, "too," belong but I think I may actually be the last living American who knows the difference between, "affect," and, "effect."

My real pet peeve though is repetitive redundancies. "HIV v***s," "PIN number," "ATM machine," to list a few. I grit my teeth heavily over, "point in time," too. My all time favorite though has to be, "hot water heater." If the water is already hot, why do you need to heat it?

Soap box folded and put away. Thanks for listening.

My deepest and sincerest apologies. I don't listen very well.

You wanted to grouse about something?

My favorite peeve is misuse of the word "of" for "have," e.g. "I could of done it differently.", or "You should of said something.". Lots and lots of people get that wrong, including many on this forum. I don't think they're typos or mindless mistakes, either. I think they just don't know that what they are trying to do is use the contractions "could've" (instead of "could have" ) and "should've" (instead of "should have" ).

I've been hearing in the media for a couple years, what sounds like a grammatical error to me, or I may have been incorrect for a lifetime.

A couple examples:

"The family say they don't travel too far to town.."

"The group found their name tags on the table..."

Shouldn't it be, "The family members say..."
And
"The members of the group found..."

Or am I illiterate, too?

The most over used is "got". I got the present as opposed to I received the present. I got the grocers as opposed to I bought the groceries and on and on and on with the I got.

I got has gotten to me. :hunf: :x

I will go with your version. I am V E R Y old school. It shows up in my writing with things such as, Do you not find it interesting? Not a direct assailment; however, I am incapable of using a contraction in writing. I literally was forced to tell one of my tutoring students, "because I say so". He kept arguing about the fact he can use contractions in conversations and found no reason he could not in writing. Point of laughter is, our cohort Slatten once sent a message to me using as many possible contractions as he could find. Suffice to say, he rrrrreeeeeggggggrrrrrreeeeettttttteeeeddddd his behavior.  :-o
