[quote=Blade_Runner] "I do not take issue with McCain's service as a Navy pilot and his suffering in the Hanoi Hilton. I do not see him as a t*****r. But as a politician, he was a misguided fool."

Blade, we have always agreed on your first two statements, above. On the third, I often (not always) disagreed with his political decisions.

Veterans Group Calls Out Trump's 'Outrageous' Response To John McCain's Death.

AMVETS, one of the country’s largest veterans organizations, blasted President Donald Trump on Monday over his lackluster response to the recent death of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

The organization, also known as American Veterans, tweeted that it was “deeply disappointed in the lack of traditional and appropriate respect in the White House’s reaction” to the decorated Vietnam veteran’s death.

“AMVETS is calling on the White House to show appropriate respect for the passing of Sen. McCain,” AMVETS tweeted. “He was a war hero, twice a p**********l contender, and a national treasure who dev**ed his entire adult life to protecting and improving the American way of life.”

Trump has faced significant backlash over his response to McCain’s death. He issued a curt tweet on Sunday wishing McCain’s family well, though not mentioning anything about the late Arizona lawmaker’s legacy.

White House f**gs were lowered to half-staff after McCain’s death on Saturday, but returned to full-staff early Monday. The White House was operating under a protocol of keeping the f**g at half-staff for a day and a half following the death of a sitting member of Congress. Anything beyond that would require a p**********l proclamation ― a relatively simple order to draft but one that Trump does not appear to have much interest in.

U.S. Capitol f**gs remained at half-staff through McCain’s interment on Sunday, said a spokesman for House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

The White House is openly showcasing its blatant disrespect for Senator McCain’s many decades of service and sacrifice to our country as well as the service of all his fellow veterans. Joe Chenelly, AMVETS National Executive Director

Trump didn’t hide his longtime disdain for McCain, one of Trump’s most outspoken Republican critics. He made headlines in summer 2015 ― soon after announcing his p**********l run ― when he mocked McCain’s military record during a political forum in Iowa. Trump suggested McCain wasn’t a “war hero” because he was captured in Vietnam and held as a prisoner of war for over five years.

Though former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama are slated to give eulogies at McCain’s funeral on Sunday, Trump will not be in attendance, according to a spokesman for McCain. The Arizona senator reportedly dis-invited Trump to his funeral months ago.

AMVETS has been critical of some Trump administration decisions previously, including the president’s appointment of a Defense Department official to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs after David Shulkin was booted from the position. But the organization’s flurry of tweets on Monday marks an escalation in their criticism of the president.

“It’s outrageous that the White House would mark American hero John McCain’s death with a two-sentence tweet, making no mention of his heroic and inspiring life,” AMVETS National Executive Director Joe Chenelly said in a statement Monday.

He continued: “And by lowering f**gs for not one second more than the bare minimum required by law, despite a long-standing tradition of lowering f**gs until the funeral, the White House is openly showcasing its blatant disrespect for Senator McCain’s many decades of service and sacrifice to our country as well as the service of all his fellow veterans.”

The American Legion, another prominent veterans organization, also called on Trump to issue an “appropriate” proclamation honoring McCain’s legacy and ordering the nation’s f**gs be lowered to half-staff through the interment of his body.

“The American Legion urges the White House to follow long-established protocol following the death of prominent government officials,” Denise Rohan, national commander of The American Legion, said in a statement.

“Mr. President, just this year, you released p**********l proclamations noting the deaths of Barbara Bush and Billy Graham,” she continued. “Senator John McCain was an American hero and cherished member of The American Legion.”

Veterans of Foreign Wars, the largest and oldest war veterans organization, also called on Trump to continue honoring McCain.

“The U.S. F**g Code calls for lowering the f**g to half-staff on the day of and the day after the death of a member of Congress,” a VFW spokesman stated. “That the White House did on Saturday and Sunday. We have asked the White House if the honor could be extended. No response back yet.”

This is a developing story.*

*It has just (3 PM) been released that the White House will return its f**g to flying at half-mast in honor of Senator McCain.

Heck, the f**g would even be flown at half mast if Trump were to die

The White House f**g WAS flown at half staff!!!! The complaint is regarding how long it was flown at half staff.

Here are the regulations regarding flying the f**g at half staff. Note the 4th paragraph. This is exactly what was done!

March 1, 1954, President
Dwight Eisenhower issued a proclamation on the proper times.

The f**g should fly at half-staff for 30 days at all federal buildings, grounds, and naval
vessels throughout the United States and its territories and possessions after the death
of the president or a former president.

It is to fly 10 days at half-staff after the death of
the vice president, the chief justice or a retired chief justice of the United States
Supreme Court, or the speaker of the House of Representatives.

For an associate justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former vice president, the
president pro tempore of the Senate, the majority leader of the Senate, the minority
leader of the Senate, the majority leader of the House of Representatives, or the minority leader of the House of Representatives the f**g is to be displayed at half-staff
from the day of death until interment.

The f**g is to be flown at half-staff at all federal buildings, grounds and naval vessels in
the Washington, D.C., area on the day and day after the death of a United States
senator, representative, territorial delegate, or the resident commissioner from the
Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.

It should also be flown at half-staff on all federal
facilities in the state, congressional district, territory, or commonwealth of these officials.
Upon the death of the governor of a state, territory or possession, the f**g should be
flown at half-staff on all federal facilities in that governor’s state, territory or possession
from the day of death until interment.

The president may order the f**g to be flown at half-staff to mark the death of other
officials, former officials, or foreign dignitaries. In addition to these occasions, the
president may order half-staff display of the f**g after other tragic events.
The f**g should be briskly

Wow it sickens me

It is Constitutional protocol for the f**g to be flown on the day of death and one day after FOR A MEMBER OF CONGRESS. To fly it longer would be giving him the honor of one stationed above him in the government. The White house did the correct thing....it has nothing to do with Trump.

From a 'Nam Vet...with respect to all of his political critics (of which I am one), I will post the following statements regarding John McCain.

http://www.historynet.com/bud-day-vietnam-war-pow-hero.htm (go down to where MOH winner Colonel Day spoke of his time with John McCain)

Also, from (Viet) NAM-POWs President Mike McGrath

"I thought you needed to see a message that I sent to some folks who were establishing web pages with completely false stories which had been submitted to them as true stories. They agreed to stop after learning that they had received bogus information.

NAM-POW names of: Jerry Driscoll, Larry Carrigan, and A.J. Myers have been connected, falsely, with the below stories. If any of you see these false stories passed around the net from group to group, please send a copy of this message to the sender and try to get this nonsense and slander of McCain, Driscoll, Carrigan, and A.J stopped.

Next, the false stories of John McCain's conduct. Again, there are false stories floating around the net about McCain. He was never missing from our group for six months.

He never co-operated with the enemy.

We have dozens of us who lived with and around John for his entire time (10-26-67 to 14 March 73). Larry Carrigan, for one, lived with or near both John and Ted Guy. Larry says Ted would never make the statements which are being attributed to him ...and Ted can't set the record straight because he is dead.

We have dozens of roommates who will vouch for the loyalty and courage and conduct of John McCain.

Here is a more accurate story: John had both arms and at least one leg badly hurt on ejection. He was bayoneted near the groin by a soldier as they were pulling him from the lake. After three days of interrogations and no cooperation, he was near death. They found out his father was Admiral McCain. They stopped the interrogations, gave him medical care, brought in a French reporter (with camera), and let him make a statement to his family that he was alive and would recover and come home.

After laying off the rough stuff, and trying to get John to cooperate by the "good guy" treatment for a couple of weeks, they got pissed off that he would not give information or cooperate. So, they threw him in a cell with Bud Day (MOH recipient) and Maj Norris Overly. McCain was in danger of dying from maltreatment. Maj Overly had to nurse both men back to health.

From that point on, McCain resisted just as hard as any other POW. He went through the same interrogations and treatment. His roommates can testify to his valor and patriotism.

In short, I think that the slanderous reports by faceless people (and some are attributed to Ted Guy...which I doubt are true) are from the bunch who are really pissed off that McCain made a political decision to back Clinton when Clinton decided it was time for "normalization" of diplomatic and trade relations, and it was time to have Ambassadorial level representation. To many, that made John a t*****r.

To most, it was just a political reality. It opened the door to better cooperation for a host of areas, including a full accounting of the POW/MIA issue (which is still an ongoing issue today. We have 2,060 yet to account for).

If you want to get the straight story on McCain's conduct, please contact his roommates. Start with the Honorable Orson Swindle at OrsonIII@aol.com. Thanks for helping shut down these phony stories. Again, you can copy this paragraph if it will help."

Thank you for the info. I admit McCain was a Vietnam War hero. It is his betrayal as a Senator which I cannot condone. I expected far more honor from someone who once behaved so honorably under such horrendous conditions when there was excuse for surrendering honor. I feel far more betrayed by McCain than by someone who always was a political animal and never displayed any honor or understanding of honor. He held strong under torture. But sold out when a Senator.

I always was an admirer of McCAIN don’t forget I was a fiscal conservative at one time. I believed in a balanced budget I believed the BS of the democrats are the spenders until the age of the Internet. When actual reseach was available but I am a realist not a phony POS and what I had seen what Reagan had done exploding the deficit by 365% and watched Bush absolutely spend this country into the worst recession since the Great Depression I changed.

I had on many occasions disagreed with McCains ideology but I always respected that guy for his honesty, and his ability to fight for a bi-partisan solution to every bill that came before the senate. He truly was the lion of the Senate he believed in the process and not this phony Republican BS to get a Supreme Court Justice appointed. He h**ed how Mitch McConnell would not allow an Obama Supreme Court nominee to go through the process and have an up or down v**e.
His last show of showing you the kind of man he was. Trump trying to get Obamacare repealed. Mitch McConnell bypassed the process and just put it up for a v**e. McCAIN did not like a lot of things in Obamacare he believed in repeal and replace. He believed let’s get the replacement bill and v**e on it at the same time.
I knew John McCAIN would throw out the thumbs down. He loved this country and he was not going to take healthcare away from 23 million Americans unless the Republican Party had a replacement. But the Republican Party does not care about all Americans justvthere corporate interest. They-can’t win without v**er purge v**er suppression and gerrymandering they c***t.
Only heartless pricks like Trump and McConnell would do that.

It sickens me that he threw his first wife overboard! Ross Perot paid her medical bills! The Regan's were disgusted with McCain when he started carousing with Cindy McCain before he was even divorced from his first wife. Cindy had money! McCain was making $25,000/year at the time. The first wife wasn't good enough after her car accident. He was a player for many years. Facts are facts.

Trump had nothing to do with the f**g honoring John McCain going back to full staff after two days. It is White House protocol that f**gs go up to full staff after two days of honoring something at half staff! The person who cares for the White House f**g was just doing their job. When Trump found out he had it put back to half staff! Naturally, the news media push back helped make that decision.
