Trump’s Tariffs Already Having A Positive Effect, Just Ask Gary Indiana

How many are you familiar with Gary, Indiana? In case you didn’t know it, Gary is the hometown of the Jackson Five. It is also a city that was nearly dead. Like many cities in the United States that have been under Democratic control for many years, it was dying.

Then the “r****t” president stepped in and imposed tariffs on cheap steel that is subsidized by their home countries, allowing them to dump their steel on our markets. Not anymore. US Steel has announced a major investment in the old steel plant located in that city. They plan on making the plant bigger and will add newer more innovative equipment.

The Chicago Tribune reported:

U.S. Steel announced Thursday that it is investing $750 million to revitalize its f**gship Gary plant to gear up for increased demand in the wake of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imported steel.

The company said the investment will make “significant upgrades” to increase efficiencies at the 110-year-old Northwest Indiana plant, which is U.S. Steel’s largest, employing 3,800 workers.

The investment in the Gary plant is part of a $2 billion asset revitalization program at Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel. The five-year Gary project will include building expansion and the installation of new production equipment and technology.

No new hires were announced as part of the plant improvements.

“There are no committed new jobs at this point, but the project will retain the more than 3,800 jobs in Gary,” Abby Gras, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Economic Development Corp., said Thursday.

U.S. Steel Corp. President and CEO David Burritt credited favorable trade policies on steel imports as instrumental to the company’s facility modernization program.

“We are pleased to be making this significant investment at Gary Works, which will improve the facility’s environmental performance, bolster our competitiveness and benefit the local community for years to come,” Burritt said in a news release

I wonder how long it will be before CNN credits Obama for revitalizing Gary. Every day, the economy gets stronger and expands, creating new jobs at a rapid pace. Unemployment is way down and the stock market is strong. But the media will never give credit where credit is due.

Are you a free marketer or are you just running your mouth ? The fact is, these other countries subsidize those industries to keep our workers from working and then put tariffs on American goods to protect their workers. WHAT doncha get about that ? Show me where I am WRONG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come on. You guys of late have been bragging about how fact based you are in these discussions, or was it the other Liberals and not you ?

These guys just can't get a handle on these subject !

While back I asked Peter to explain a comment that he made BOUT how tariffs cause the lost of farm production which he hasn't even attempted to respond !

Fact is tariffs have absolutely no effect on farm production farmers are going to produce no matter what !

Now does tariffs effect agriculture Absolutely they do by driving the prices down a lot of times below break even cost !

Farmers will do everything in their power to produce as much as possible because they can make more money with high yields and low prices rather than low yields and high prices !

Thus tariffs will not effect farm production as Peter says they will !

I know since I've got 60 plus yrs under my belt and I've experienced just about if not every conceivable effect floods drought tariff wars you name it I've seen every thing that can effect farm production !

For the whole time I have been on OPP, I have given the l*****ts ample opportunity to defend what they say. No I have begged them to splain their statements and most of the time they clam up, call me names, or tell me to look up for myself the t***h of what they just said.

You ask me to defend what I say and you can't shut me up. I have to stop myself from writing War and Peace.

What would happen when China's share of the steel market goes to 60-70- 80 % share will steel still be priced cheaply ?

Once they eliminate their competition and they have complete or near complete control of steel then they are in the drivers seat both price supply wise !

Allowing our mfg ability to go by the way side so we can have every thing we buy as cheap as possible will pay a hugh price down the road !

We stand at 4.7% of market share so if there is any competition it isn't coming from us.

What do you mean, Pete??

The United States is the world’s largest steel importer. In year-to-date 2018 (through March), further referred to at YTD 2018, the U.S. imported 7.9 million metric tons of steel, a decrease from 8.1 million metric tons in YTD 2017. U.S. imports in 2017 represented about 9 percent of all steel imported globally, based on available data. The volume of U.S. steel imports in 2017 was more than 25 percent larger than that of the world’s second-largest importer, Germany. In value terms, steel represented just 1.2 percent of the total goods imported into the United States in 2017.

Take a look at this, its a lot better in talking about steel trade..

Because we don't hold a large enough share of the market to be so.
