Trump’s Tariffs Already Having A Positive Effect, Just Ask Gary Indiana

How many are you familiar with Gary, Indiana? In case you didn’t know it, Gary is the hometown of the Jackson Five. It is also a city that was nearly dead. Like many cities in the United States that have been under Democratic control for many years, it was dying.

Then the “r****t” president stepped in and imposed tariffs on cheap steel that is subsidized by their home countries, allowing them to dump their steel on our markets. Not anymore. US Steel has announced a major investment in the old steel plant located in that city. They plan on making the plant bigger and will add newer more innovative equipment.

The Chicago Tribune reported:

U.S. Steel announced Thursday that it is investing $750 million to revitalize its f**gship Gary plant to gear up for increased demand in the wake of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imported steel.

The company said the investment will make “significant upgrades” to increase efficiencies at the 110-year-old Northwest Indiana plant, which is U.S. Steel’s largest, employing 3,800 workers.

The investment in the Gary plant is part of a $2 billion asset revitalization program at Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel. The five-year Gary project will include building expansion and the installation of new production equipment and technology.

No new hires were announced as part of the plant improvements.

“There are no committed new jobs at this point, but the project will retain the more than 3,800 jobs in Gary,” Abby Gras, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Economic Development Corp., said Thursday.

U.S. Steel Corp. President and CEO David Burritt credited favorable trade policies on steel imports as instrumental to the company’s facility modernization program.

“We are pleased to be making this significant investment at Gary Works, which will improve the facility’s environmental performance, bolster our competitiveness and benefit the local community for years to come,” Burritt said in a news release

I wonder how long it will be before CNN credits Obama for revitalizing Gary. Every day, the economy gets stronger and expands, creating new jobs at a rapid pace. Unemployment is way down and the stock market is strong. But the media will never give credit where credit is due.

Anything good happens it is a holdover from Obama. Anything bad happens it is all Trump's fault.

So, as long as Trump keeps tariffs on steel than Gary Indian will be okay. Did Trump say that he was going to have to make steel tariffs permanent for them to work? That means for Trumps tariffs to work we have going to have to pay more for anything made out of steel. So why are you guys in favor of paying higher taxes all of a sudden because that's all that a tariff is. The irony is that you guys are sounding more like liberals of old each and every day. How quaint....

So you could care less if the US steel companies close down so you can have cheap steel products !

Have is ever occurred to you that Chinese steel is produce with really cheap labor is one factor in the equation ?

I've had kinfolk in the Gary steel mills since way back when I was a kid that lost their jobs due to China's cheap steel , but then again you in your quest for cheap steel products could care less !

If you believe in a free market - a company that only exists because of the tariffs imposed on foreign goods is a company on the government dole - and what you would find in socialist countries. And I'm sorry that people are laid off but we either believe in a free market or we don't. You guys need to make up your mind because the US only holds 4.7% of the steel industry world wide while China holds 50% of the steel industry world wide. You've heard of Sampson and Goliath well this is Pee Wee Herman vs the Hulk. It's no contest which begs the question of why our bully decided to pick on someone that is laughing at him.

What would happen when China's share of the steel market goes to 60-70- 80 % share will steel still be priced cheaply ?

Once they eliminate their competition and they have complete or near complete control of steel then they are in the drivers seat both price supply wise !

Allowing our mfg ability to go by the way side so we can have every thing we buy as cheap as possible will pay a hugh price down the road !
