Manafort trial Day 14: Jury 'scared' as it heads home without a verdict

By DARREN SAMUELSOHN and JOSH GERSTEIN

Updated 08/17/2018 05:42 PM EDT

Paul Manafort's trial will stretch into a fourth week, as jurors headed home Friday without reaching a verdict for the second straight day and the judge overseeing the case alluded to "threats" the jury may be receiving.

“I had no idea this case would incite this emotion,” U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III said in an open court hearing, responding to a motion from seven news organizations, including POLITICO, seeking access to sealed materials related to the trial that would have publicly identified the jurors.

Ellis denied the motion, telling the courtroom that jurors were "scared” and “afraid.” As a result, Ellis said, he didn’t “feel right” releasing the names of the 12-person jury.

Media requests for jurors’ names and addresses is not uncommon in high-profile cases, and federal courts have ruled that the information can be made public except under certain circumstances.

The news outlets cited previous rulings that allow for the release of jurors’ names and addresses except in cases “when there is strong reason to conclude that the jury needs protection from interference or harm, or that the integrity of the jury’s function will be c*********d if the jury does not remain anonymous.”

“Here, there is no reason to believe that extraordinary circumstances exist that would justify keeping jurors’ names sealed — particularly after they have rendered their verdict,” reads the motion.

“This is not a case involving organized crime or other circumstances in which the potential for violence or corruption requires an anonymous jury.”

This apparently isn't that unusual and since this isn't a case regarding violent crime it's likely even this judge will honor the request.[/quote

What do you mean, it's not organized crime? The Democrats are behind it aren't they? It's just like always, if they can intimidate the jury, they will and then they'll turn around and accuse the other side of intimidation.]

The judge, T.S. Ellis III, agreed to hear arguments about the disclosure during a hearing scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday.

That doesn't sound like HELL NO to me. But hey, I'm not paying that close of attention so what do I know right...

You're finally catching on, Pete.

And VERY ILLEGAL to boot. Looks like a scheme to blackmail the jury to convict the innocent defendant just to try to get to President Trump.

Mueller has done it before.

How dare they? That info should be sancrosanct even though I, too, would like to know their affiliations. I am worried this hesitation and performance by the jurors may just be an act. If he’s found guilty and Trump pardons him, there’ll be such an uproar. Then they will bring more ridiculous charges against Manafort. He may never get out of solitary confinement. He’s beginning to look sickly.

Are names of jurors public record?
Voir dire- Voir dire refers to the process of jury se******n. Once the jury is chosen, the public has a right to access the names and addresses of all jurors and their alternates. The information is available in the public record, and transcripts of the voir dire jury se******n proceeding can also be obtained. Jun 20, 2018

The Judge doesn't want to release the names in order to protect them from nuts. Why would you assume he would be acquitted? Isn't it more likely that he will be convicted? In that case, which nuts is the Judge protecting the jury from?
I don't think the names should be released, but to say it's unprecedented is misleading, to say CNN and anti-Trump media are becoming concerned Manafort could be acquitted, is what? Your 6th sense? Dribble? Imagination? Did you read it from a CNN article? Maybe Fox is becoming concerned that Manafort will be convicted?
Trump said himself that the "F**e News" outlets are the ones that criticize him. If you lie every time you open your mouth, of course, the t***h is going to be your enemy. Your attempt to protect Trump is having you try to protect a criminal straight from the swamp. He c***ted our government out of taxes. He committed fraud. Is that okay because he is a Republican?

Yes! I remember reading that he was threatened numerous times and had protection. And he stated the jurors had no such protection
