Supporters soon will learn that no one wins a trade war

S.E. Cupp, June 30, 2018

On his HBO show two weeks ago, Bill Maher faced some searing scrutiny over his suggestion that only economic pain would save us from President Trump.

"I feel like the bottom has to fall out at some point. And by the way, I'm hoping for it. I think one (way) you get rid of Trump is a crashing economy." He added, "So please, bring on the recession. Sorry if that hurts people, but it's either root for a recession or you lose your democracy."

Despite the fact that Maher would likely be spared the brunt of that pain, he doubled down last week, saying, "If a recession is what it takes to make Donald Trump not so cute anymore, then bring it on."

I know him personally. Maher is smart and generous — but this was dumb and needlessly cruel. What he could have suggested, though, was that Trump v**ers should get what they've been asking for — a trade war — and all the economic pain that comes with it. And it looks like they might.

In a huge rebuke of Trump's bone-headed tariffs, iconic American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson is picking up and moving the production of its European motorcycles overseas.

The Milwaukee-based company explained that the EU's retaliatory tariffs will add an additional $2,200 to the cost of motorcycles sold in Europe and cost it an additional $30 to $45 million this year.

It's the sort of move that some Trump economic advisers, many Republicans in Congress — and indeed history itself — warned of as Trump began threatening our allies with a trade war.

As for the president, he's cautioning Harley-Davidson and other American manufacturers to leave at their own peril, tweeting:

"A Harley-Davidson should never be built in another country-never! Their employees and customers are already very angry at them. If they move, watch, it will be the beginning of the end - they surrendered, they quit! The Aura will be gone and they will be taxed like never before!"

Is this what Trump v**ers want — American businesses moving overseas, hiring fewer U.S. workers, a never-ending game of bruising retaliatory tariffs and a weakened economy?

The urge to spare them significant pain is a noble one. But even the pleading of House Speaker Paul Ryan, Sens. Pat Toomey, Bob Corker, Jeff Flake, Joni Ernst, Chuck Grassley and many others who know this will only hurt farmers, manufacturers and consumers, has not dissuaded Trump from pursuing this path of mutual destruction.

Whether Trump is in denial about the long lessons of Smoot-Hawley, the ruinous 1930 tariff act which prolonged the Great Depression, or just doesn't care is anyone's guess. I was on CNN this week with one Trump adviser, Jeff Ballabon, who shrugged off doomsday predictions, saying there might be some short-term pain, but long-term gain.

Of course, that's not the lesson of trade wars either. It's that no one wins a trade war.

As Tom Nichols, a professor of national security affairs at the Naval War College, writes in USA Today: "It's a painful way to learn a lesson, but if we're going to have a trade war, we might as well get it over with rather than d**g it out in protracted haggling between the White House and a group of senators trying to save the president from himself. If the farmers of the Midwest want to bait China into buying Russian soybeans instead of American soybeans, so be it."

If we want to shake Trump v**ers loose of their fixation on economic policies that will likely only hurt them, we should say: Let them eat pain.

In 2016, my State was all in for Trump, even before the v**es were tallied.....................but they're plenty nervous right now. Agriculture comprises 60- 80% of our economy, and our farmers are beginning to holler. Fuel and fertilizer prices climbing, interest rates on farm loans rising, added with the bottom falling out of grain prices due to Chinese retaliatory tariffs, and some farmers are already parking their tractors with more expected to follow. Soon, the legislature will be between a rock and a hard place; when revenues drop below expectations, they'll be looking to make substantial cuts in the current budget, as our State Constitution mandates a balanced budget. The GOP controlled legislature typically looks to social programs for cuts to compensate for increases in other programs, but when the revenues aren't there - further cuts to social programs would cause a r**t - a large number of v**ers parents rely on those programs.

She is dead wrong about Harley .They had planned this move two years ago and just used this
news for an excuse.
The trade war began with the Marshal plan and it was won years ago but not by us.All Trump wants is a level playing field. The world has been screwing the working people of America for 50 yrs.and have had the help of politicians and the chamber of commerce and i*****l m*****ts.
If Cupp is a conservative is its the kind that comes from D C.This is the first time in 30 years
that the working people are actually getting a raise.

Wonderful Bike but screw em. They already received a bailout once. Look, I don't know if the tariffs are the right way to go or not. Seems painful but are we to just keep letting other countries screw us? I mean if you were ever bullied and stood up to said bully win or lose, eventually you get respect.

Neither are lower prices at the cost to our workers in jobs and manufacturing. Once again, What is your solution. Trade isn't fair. Hasn't been for a long time. I h**e tariffs but I know no other way to try and level the field. I am glad Trump at least brought the disparity in trade to the eye of the public.I mean the tarriffs other countries slap on many of our products are ridiculous. Yet you defend them but disparage our own.

There is a reason why GOP control may lose its grip. People don't like it when they suffer due to a political partys policys.

We had a system that was working. It was not until Trump announced his tariffs that other countrys decided to put tariffs on American made goods. We now have a crisis that did not need to be. You think other wise and you have the right to think so. What is happening to me directly over the Steel and aluminum tariffs is a 20 % increase in prices I pay for metal roofing. It affects my bids and my bottom line. Just had to throw that in there.

You think he evolved? I just thought it curious that he almost word for word adopted Buchanan's platform--after once being vehemently against it. Of course you cons were was against Buchanan too where you. So I guess there was a great deal of evolution amongst all conservatives even Donald J...

I have no reason to not believe your personal story. Your wrong about tariffs. They have hurt American jobs and manufacturing. That’s a fact. Tariffs were way before Trump. He brought them to the forefront. Did you no we charge a 2.5% tariff on cars and the same countries charge us upwards of 25% on our cars. My business is the best I’ve ever had. So it’s a complicated scenario.

Thanks for the links. I read them with interest. We used to make the things that the world bought. Now we buy the things the world makes.
