Welcome, agree with your positions. You present yourself as a Patriot. If so, get ready for the Trolls. Anything you post that is pro America they will post in with their L*****t agenda. Grow a thick skin, you will need it here. Don't let them get to you, throw it back. Spent thirty-eight years an Army Dog. So welcome aboard Swap.

Hello all ๐Ÿ˜Ž
About a year ago I became aware of OPP and started following it on a daily basis. I had been reading Daily Kos for a while but wondered what the other side of the story was. I want to start by saying that I am not a Democrat nor a Republican, I am an American! I believe that the political divide in this country is counterproductive to our nation and the world and we must put aside derisive rhetoric and come together as the one people we truly are, Americans!
The issues that separate us are not nearly as important as the ones that bind us together and make us one people and nation

I was raised by loving parents on a small farm in S.W. Michigan and learned from my father and mother a work ethic that has served me well my entire life. I have tried to instill that same work ethic in my children to a lessor or greater degree. All you can do as they grow is try to teach by example and simply be there for them. I can truly say that I am proud of all of them! ๐Ÿ‘. A blessing to be sure. ๐Ÿ™

I worked as a salesman and sales manager for most of my life and enjoyed a decent income and life until an injury forced me to retire at the age of 50. I currently live in western New York State with my wife and her mother and our golden-doodle. (Who is the real boss of the family. Lol ). I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1976 for 4 years active and 2 years reserve. Took basic training at Great Mistakes Illinois in February of that year and have been cold ever since. Lol
Most of my time these days is spent on music and reading and the ever present honey- list. I look forward to having positive discourse with you all here on OPP as we come together as the true Americans that we are whether conservatives or liberal.

Thank you for your time.
Otis

If by "true American", you mean, a citizen of the United States of America, then I am one. However, because I have a habit of v****g for Democratic Party candidates, many on OPP will call me a T*****r.

I hope you are able to find the "positive discourse" you are looking for here on OPP. My experience has found it mostly absent, but if you enjoy invective and ad hominem argument, you will find OPP rewarding.

Holland area. I'm pretty unfamiliar with Michigan geography to date.

Watson Hills is about 15 to 20 miles S.E. of Holland between Allegan and Martin. Used to go to Holland when I was a kid to get to the Lake Michigan shoreline. Godโ€™s Country!

I donโ€™t. Not my job. You know if you are a true American or not. If other people disagree, which is their right, screw โ€˜em.
You know the t***h and the t***h is what matters. Or, so says I. ๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜Š

If I might make another quick comment without giving it too much thought. Hemi does seem to put us under a rather dark cloud but, having lived in this Great Country for nearly 80 years, I feel that the extremes politically, morally, spiritually and about every other way are much further apart than they were even 50 or 60 years ago. I don't really know why that is so but I know it is true. Food for thought as they say.
Bernie

Bernie I agree that the country seems to be much more noticeably divided than I ever remember it being before but is it really? Yes, people are bitterly divided over the a******n issue, but that has always been the case. Itโ€™s an issue that brings out very strong feelings from both sides with no easy answers or even a workable compromise. Other than that tho the only real difference I can see from when I was a kid is media. Baby boomers were the first generation to grow up with television. May seem simplistic at first glance but I think media is far more responsible for our present situation than they are being given credit for. And by media I mean ALL media. Food for more thought! โœŒ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Š

Your Your idea has merit, but there is a element in America not supporting our own sovereignty..to me that is a recipe for ruin as a nation..

I think the real bottom line of that is, how big an element? If it is over 50% then I agree, that is a recipe for ruin. I donโ€™t believe that to be the case tho so I believe in live and let live.

I canโ€™t believe the Lake Michigan shoreline could have changed that much? Lol

It might be interesting to have a thread to discuss sovereignty (i.e., the authority of a state to govern itself or another state) and what might threaten it.
