Given Duke’s $19.6 billion in 2012 operating revenues, that’s the equivalent of fining a person with a $60,000 salary a total of 30 cents,” said Democracy North Carolina in a statement.

This is precisely why companies haven't any regard for the damage they do, not only to the environment but the thousands of lives they put in serious danger.

Mac Cory is a typical corporate stooge, lying to the people while in the pocket of big industry. He got in office by gerrymandering from the GOP. legislature. He has already put in place the law to not have to reveal chemicals that will be used when they frack. More toxic poisoning to our waters.

It will be like the old west controlling the water. They'll poison our water so they can sell us back clean filtered water, and the price will go up and up with the more water they destroy.

Just another Republican who allowed corporations to use the state as a toilet in exchange for a rather paltry bribe, nothing new it is just difficult to understand why people elect bottom feeders of this ilk when they know what they are going to get.

I think the real scandal is the NC environmental people told the residents around the Dan river that their water was safe to drink and it turns out a few days later that its not safe to shower with let alone drink... McCrory was trying to sweep this whole spill under the rug ... This is a s**m.. the fact that duke power makes billions in profits and leaves a environmental mess behind without any plan to clean it up . may be good for stock holders but its hurting the people who live here.

If NC Republicans just had the foresight to get rid of those pesky environmental regulations for that industry, like they are wont to do with all industries, their governor would be free and clear right now.

I think they have already trashed the NC clean water act for fracking but the FEDs are getting involved now doing the testing not the state,

Now the Feds have a subpoena and a criminal investigation. That is going to cost something. But it will only be passed on to public. That's how it goes.

This problem should have at least been identified as an economic risk factor and could've easily been mitigated with at least a one-time inspection of all drain pipes. There's recent history of coal ash pond dams breaking so, I hope the investigation shows someone at least inspected any dams. The regulators have always believed it was in the best interest to keep the ash in ponds. The environmentalist were labeled and now the governor is accused of playing a role.

If regulators were watching out for the public, they could have lent an ear to environmentalist and said to clean some of the ponds up, and allowed a rate increase to pay for it or build it into the future cost of coal. It can be buried in lined landfills far away from waterways instead of in open pits near rivers with a drain pipe connected to the public water supply. Maybe that's what will result from this accident and the 14 other coal ash ponds there.

Duck what one. Because a company contributes to the candidate who's policies it most closely supports, is not proof of corruption. Or we would have to convict the entire democrat party for being paid stooges for the unions. The entire democrat party would.have to be convicted.of.campaign fraud with the Stmuli I and II and the t***sfer of GM to union control money laundering schemes.

Oh, and could.you site.a.credible.soutce? Not some Progressive, George Soros funded attack machine.

As you can see from the reply back to you from schoonerpete, this is how and why these people do get elected in.

So you site some nonentity which seems to be formed only to attack Governor McCrory. A Google search of newsobserver.com shows 9 of 10 articles are attacking Governor McCrory. Let me know when the Governor is convicted of something.

I have to wonder why you pin heads don't harp about China. They are building 3 coal power plants a week! And there plants do not have one emission device on them. The water is fungible as is the air. (sorry for the 3 syllable word)

We should put huge tariffs on everything imported from China until they play by the same environmental and labor rules that we do.
