The picture looked like a groundhog to me. I'd get $.25 a hog when I was a kid in Up State NY. My Grandfather and I used smoke bombs on the farm. We'd light the thing, drop it in the hole, cover it with dirt, look for smoke coming out of other holes and cover them up. We'd get the whole family. They were h**ed because beside being able to undermine buildings, cows could break a leg stepping in their holes. I used a .22 WMR w/ 4X scope. Mike

I haven't shot anything in quite a while. Lifetime, I've shot over 250,000 rounds. I really miss it.

That is a gopher. No doubt about. After all, I've shot enough of them.

I was going on the assumption that gophers are nocturnal (when above ground). Where I live, gophers are more likely "moles" and ground squirrels are....well, squirrels.

Kinda' like "pop" or "soda"....depends on what part of the country.

(Still getting the post count up.)

I've been hunting and shooting for 60 years. Am still shooting and as far as hunting goes, I take my Granddaughter to the deer stand and sit with her but I've k**led enough personally but I'm still hunting vicariously thru her. The Grandson will be next in two years. I feel for you, not being able to do what you could, I h**e that too, 20yr. mind a 67yr. body, but I appreciate the sun on my face in the AM. Hang in there tough guy. Mike

It's very therapeutic. I used pictures of people, who really needed to be shot, as targets.

Haven't done much hunting. In fact, I've never seen a legal deer in season. Buck season, I see a lot of doe's. Doe season, I see bucks. Just unlucky, I guess.

Being an avide h****r myself, I can say their are times when I think I should have just stayed home. Then I think that it is more out the good times spent with family and friends than the k*****g of an animal. Although having enough meat in the frezzer to last the year is always a nice plus.
That time I speak of, it goes to the off season as well. That is when you keep track of the moment of the animal's, and their bedding down spots. My grandson now 13 doesn't like the k*****g part, he does however love the hunt. He takes his shoots with a Cannon AE1. Gets some real nice pics to.

I used to have a cabin in the Pocono Mountains. We'd stay there while hunting. Good times. No electricity, or running water, but I didn't mind. We had a well and a fireplace. What more do you need? There was also a creek, or was it a river? It was 50 feet deep and ice cold, even in Summer. There was also a steel girder bridge over it. I used to climb up on top of it and jump in. It was about 60 feet to the water. Stung like mad, when you hit the water, but it was a blast. We also had a tire swing suspended from the bridge.

Mr. B. I hunted with an all black hunt club for about 20 years. I was their token honky. One of the reasons I was with them so long was because I could actually k**l deer. We hunt deer with dogs here in eastern Va. because of so much swamp and thickets. Most of the guys are posted to stands and wait for the dogs to move a deer in their direction. Another guy, Charlie and myself were the only two out of 25 guys who were mobile because we k**led what we shot at. The other guys couldn't hit their foot if they aimed at it. Not to be r****t but they were better at shooting each other away form the hunt than deer and that was a fact. I don't know how many deer I've k**led, a lot. What changed my way of thinking was getting shot at by a kid on his first deer hunt. We were standing a field with a wood in back. I was at the upper left corner, the kid was across the field and 50 yds. down from me. Long story short, doe came from behind the boy, almost hitting him and came across the field. I let the deer get about 1/3 the way across and was going to shout and wave to turn it down the field so everyone would have a shot. The kid was so excited he raised his gun and was aiming directly at me. I screamed to him not to shoot but he did anyway, twice. I heard the buckshot tearing into the branches and briars, there was buckshot kicking up mud between my legs, buckshot was busting everything around me. It was one of the worst sounds I'd ever heard. I know why not one pellet hit me but no one else does. I almost shot back at that kid I was so shook up and angry but I shucked the shells out of my gun so I wouldn't. Since hearing that sound of buckshot breaking around me I've thought twice about k*****g deer. I quit hunting for a long time but now enjoy taking my Granddaughter. She is an accomplished shooter with crossbow, rifle and shotgun. She shoots better than I. Mike

Just remembering.....I qualified, in basic training, with the M14. Targets were 50, 100, 150 and 300 yards. Shot "expert" back then with the standard "peep" sight. Of course, the targets were silhouettes....plenty large at 300 yards. (Might have been meters?)

You and teabag have some good stories! Happy Memorial Day!

I'm sitting on my back porch which overlooks the lake.....kids and grandkids all around. This is truly worth risking ones life to preserve! Thank God for those who paid the ultimate price.

Lucky you, enjoy this Memorial Day weekend with those Grandkids and family. Thank you so much for your service. I used to shoot expert, have trembers and won't shoot at anything but paper or a bad guy coming in my house now. Mike

I'm rated as a master marksman. Sounds pretty awesome, but it really isn't. Anyone with good eyesight and the motivation to practice can do the same. I was a competitive shooter, so I got a LOT of practice. Back then, shooting was my life. I really miss it. I want to get back into it, but I need to get my eyes fixed first. As things stand, I MIGHT be able to hit the broadside of a barn.

OK....we'll use a scope. But, geez...let's drop back to .17 HMR. That 7mm can be $1.50 a shot!

And I know that ain't no gopher!

Sounds like little Boys with their playthings. Did you tell your mommy that you can k**l little gophers at more that 300 yards? Boy! I thought she thought you were a real man.
