Right up there with the couple who bought their emotionally troubled teenage son a forearm for his birthday then acted shocked when he went out and committed a mass shooting…

How is it going in Lahaina? There isn’t much reporting on it.

Life is slowly coming together for the displaced residents. It’s a lot to have on your plate when you have to find an alternative place to live after losing your home and all your possessions, find new employment because the hotel or restaurant you worked at got incinerated, and find and place your children at another school. That’s just the practical stuff. The mental health challenges will take several years to overcome if ever.
But the island community has stepped up and we are going to make it. There are going to be scars of all kinds but they will heal with love and forbearance.

Thanks for asking. The news cycle moves on so quickly.

Good idea, pile it on!

But I just heard they voted to avert. In 45 days we get to do all this again.

I’m not a Democrat but I know something about finance and I don’t see that, at least not intentionally as you suggest. On the other hand there is a small group of far right MAGA arsonists who supported the failed Jan 6 attack on the Capitol and are now trying to burn it down. (Well if you don’t succeed at first…)

How many here support the government shutdown?

How about we support the idea that in the event of a shutdown Congressional paychecks are also suspended so they can taste the pain they are inflicting on everybody else and when it’s over no back pay.

I’m in business and if I pulled a stunt like this with my client and failed to execute my contract my company would be fired and NOT PAID.

Congress has a duty to execute its contract with the American people and is DEFAULTING and expecting to get paid anyway.

Thank you. I am fortunate to live on the north side of the island and my business is in the Central Valley so I and my family are all safe but this disaster has profoundly affected everybody on the island and the state as a whole. Everybody knows someone who was lost in the fire or who narrowly escaped. Houses can be rebuilt and infrastructure restored but the psychological scars will be with us forever. Hawaiian people like all Americans are resilient and this is mostly bringing out the best in
everybody.

I can understand this young woman’s personal distress if she is genuinely a survivor but her emotional diatribe is missing some facts. It’s true that the statewide Tsunami Sirens did not sound but those sirens are pole mounted and powered from the electric grid like everything else. The winds that day gusted as high as 80mph and downed power lines from the Central Valley late in the day. Couple that with the availability of combustible non-native grasses near the town and the fact that most of the buildings on Front Street were built of tinder dry wood almost a hundred years ago and you have the perfect storm, essentially a natural disaster. As to warning, the state sent out an emergency warning that went to all cellphones (including mine) radios and TV’s on multiple occasions throughout the afternoon and evening. Too little and too late perhaps but that is the nature of random events.

Maui has its share of fringe thinkers and conspiracy wannabes but that there is this type of hysterical nonsense breaking out is no surprise. (I’ve already heard other even more outlandish Jewish Space Laser type theories.) Let’s wait until the smoke clears for a more sober analysis and realistic plan to rebuild. I am in touch with some County Officials and I will pass on any credible information even if it conflicts with my initial assessment.

It’s difficult to countenance a segue into culture war issues in the light of the realities on the ground in Lahaina today where there is no power, cell phone reception, landlines, fuel, propane, water or a replacement shelter for the home you lost in the fire. Thousands of people are displaced and temporarily housed in gymnasiums at schools on the other side of the island. Some families have been flown out to other islands to stay with relatives, some residents have flown back to the US mainland after losing employment in westside hotels that have no fuel for back up generators, no potable water supply and little food left. Around 4000 tourists were bussed on Friday to the airport in the Central Valley and put on special flights to mainland destinations.
More than a thousand people are unaccounted for including many friends and clients in the Lahaina area. I had lunch at an oceanside restaurant two days before the fire that is now part of the boulevard of ashes that was once the bustling Front Street tourist area. The death toll is hovering around 100 and expected to climb higher, the hospital morgue is overwhelmed and refrigerated trucks have been repurposed to cope with the overflow, There is a shortage of body bags and extras are being flown in from Honolulu.

The island economy, once the most vibrant in the state will probably take a major hit over the next few months. The causes of the catastrophe are already being debated but in some sense it was just the perfect storm. A freak wind condition generated by a peripheral offshore Hurricane Dora coupled by dried out non native grasses combusting from unknown causes but probably electrical from downed power lines….who knows.

To the oblique suggestion in your post that seems to question man-made climate change I would suggest paying attention to acknowledged experts in the field of climate science by plurality. That is to say the majority. There are always outliers and contrarians who seek attention or profit by going against mainstream thought. Once in a while there is a differing opinion that turns out to be right but history suggests that to be rare.

I'm not dumping anything on Greta, but somebody sure did, and they created another totally distraught and thoroughly misguided teenager. The world certainly has an abundance of very troubled young people.
One need only consider that suicide is the second leading cause of death for children, adolescents, and young adults age 15-to-24-year-olds. Suicide among the young really took a jump during the Covid lockdowns. The psychological and emotional impact this had on our children and teens was enormous, and truly unforgivable.

The love of which I speak has nothing to do with loving the planet.

AGW alarmism is one of the greatest hoaxes ever perpetrated on the human race.

Even Christiana Figueres, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change admitted this isn't about climate change, but about the destruction of capitalism and redistribution of wealth, and she wasn't alone, other leaders of the UN panel said the same thing.

This is the first time in the history of mankind that we are setting ourselves the task of intentionally, within a defined period of time to change the economic development model that has been reigning for at least 150 years, since the industrial revolution. That will not happen overnight and it will not happen at a single conference on climate change, be it COP 15, 21, 40 - you choose the number. It just does not occur like that. It is a process, because of the depth of the transformation.

Are you speaking as a Counsellor or psychologist of some kind? Looking at the tone of your bluster that is a dubious proposition. If you were such a person you would have to have interviewed or performed some kind of psych evaluation of Greta in person.
People get bent out of shape over critics of Trump denouncing him as deranged and psychotic etc. which in my view is an overreach for the same reason.

I don’t believe that. The Dems need to restrain their glee at Trumps diminishing fortunes but if every Dem stepped back you would see all the GOP leaders that want him permanently gone because of the harm he has done to their brand. Trump is in trouble because of his own mischief, nothing else.

Absent your first paragraph I would agree with the rest of your post.
Some feel that love for this fragile blue marble we all live on is valid and existential.
Dumping on young people for harmlessly lobbying for a better world for all of us seems mean spirited and pointlessly vindictive. But I guess you were never young much less idealistic.

If we stop buying and we do it as an organized effort, we could bring down the prices of everything.

When you've already got everything you need, it's easy to follow the advice of, "Just Don't Buy It "

But even if you don't have everything you need, you should consider adopting some of the traits of a miser.

Look up the word miser and understand that every dime you spend is making someone else rich.

A miser doesn’t spend money.

A miser hoardes money

For many years now I have been boycotting a long list of products and businesses.

In doing so, I have hoarded the money that would have been spent on these products and services.

And I know that if everyone in America could follow my simple recipe, we would see the prices of everything take a nose dive.

The entire recipe consists of four words

JUST.......DON'T ...... BUY ......IT

For example, I've recently added FORD to my boycott list.

And I shouldn't have to tell you that Ford trucks have been the preferred vehicle of the average Texas redneck for decades.

But Ford has now gone woke, so you know what ?

Fuck Ford.

I own two Ford trucks but never will I buy another one.

I recently inherited a 2018 Dodge cummins 2500 and I'm completely sold on it.

I'm gonna drive that damn Dodge until it lays down and dies.

If and when I have to buy another truck, it damn sure won't be another damned Ford.

The whole world has witnessed how Bud Light has been completely stripped of the lucrative profits it once enjoyed.

Because serious boycotting works.

And now, even the stupid queers won't drink the crap.

Another example of a product that I won't spend a dime on is Coca-Cola.

Coca-Cola has a long list of products besides it's iconic Coke.

I boycott them all.

You can find a list of these products online.

I could fill a whole page with things I'm on strike against.

I've been boycotting the NFL and all professional sports for many years now and I just added NASCAR to that list.

I boycott damn near everything you find in the grocery stores.

We just refuse to eat processed bullshit.

If everybody would just stop buying crap, then the people who make the crap will get the message.

Become a miser and instead of spending money, collect it and stack it.

You don't need most of that crap anyway, so when you get the urge to throw away your money on bullshit.....think about it and

Just....Don't.... Buy ....It
If we stop buying and we do it as an organized eff... (show quote)

Your body will thank you for not consuming some of the aforementioned junk food but be careful of your mental diet too. Hate and anger are corrosive and debilitating conditions. I generates cortisol, a stress hormone that produces symptoms like weight gain in the face and abdomen, high blood pressure, muscle weakness and high blood pressure. Right now you can witness a textbook case of it on the nightly news.
