What does it take to make people feel secure? And who is responsible for it?

In general what each feels their needs are is more or less up to what most of us can agree on.

It is the Obligation of all of us to help form & protect that more perfect Union.

Even to the point of choosing the right people in government.

If I have earned $1000 for my labor and I pay you $500 for materials to build a chicken coop and Patty $500 to buy the the chickens for the coop, then you pay $250.00 each to two people to paint your house and Patty pays someone $500.00 for chicken eggs and an incubator and all of us exchange money a dozen times down the line but in the end you have made an extra $2000 and ten lines down people have gotten services for the money, then the fact that you end up with $2000 doesn't matter to the rest of us who got goods for services. After all money is just the symbolic way to exchange labor or barter when I don't directly want what you have to sell, but want what someone else who does business with you has to sell. Why should you feel obligated to redistribute the extra $1000 to some one who was never a party to any of the in between transactions? Now if you want to give me some of the extra money, great, I will be thankful, but you don't owe me any of it. That is how the free market works on a simple scale. Left to its own devices without the government stepping in with ten thousand pages of regulations it would work fairly well, and most people would be happy to help their neighbors with our time and money. As soon as the government steps in and takes our money for things we don't want we get resentful. Yes, federal highways, bridges and the military are federal functions as are a number of other things but as the federal government gets more and more over reaching most people become resentful and become less willing to help out other people.

You and I will never see it the same way but at least we are being civil in our discussions, that's great.

I agree that is a fine way to look at the issue.

When most people had a little land an tools to make things The free market worked fine.

But through time people have been displaced & few now have the means to produce any thing. In any humane system effort is made to include these people in the system.

Our nation was founded by those that believe in this.

Sp I ask of you just what is to become of those you would so quickly push a side as being useless in your view?

I think there is a question that is valid but you seem to have already answered in your mind - is there more greed today than in the past? I see no reason to assume that there is and some reason to assume that there isn't.

With the difference in what the richest have & the poorest is as far apart as it ever was.

Plus now most live in urban areas as apposed to living on farms. Being poor but able to grow much of your own food means you may be poorer but you still have the means to produce things.

I have lived with the idea that I would take a little less than I could get for what I do.

But with so much greed in the world I am seeking those that might feel much as I do. I wish to hear from those that believe in leaving something on the table for others. If enough believe as I do it would reinforce my values & would stay on much the same track.

On the other hand if there is little good will left in the world I would have to put aside my values & just be greedier in an effort to keep up.

The word security has more than one meaning. I believe security resides in the mind of the person addressing it. Perfect and absolute security is not possible in this life. Some people think money provides security. It doesn't, unless the only security one is thinking of is buying power. Some people think having a good education is security. Wrong again unless it can be used to one's advantage. Religion makes true believers feel secure for their next life, but not necessarily for this life. I see security as having life and freedom. If either of those things is removed, I have lost my security. Everything else is questionable.

Rights & Privileges. Promised, granted. Sharpen that up a bit. It could mean almost the same thing at some point.

Yes, but what you keep seeming to miss, unless I misunderstand what you say, is that the government expanded power makes it more lucrative to buy influence - the problem of money corrupting the system expands as they reach of government expands.

We are in agreement that money is being used to corrupt government. But I say big or small corruption will still be there. The issue of the size of government is in & of it's self an issue in it's self.

Since I first crossed paths with you I have seen you as a worthy person to exchange ideas with.

There is something in the way we each think that needs to be acted on.

But I truly feel that much good can come from what each of us is trying to say.

Floyd we completely agree with you, but Patty is right too. To take from one person be it at gun point or through the IRS is stealing either way.

I "strongly" advocate volunteerism, my entire life has been dedicated to helping others. I have been attacked on here by those that say charity isn't the answer.

I say those people are misguided, that if you can help just one person you have made a difference.

They also attack the church, pointing fingers at those tv evangelists, well all I can say to that is turn off the tv and go find a small community church and see all of the amazing work they do for others.

Just find what trips your trigger and give them your time.

If all 300,000,000 million plus Americans gave just a couple of hours a week instead of relying on the gov to solve our problems we would have the America we all know can be achieved.

All I know is I could do so much more if the gov didn't just raise my taxes a year ago. I know 2% doesn't sound like much but that equates to thousands of dollars out of my pocket. And now I read more and more companies want to move out of the us because our corp tax rate is out of line in comparison to others like Ireland's.

Whose greed is it our governments 37% tax rate or companies like walgreens who see some European ones as low as 12.5%.

When do we stop relying on gov and start relying on ourselves.
I'm actually getting quite tired of trying to get ... (show quote)

The system we have is more than fair to the few with the most. Those that get the most from the system need to pay the most period.

I don't want to trust on when you may or may not help me. I want a job that pays me enough to be a true part of the system. I wish to be paid fairly for what I do.

If every one is truly a part of the system then every one could pay more in taxes & the burden on each would be less.

We all seek to be secure. But we only become more secure as more of us become secure. If each of us attempts to gain security by having more things it is a false security.

Getting more cancer can never kill the original cancer but only makes it become more invasive.

It needs faith in each other to look out for the best interest of each other. It is only to give each other the chance to have a good life.

Personal greed screws every thing up. When we lack faith in each other & rely one greed to provide the security we seek we only become less secure. For the bottom line is with each of us our security depends on the others security.

When every one has a secure life most of the problems we have will fade away.

For to me only one thing is really clear & that is what ever I feel makes me secure if you are not secure then I am not secure.

For it is only trust in each other that makes life truly worth living.

Being filled with fear is a life to be avoided.

As I interpret your response everything really belongs to all of us and some of us are just borrowing it for a while. The amount is to be determined by a third party for the good of all. if we decide to keep more of what we developed by our labor than the third party wants us to have, then we have to be punished. Now if everything in the world belongs to all the people in the world, than Putin has a right to decide he and his friends want some of our wealth and the third party, perhaps the UN will take it from us and give it to Putin and that is fine, according to your concept. This Country was formed on the notion that all people are created equal & all have the Right to life, liberty & the Pursuit of Happiness.

All have the Obligation to see that all have a reasonable chance at those Rights. It was felt that such a Nation would not perish from this Earth.

So what you see as your Rights with in this nation & you wish to have you Rights preserved Then it is your Obligation to see that my Rights are preserved. & of course it is my Obligation to you also.

Greed just means we have little faith in each other to do what is right in meeting our Obligations to each other.

Why do you choose to ignore the basics of what this country was founded on?

It is living up to meeting the Obligations that come with the Rights people have. The Obligation to preserve the "Right of All to Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness"

It is not about doing any thing for any one. It is that the system needs to see that all have a reasonable chance at getting those things.

If the Private sector fails to do what is needed to create a fair system then the Government needs to step up & do it.

To much wealth in to few hands is the problem. To much greed keeps the system from giving all a fair chance at having those Rights.

What I said was smaller government could be bought with less money. But I see that my view is off because the number of people they have to buy is still the same.

Enough off the 535 in congress & 1 President. Plus who knows how much they need to spend to on others who are running be sure they buy enough people

You hear it all the time about the Rights we have & the Rights we are loosing.

But I hear little about the Obligations of those that have those Rights.

So I ask do the Words "Life, Liberty & The Pursuit of Happiness" only apply to the few?

Is that the basis this Country was founded on?

Or could it have been meant that all should have a chance to enjoy what those words mean.

If that is so, is it not the Obligation of all of Us to see that Dream can be by all?

If I had my way the federal government would stay out of the business of government that constitutionally belongs to the states and local governments and primarily to the people. the federal government should not be involved in school curriculum nor managing the welfare programs or three quarters of the things they are in. Help for the needy should be temporary. Several years ago Chicago, in an effort to clean up the housing projects, told people who lived there that they had to spend five hours a week cleaning up the grounds, picking up trash, washing the urine off the hallway walls inside and a number of other simple projects. The residents picketed screaming and carrying signs that they were owed the apartment because they had earned it just by being alive. then there was that video of the woman with 15 kids from 5 different fathers saying "who is going to take care of my kids, somebody else is responsible for their care" That is what happens when the government steps in and takes on a job they should not do to start with.
I am for encouraging home schooling if the parents are capable, celebrating charter schools and not doing the moronic things they do such as banning the constitution, not permitting children to read the Bible in their free reading time and banning anything but the " progressive" opinions in the schools. Most schools have a Gay Pride Week in high school and often in middle school. However, no information is permitted from EX GAY groups, no handouts about changing same sex preferences or preventing them are ever permitted in schools in most areas. Pressure of this type from special interest groups, the PC crowd and now the Federal government should be stopped. The Constitution does not give the Federal Government the right to do what it is doing. From what I can tell of the BLM grab it is also against the law, but I will with hold my final opinion on that until all the facts come out, if they ever do. Probably they will come out at the same time as Fast and Furious, IRS, collecting data on all the citizens, Obamacare and Benghazi All of those things are not the Federal Government's job to do. Fortunately I don't have my way and the corrupt government gets more corrupt every day.
By the way, where in the Constitution does it say the Federal government is there to help people in their day to day matters? I can't find it, maybe you can. And please don't quote "promote the general welfare" or as one poster keeps claiming "provide welfare" God put us here to help one another as we believe is best, not to just hand over money to the government to do so.

People have the right to a reasonable chance:
"For Life, Liberty & The pursuit Of Happiness."

It is the Governments Obligation to see that this happens.

Now if the private sector lives up to its Obligations. A price they pay for their Rights granted to them there would be little need for the government to do much of any thing to help those being left behind.

Property Rights with out Obligations is the cause of the problems we are having.

Yes we do have Obligations to each other. Those that have more Rights have more Obligations.

When the means of production are in so few hands & so few enjoy the fruits of that production it is wrong.

If there is any taking going on it is only to look at where the wealth ends up.

I am all for educating our children at home. But I believe that we need our children to mix with one another in Public Schools. For no matter what any one may say it is learning how to get along with each other that holds the people together.
