The AR-15 is Perfect for Self-Defense, Here’s Why

One of the most common refrains in the modern debate about gun rights is that semi-automatic rifles, or “assault weapons” as the left likes to call them, are not useful for self-defense.

This is simply wrong. As we know, every rifle is different and while some may not be optimal for close quarters self-defense, others are made precisely for that purpose.

The one rifle that often earns the most vitriol is the much-maligned AR-15.

The modern AR-15 is a beautiful firearm that is as versatile as any other firearm on the market and can be used to train the youngest shooters, or provide hours of fun for the most practiced of shooters.

Recently, in an effort to dispel ignorance on the issue, Tom Knighton of Bearing Arms, put together a short list of reasons to explain why the AR-15 was actually the perfect firearm to use for self-defense.

In a discussion at the American Rifleman, former special ops sergeant major Kyle E. Lamb explains a couple of the reasons that the AR-15 is actually a pretty perfect self-defense firearm.

The AR is very easy to shoot. Head out to the range and test my theory. Ask anyone who wants to join in on the fun to try shooting a scored event, under pressure, with a pistol at home-defense ranges. After you see their performance, try the same with an AR, I will bet money you see much better control of the system. Men and women alike just shoot better with a carbine than with a pistol. As long as the carbine is light enough for the shooter to handle properly, the learning curve will be straight-up…

The AR is unbelievably versatile, from contact shooting distances out to 300 yds., the carbine will outperform the pistol. Most of us don’t think of 300-yd. shooting as a likely home-defense scenario, and, in many areas, it wouldn’t be. But if given an option of defensive tools, and considering our country’s independent heritage and past experiences, why wouldn’t you want extended-range capabilities?

The reality is that the modern AR-15 is the most versatile and easy to shoot rifle on the market, and it’s the perfect firearm for beginners and the not-so-avid shooter.

Here’s a little more evidence for the argument we’re making here, that AR-15’s are completely suitable, and even fitting, for self defense.

Three would-be robbers were shot and killed Monday when an Oklahoma homeowner’s son opened fire on them with an AR-15, authorities said…

Mahoney said the suspects encountered the homeowner’s 19-year-old son, who opened fire after an exchange of words. Two of the suspects died in the home’s kitchen while a third was found in the driveway.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspects were armed, but Mahoney said the preliminary investigation indicated the shootings were in self-defense.
