The AR-15 is Perfect for Self-Defense, Here’s Why

Written by Onan Coca

One of the most common refrains in the modern debate about gun rights is that semi-automatic rifles, or “assault weapons” as the left likes to call them, are not useful for self-defense.

This is simply wrong. As we know, every rifle is different and while some may not be optimal for close quarters self-defense, others are made precisely for that purpose.

The one rifle that often earns the most vitriol is the much-maligned AR-15.

The modern AR-15 is a beautiful firearm that is as versatile as any other firearm on the market and can be used to train the youngest shooters, or provide hours of fun for the most practiced of shooters.

Recently, in an effort to dispel ignorance on the issue, Tom Knighton of Bearing Arms, put together a short list of reasons to explain why the AR-15 was actually the perfect firearm to use for self-defense.
1. It’s Lightweight
2. It’s Compact
3. It Has Low Recoil
4. Versatility
5. Accuracy
6. Ammo Capacity

In a discussion at the American Rifleman, former special ops sergeant major Kyle E. Lamb explains a couple of the reasons that the AR-15 is actually a pretty perfect self-defense firearm.

The AR is very easy to shoot. Head out to the range and test my theory. Ask anyone who wants to join in on the fun to try shooting a scored event, under pressure, with a pistol at home-defense ranges. After you see their performance, try the same with an AR, I will bet money you see much better control of the system. Men and women alike just shoot better with a carbine than with a pistol. As long as the carbine is light enough for the shooter to handle properly, the learning curve will be straight-up…

The AR is unbelievably versatile, from contact shooting distances out to 300 yds., the carbine will outperform the pistol. Most of us don’t think of 300-yd. shooting as a likely home-defense scenario, and, in many areas, it wouldn’t be. But if given an option of defensive tools, and considering our country’s independent heritage and past experiences, why wouldn’t you want extended-range capabilities?

The reality is that the modern AR-15 is the most versatile and easy to shoot rifle on the market, and it’s the perfect firearm for beginners and the not-so-avid shooter.

Do yourself a favor and read more about each of these reasons that every family should own an AR-15 over at Bearing Arms.

Here’s a little more evidence for the argument we’re making here, that AR-15’s are completely suitable, and even fitting, for self defense.

Three would-be robbers were shot and killed Monday when an Oklahoma homeowner’s son opened fire on them with an AR-15, authorities said…

Mahoney said the suspects encountered the homeowner’s 19-year-old son, who opened fire after an exchange of words. Two of the suspects died in the home’s kitchen while a third was found in the driveway.

It was not immediately clear whether the suspects were armed, but Mahoney said the preliminary investigation indicated the shootings were in self-defense.

Well that being said. As has happened a Machete can be a weapon of mass murders. A vehicle can be a weapon of mass murders. Go to Home Depot, make a bomb and that can be a weapon of mass murder. Forks, spoons and knifes are the cause of obesity and as a result are the cause of mass murder. People drive every day, texting. If I had of not waited the other day at a four way. If I had made my turn instead of waiting. An asshole came right through the four way without stopping, he was on his phone texting. I would have been T-boned. Is that a form of mass murder ? My granddaughter was sitting at a red light when she was hit in the rear by someone texting. Totaled her car, still having medical issues. Is that not maybe not mass murder, but assault by a deadly weapon. Where do you want to draw the line ? It's not the implement, it's the person with the implement. I grew up with all kinds of firearms. Had to have them living on a farm. Can never recall any one of our shot-guns or rifles just picking themselves up and shooting a coyote or fox trying to get into the chicken coop. Have you ever shot an AR-15 ? I have, good rifle. Just give me my M16A1 or my M4. Better yet just give me my pump shot-gun. I really like a 22 long. Pick a squirrel out of a nest. Good eating, with gravy and biscuits. Damn good breakfast.

I think a Ruger 10-22 or mini 40 could ...or an old SKS...or a pump shotgun that holds 7 shots (a lot do...magnums too)...or an old M-1 or M-14...or any one of a thousand weapons from old BARs from WWI that still work to French MAS 49-56s yadayadayada...

I like a Glock. What I really liked in the old days in the Army was the 45. Now it's the M9, with the NATO round. Just give me a 45. All of these will serve the purpose of defending our life, and liberty. I grew up before 911, living on a farm with the next neighbor a quarter mile away. If something came down, it was dealt with. The phone was a party line, which means that even if you tried to call for the Police, it would take them at least an hour to get out there. Most time two biddies were on the phone, talking about who so or so wore to church that last Sunday. Point Mike, it is our right to defend ourselves and our family. I have lived through two wars to defend that right. I be DAMED if anyone is going to take that right from me or you and your family.

Unless one lives alone and in a remote location, rifles are horrible self defense weapons. Why?

Rounds easily pass through a human body at close range, putting anyone else in the home at risk. Rounds may pass through exterior walls, putting neighbors at risk.

If you want a fool proof self defense weapon that won't put anyone other than the intruder at risk..............get a ^@#$ shotgun.

Why the AR-15 and high capacity magazines are not neccessary for mass murder.

When Derrick Bird killed 12 people, and wounded 11 more, in Cumbria U.K., he used a registered shotgun, with a 2 shot magazine.

The best defense is a good offense sometimes.

I admit I'm partial to shotguns at close range.

A little wind, a few books of matches, a pleasant drive and any nut could set half of California on fire...burn down a bunch of houses and kill a bunch of people...oh yeah...didn't some illegal alien just do that?
