Would American martial law not be better?

Dude, you guys aren't under martial law. What you have is "Aid to the Civil Power" where the military provides auxiliary enforcement of civil law. That's not the same thing as martial law, where civil law is actually suspended.

So far there's no need for either here but I'm sure the National Guard is on standby should things get unruly and state governors make the call to assist them with enforcement of civil law.

It would take a LOT more than a viral outbreak with a 3% mortality rate to invoke *martial* law in the U.S. Sorry to disappoint the deplorables who I'm sure are fantasizing about it.

To implement martial law in this political climate would be an unmitigated disaster. Has anybody actually considered what nationwide martial law would look like?

I wouldn't trust the current administration with that kind of liability. One reason for saying this is that over the last few years the experts in numerous domains have been flushed out and replaced with loyalists that are far less qualified, rendering the administration as a whole, far less capable. I think the pandemic so far is proving this to be the case.

Fortunately, the local governments and the private sector is handling this admirably and as a result the American people are calm and well-informed, so there's really no call for martial law or even to test the current administration at that level.

How soon do yโ€™all think itโ€™ll happen ? Iโ€™m gonna give it until St Patrickโ€™s day. Theyโ€™ve already canceled the parades. Whatโ€™s your guess??

They cancelled parades because it's generally a good idea to minimize large crowds until we get a better handle of how the virus is spreading and how to control it. It's not just government, the private sector is also responding in a responsible manner. The major sports leagues for instance, shut down their events, losing millions of revenue in the process and it's not because the government told them, it's because it's the responsible thing to do.

Local governments and private businesses appear to be handling things pretty well and despite all this BS about the liberal media scaring everybody that isn't really happening. People are for the most part, calm and well informed. So there really isn't much need for martial law (as much as some people, who are bored with their lives hunger for it)

I *knew* it! I've been saying this all the time... Trump support has nothing to do with his actual qualifications and everything to do with spite. This is why we can't have rational discussions. When one side is driven by hatred and vengeance there's no consideration for facts or context. It's like negotiating with Muslim fanatics.

Most of all, it will be the People's Choice ...

Yeah? That sounds you're saying it will be whether people like it or not, like Kim Jong-un is the "People's Choice" in North Korea. Are you aligned with the growing sentiment among deplorables to replace democracy with tyranny so the rest of us can be forced to comply?

eagleye13 wrote:

PLUS He's not a Lifetime Politician.
He's not a Lawyer

And yet no other president in history has ever been so obsessed with appointing lifelong politicians to the bench, not has any president in history used so many lawyers to push his way through the government. His impeachment trial was the first time America has ever seen their representatives fighting a team of private lawyers for the fate of the nation.

eagleye13 wrote:

He's not doing it for the money.

Oh, c'mon... you can't be THAT stupid Eagle. NONE of the politicians do it for the money... The highest paid politicians (aside from the POTUS) only make $200K which far less than most of them made when they were in the private sector. If anything a government office is a financial sacrifice for the typical politician in Washington. Trump is actually one of the few who DOES do it for the money... He's the first president to retain his business ties while in office and the only president to ever seek profits from government business, which is unconstitutional and therefore under investigation as I write this. American taxpayers spend millions on securing the safety of the First Family, even when his sons, Beavis and Butthead go on private business trips that have nothing to do with government business... But they're part of the First Family so they get security and guess where they all stay? And not at the standard rate either. Trump resorts jack up the price of rooms to $800/night and more when tax-funded security staff check-in.

As an American consumer, I sure hope not. In my industry trading all those highly qualified Indians for less qualified but privileged Americans would result in a loss of quality. American ingenuity has always depended on foreign brains. Maybe if we invest more in education today we can start relying more on American workers in a few decades.

Trump has been succeeding in MAGA.

No one even knows what MAGA means... It's nothing but baseless rhetoric. If anything Trump has made the American economy more susceptible to failure, the American position as a world leader laughable and the security of the American family questionable. But if MAGA is a reference to mindless cheers and pom-poms then sure... Great job Donny.

very well put.

I don't think the facts are in dispute anymore... We all know what happened and you're right it was technically an unconstitutional coup. I think what we are seeing among Republican leaders is combination of defiance among those loyal to Trump (who is essentially a symbolic proxy for Mitch McConnell's Freedom Caucus) and a capitulation among the moderates who I'm sure have been threatened in one way or another. I think what we are seeing among the Republican voters is defiance by Trump supporters and a compromise of better values driven by an unfounded yet overriding fear of the alternative.

Actually, 10 out of 435 would have blown me away. 5 would have also. I found out today that there was more than one, but there was never more than a few(5 or6).

OK... you obviously didn't get it... The Big Switch is not isolated to the House of Representatives. The Big Switch literally involved millions of citizens.

How do you think the southern states all switched from blue to red? The color of a state isn't determined by Congress it's determined by the popular vote. Yes, Congress can sometimes assert *some* influence via gerrymandering and local governments are frequently guilty of voter suppression, but none of that changes the fact that the Big Switch involved millions of people not just 435.

So again, how do you think the southern states all switched from blue to red? How did millions of people suddenly decide it was better to be Republican? Do you really think they all decided not to be racist anymore? Was it those black sitcoms in the 70's? Did they make those Democratic KKK members laugh so hard they decided black people are OK after all and they should start voting Republican?

Seriously, I'm dying to hear your theory on this.

Any idea on who is and why our economy is being tanked?

Yes, because of the global pandemic. I was expecting it to taper off anyway because economic growth cycles rarely exceed 10 years and so far it's been 11. But the virus is shutting down business world-wide and that has a real impact on commerce. It's not rocket science bro.

Back to straightUp your backside.

Well 2008-2011 was on Bush... That's how long it took Obama to fix the Bush disaster. But 2012-2016 was precisely the track that propelled the economy all the way to 2019. Seriously, we can see what's happening here. It takes more than simple ignorance to imagine the economy turned around in 2017 just because Trump waddled in. I mean how stupid do you think we are? We know the Trump narrative is an intentional defiance of the obvious truth.

Just like how the Corona virus is a Chinese hoax. Or how Obama isn't a citizen because in "1961 Hawaii wasn't a state yet". LOL.
