Estimated 200 people die in Twin Towers elevators, 2001

In what is understood to be the worst elevator disaster of all time, an estimated 200 people died in elevators in the World Trade Center buildings on Sept. 11, 2001. Elevators plummeted once the buildings were hit, and balls of fire tore through shafts after the impact. USA Today reported in 2002 that it had identified about 100 people who had escaped from elevators that they pried open or whose doors were just opening as one of the planes hit. The paper said, however, that it could not ID any survivors who were rescued from stuck elevators

In one way, the elevators played a heroic role that morning. They helped thousands evacuate the south tower before the second jet hit. But the elevator shafts also became the circulation system of the disaster, carrying death and destruction throughout the towers.

Elevator shafts worked like chimneys, funneling unbearable smoke to floors above the crashes. The shafts also channeled burning jet fuel throughout both towers. Fire moved not only up and down but also side to side, from shaft to shaft, unleashing explosions in elevator lobbies and in restrooms next to the shafts.

There were many elevators and 3 stairways ... The fire consumed stairway C and most all the elevators... any fire fighter can tell you that fires go out and flair back up unpredictably... if you open the wrong door a room can burst into flames at anytime...

One stairway in the south tower remained open above the crash, but few used it to escape. Stairway A, one of three, was unobstructed from top to bottom. The jet crashed into the 78th through 84th floors of the south tower. A few people escaped from the 78th floor down these stairs. One person went down the stairs from the 81st floor, two from the 84th floor and one from the 91st. Others went up these stairs in search of a helicopter rescue that wasn't possible because of heavy smoke on the rooftop.
