Texas Principal Fired for Demanding Students Speak English at School
If this doesn't show you how cultural Marxism works, then you are not paying attention. Amy Lacey, the principal of Hempstead Middle School in Texas, was placed on administrative leave and eventually fired because she requested that students speak English.
Obviously advocates of the Spanish language insist on Spanish being allowed in public schools. That's going to be an issue when English is the language of the society and so Lacey spoke up requesting that student speak English. This is what led to eventual dismissal and the school district not renewing her contract.
"When you start banning aspects of ethnicity or cultural identity," said Augustin Pinedo, director of the League of United Latin American Citizens Region 18, "it sends the message that the child is not wanted: 'We don't want your color. We don't want your kind.' They then tend to drop out early."
Ms. Lacey had a gag order imposed on her, which seems seriously unconstitutional. However, now that the gag order is no longer in effect, she decided to write a letter to the Houston Chronicle to explain her side of the story.
"I made an announcement over the school's intercom in which I stated that the academic language in Texas is English, and the STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) test and TELPAS (Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System) are in English. I informed students it would be best to speak English in the classrooms to the extent possible, in order to help prepare them for these tests," she wrote.
But it wasn't her own personal rule that she appealed to. No, Lacey appealed to state regulation, which she says is consistent with Section 29.051 of the Texas Education Code:
English is the basic language of this state. Public schools are responsible for providing a full opportunity for all students to become competent in speaking, reading, writing, and comprehending the English language. . . . The mastery of basic English skills is a prerequisite for effective participation in the state's educational program.
She also wrote, "Using English to the extent possible would also allow non-Spanish-speaking teachers a better opportunity to assess understanding and learning. This is in keeping with Title 19, Texas Administrative Code 89.1201(c):
The goal of ESL programs shall be to enable English language learners to become competent in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the English language through the integrated use of second language methods. The ESL program shall emphasize the mastery of English language skills, as well as mathematics, science, and social studies, as integral parts of the academic goals for all students to enable English language learners to participate equitably in school."
She further went on to point out Hempstead's Board policy regarding English and Second Language programs:
An ESL program shall be an intensive program of instruction in English from teachers trained in recognizing and dealing with language differences.
Lacey then said that when she was hired, it was made clear to her that Hempstead Middle School was to be an ESL school. So what did she do wrong? Apparently nothing. She merely followed the rules. It is those with an agenda that are in the wrong here.
Is anyone else smelling criminal activity on the part of the school board? It appears to me that Ms. Lacey may have a lawsuit brewing, as the school board has not only violated their own policy, but state policy as well.
Lacey isn't upset enough it doesn't seem. She writes, "I love this community and will continue to support its efforts to do what is best for all, most importantly our kids. God has given me a new path to walk and I am excited about my new journey. Once again I express great love for all who have supported and respected me during this challenging time and know that we will all move forward."
I wish her well, but I would hope she would seek legal counsel in the matter to hold those accountable who are railroading her for the sake of political pressure.
Texas has been a state where we've seen a lot of disturbing things arise in their education system in the past couple of years, especially with the rise of C-Scope. As I've said before, if you have your children in public, state-run indoctrination centers get out of them now. If you are teaching in one, get out now. Find a private school that has no ties to government money, or seek to homeschool your children. Let's stop feeding the beast that is going to devour us one day.
And one final thing, English speaking parents in that school district, where are you? Why are you not coming to the aid of this principal? Why is your voice not being raised as you are being bullied by those who will not follow the rules?
