this means the atmosphere is moving at 1000+MPH right along with the earth.
Since space is essentially a vacuum, there are no obstacles that would disrupt or otherwise interfere with the atmosphere.

Therefore, the airspeed and ground speed of a jet flying any direction depends on atmospheric conditions - weather, wind direction and speed, humidity, air density, altitude, etc.

The ground speed of a jet flying any direction in calm conditions would match the indicated airspeed.
IOW, at an IAS of 470mph, the ground speed would be 470mph.

With a 20mph head wind, the jet would still indicate an airspeed of 470mph, but the speed across the ground would be 450mph.

Conversely, with a tail wind of 20mph, maintaining 470 indicated airspeed, the ground speed would be 490mph.

Once again oceans, lakes, canals, earth's horizon are all flat. All you need to do is look at what your eyes see.

So I should always believe what I see? Doe that include optical illusions, mirages and a magician sawing a cute blond in half AND putting her back together again, or maybe just levitating her? I have read the Bible, personally I found it of such dubious accuracy as well as so confusing, incoherent and contradictory I could not see it as more than a collection of cultural myths (1), but to each his own.
