So why not let the school just help them with the costs of getting an education, why the big need to restrict the scholarships to "student-athletes"? Since the students are there to receive an education, base the aid on academic, not athletic, ability. If the major pro leagues want the colleges to recruit promising talent, let the leagues foot the bill, the students would then receive an 'education' as compensation for playing.
The only reason the subject is athletes being paid is the fact schools derive money from collegiate athletics. Other scholarship students do not bring revenue in.

I realize it is a very complex ($$$$) topic, since alumni funding and bequests are a big part of it along with TV and conference revenue.
For myself, I find it unacceptable because only a certain segment of the athletes will receive any compensation. Are gymnasts going to receive money? I doubt it. Many cheerleaders are on athletic scholarships. Are they going to be compensated. The “big name” athletes can wait until they become “pros”.
