And finally these.

I see you're from or live in Vista, CA. I lived in San Diego from 1946 through 1955 then Encinitas until 1960. We had a small nursery in Encinitas where we grew hyworthias (sp) a type of succulent. When they multiplied, we boxed them and took them to someone in Vista who potted them and shipped them all over the country. I think we got $.05 each for the plants.

I bought my first rental property in Oceanside in 1985 when my parents moved to Vista for their retirement. I moved here from LA, 20 years ago. I doubt you would recognize anything around here. What used to be single lane highways are now three- and four-lane freeways. Solid wall to wall development from Oceanside to Escondido and from Oceanside to Tijuana. The only open space left along the coast is Camp Pendleton. Too many people, too much traffic.

There are still a lot of nurseries.

The last time I was out there was in 1993. My dad is buried at Fort Rosecrans on Point Loma and we were living in Tucson at the time. Mom was visiting from Indiana so we took her over to visit dad's grave and drive around to some of the places we had lived out there. I had a hard time finding my way around because everything had changed so much. I've used Google Earth to go to different places and see how things have changed since then.

I remember (with profound fondness) about all the above, and I'm grateful to have grown up back then.
