Or do you consider a dislike of Trump to be "decidedly diametrically opposed to our founding principles"?
You've been a member here 6 months, Canuck, that's cool, man. Slatten and I joined 6 years ago, within 2 months of each other. Six years is enough time to get a real feel for where other members really stand, long enough to develop a history, a track record. Slat and I (among others) are veterans in every sense of the word. He has seen combat as a Marine, I've seen combat as a firefighter (20 years of it). Not to compare the nature of the two, but danger is danger no matter how it manifests. Slat and I are veteran OPP members. A good indicator is the length of time we have been here and the number of posts we have made. At 45,000 + posts, Slatten may hold the OPP record.

I am not accusing Slatten of anything, I am simply curious why a Marine of his stature would favor the philosophies of a political party that has proven ever to be a threat to our Constitutional republic.

Thanks for both your posts in my defense, CD.

But, as Blade so aptly described our common time on OPP, we have become fairly familiar with one another. Though not in perfect alignment with any particular poster (who is?), I find Blade to be well-informed, articulate and as worthy a contributor as anyone on the forum. We obviously have differences, but I respect his opinions while accepting that he often thinks about as well of mine as I do of his, whether that be good, bad or indifferent.

OPP basically being a forum for politically-related topics, conflicting opinions are to be expected. Thus, I accept that many may view the world of politics through different lenses than I do. I like to think that, in our exchanges, Blade & I have been mutually courteous, civil and respectful. That is something to be appreciated with regards to any interaction.

This is a good time to offer, once again, one of my favorite Mark Twain quotes for all, "The rule is perfect: In matters of opinion, our adversaries are insane."

If you check the time line from Wolf's post to my "retort," you'll notice it only took about twenty minutes. I could'a been quicker if I hadn't taken time to check out other threads and posts. I also took the time to respond to Squiddiddler's post prior to Wolf's.

Let's try what was actually in the Report: Barr: "After carefully reviewing the factual legal theories outlined in the report, and in consultation with the Office of Legal Counsel, the Deputy Attorney General and I concluded that the evidence developed by the special counsel is not sufficient to establish that the president violated an obstruction of justice offense"..[sounds a little different when it is copied accurately from the original Black & White documents] ~~

Unlike an accident that 5 people were eyewitnesses... (show quote)

I can't say the following is applicable in the case of the Mueller Investigation, but it may well be...

The legal concept of 'Plausible Deniability':

'Plausible deniability is the ability of people (typically senior officials in a formal or informal chain of command) to deny knowledge of or responsibility for any damnable actions committed by others in an organizational hierarchy because of a lack of evidence that can confirm their participation, even if they were personally involved in or at least willfully ignorant of the actions. In the case that illegal or otherwise disreputable and unpopular activities become public, high-ranking officials may deny any awareness of such acts to insulate themselves and shift blame onto the agents who carried out the acts, as they are confident that their doubters will be unable to prove otherwise. The lack of evidence to the contrary ostensibly makes the denial plausible, that is, credible, although sometimes it merely makes it unactionable. The term typically implies forethought, such as intentionally setting up the conditions to plausibly avoid responsibility for one's (future) actions or knowledge. In some organizations, legal doctrines such as command responsibility exist to hold major parties responsible for the actions of subordinates involved in heinous acts and nullify any legal protection that their denial of involvement would carry.'

Two days before the 50th anniversary of Robert Mueller being seriously wounded while leading his platoon against a numerically superior enemy in Vietnam, his latest service to the nation was released in the form of the Special Counsel’s Report.

In a morning press conference before the release, Attorney General William Barr seemed to give a friend of three decades his due after two years of lies and slander by our president.

“I would also like to thank Special Counsel Mueller for his service and the thoroughness of his investigation, particularly his work exposing the nature of Russia’s attempts to interfere in our electoral process,” Barr said.

A few breaths later, Barr committed one of the great public betrayals of our history. The country’s most senior law enforcement officer actually sought to justify President Trump’s mendacious attacks against Mueller and the investigation he had been appointed to conduct.

“As the special counsel’s report acknowledges, there is substantial evidence to show that the president was frustrated and angered by a sincere belief that the investigation was undermining his presidency, propelled by his political opponents, and fueled by illegal leaks,” Barr said.

In fact, the report acknowledges no such thing.

What the report does demonstrate is that Mueller conducted an exceedingly fair, determinedly thorough investigation.

Just as he had on the battlefield a half century ago, Mueller performed brilliantly.

His one mistake was to trust his supposed friend Barr.

To call Barr a human hedgehog would be unfair if the resemblance were confined to his appearance. But he also shares a hedgehog’s unique “self-anointing,” a behavior that involves licking an object whose smell the creature finds attractive until it works up a froth that it then rubs on itself.

Barr must have worked up considerable froth in the presence of the president. He smelled like pure Trump on March 24, when he offered a four-page document that was was supposed to be an honest appraisal of the evidence Mueller so carefully gathered under such trying circumstances.

Barr reeked of The Donald when he subsequently spoke of the FBI “spying” on the Trump campaign.
During his public betrayal of Mueller at Thursday’s press conference, Barr twice said there was “no collusion.” He implicitly excused even Trump’s demonstrable lies concerning an effort to fire Mueller because of fictitious “conflicts.”

As he exonerated Trump, Barr failed to note that page two of Volume II of the very document he was releasing states, “While this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.”

The report further states, “If we had confidence after a thorough investigation of the facts that the president clearly did not commit obstruction of justice, we would so state.”

Mueller apparently did not foresee that Barr would effectively see Trump exonerated anyway. Mueller also did not likely anticipate that when releasing the report, Barr would say Trump’s behavior must be put “in context” and accepted.

The report documents that Trump lied, lied, and lied again—and pressured his subordinates to do the same.

The true source of the frustration and anger that Barr describes was partly the refusal of several staffers to be as unprincipled as their president.

The most prominent of those who stood up to the president was White House Counsel Don McGahn, nephew of the late Atlantic City lawyer/fixer Paddy McGahn. The uncle cleared the way for Trump’s casinos and the nephew might therefore have been expected to be situationally flexible. But the uncle was also a thrice-wounded Marine and recipient of the Navy Cross. The report describes the nephew as responding more like a Marine than a fixer/lawyer.

The big test for Don McGahn came after Trump instructed him to have Mueller fired for supposed “conflicts,” in June 2017. Mueller would subsequently find himself in the bizarre position of investigating an attempt to stop him from investigating.

“The president cited as conflicts that Mueller had interviewed for the FBI Director position shortly before being appointed as special counsel, that he had worked for a law firm that represented people affiliated with the president, and that Mueller had disputed certain fees relating to his membership in a Trump golf course in Northern Virginia,” the report notes.

The report adds that Steve Bannon told Trump the purported conflicts were “ridiculous.” Mueller had never been interviewed for the FBI Director. He had not represented any Trump people, even if others at his very large law firm had.

As for the supposed golf course fee dispute, the report says: “In October 2011, Mueller resigned his family’s membership from Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia, in a letter that noted that, ‘We live in the District and find that we are unable to make full use of the Club,’ and that inquired ‘whether we would be entitled to a refund of a portion of our initial membership fee,’ which was paid in 1994.”

The report adds, “About two weeks later , the controller of the club responded that the Muellers’ resignation would be effective Oct. 31, 2011, and that they would be ‘placed on a waitlist to be refunded on a first resigned / first refunded basis...’ The Muellers have not had further contact with the club.”

McGahn said he would quit rather than fire Mueller on fictitious grounds, and went so far as to pack up his office. Trump relented, and that might have been that, had the “fake news” not reported the truth.

“In early 2018, the press reported that the president had directed McGahn to have the special counsel removed in June 2017 and that McGahn had threatened to resign rather than carry out the order,” the report says. “The president reacted to the news stories by directing White House officials to tell McGahn to dispute the story and create a record stating he had not been ordered to have the special counsel removed. McGahn told those officials that the media reports were accurate in stating that the president had directed McGahn to have the special counsel removed. The president then met with McGahn in the Oval Office and again pressured him to deny the reports.”

The report continues, “The president asked McGahn whether he would ‘do a correction,’ and McGahn said no.

“The president also asked McGahn in the meeting why he had told Special Counsel’s Office investigators that the president had told him to have the special counsel removed. McGahn responded that he had to, and that his conversations with the president were not protected by attorney-client privilege.”

Trump inquired about McGahn’s habit of jotting down what was said during meetings with him. The report says, “The president then asked, ‘What about these notes? Why do you take notes? Lawyers don't take notes. I never had a lawyer who took notes.’ McGahn responded that he keeps notes because he is a ‘real lawyer’ and explained that notes create a record and are not a bad thing. The president said, ‘I’ve had a lot of great lawyers, like Roy Cohn. He did not take notes.’ ”

Anybody who was around Roy Cohn knew that he did not want to be hampered by a record and that he always sought to make the truth whatever best suited him at the moment. And Cohn was not just Trump’s lawyer; he was young Donald’s mentor.

To read the litany of Trump’s lies as detailed in the Mueller report is to feel that Cohn’s spirit has risen from the crypt in Queens that he shares with his mother. Trump also lies about the successful firing of FBI Director James Comey.

Then there are the lies about the Mueller investigation itself. The report describes a moment on the south lawn last August: “In an impromptu exchange with reporters that lasted approximately five minutes, the president twice called the special counsel’s investigation a ‘rigged witch hunt.’ ”

So said the president who sought to rig the firing of a resolutely honest prosecutor.

At another moment, the report says, “The president described the special counsel’s investigation as ‘a witch hunt that ends in disgrace.’ ”

The actual disgrace belongs to Trump and to Barr.

In assuming the scent of the president, the human hedgehog seems to have also assumed the scent of Trump’s mentor. Cohn spoke endlessly about loyalty, but was always ready to betray a friend.
In Barr’s case, that is Mueller, whose only big mistake in the investigation was trusting him.

It’s nearly 50 years since Mueller led his platoon from potential disaster, despite a bullet wound to the thigh. This is one of the qualities that has long made America great. Barr, and Trump, and his truth-indifferent supporters, all owe Mueller an apology.

Apparently if you are Marine, active or not, you belong to some sort of Ubermensch brotherhood, untouchable and above reproach. If you are a war hero, you are an Immortal on a pedestal. John McCain comes to mind.

But putting aside Robert Mueller's heroism in Vietnam, he has a shady record in his years as US Attorney and FBI director--the details of his past malfeasance stretch over the whole of his career in the DOJ. But we cannot under any circumstance consider that, it simply has no bearing on this issue. What is important, even critical, is to dig up all the dirt that can be found on President Trump, past or present. The shit dumped on him dates back 20 or 30 years. The shit Mueller dumped on American citizens extends back over 30 years.

Mueller's past record while serving in federal office is irrelevant, while Trump's entire life is on the chopping block.

Also irrelevant is the incestuous affair among the major players in launching the special counsel investigation. The principal ones are Comey, Rosenstein and Mueller, they are long time buds, worked together off and on in the DOJ.

Under director Comey, the FBI investigated the Hillary email scandal. Then Comey went public and exonerated her. (Irrelevant is the fact that Obama made the decision that Hillary be exonerated and so Comey drafted her exoneration months before the FBI interviewed her and the investigation was complete.) He assumed authority he did not have and acted as judge and jury. He redefined legal terms, gross negligence became no intent of wrongdoing.

With Hillary off the hook, she and the DNC colluded with Comey and his inner circle of political hacks. Through a couple of middle men, the Clinton campaign and the DNC commissioned the commercial research and strategic intelligence firm Fusion GPS and the law firm Perkins Coie to engage the services of a former foreign intelligence service agent to seek evidence of Trump malfeasance and sordid activities in Moscow. The Hillary campaign and the DNC paid this agent $130,000 for his work. Working with his Russian contacts, the agent produced what is now infamously known as the Steele Dossier.

With his signature on a FISA warrant application, Comey used the Steele dossier as the primary evidentiary instrument to obtain the warrant. Comey later admitted that the info in the dossier was "unverified". IOW, he submitted questionable evidence to the FISA court. This of course falls under the legal headings of "FISA abuse" and "lying to the court." The FISA warrant was renewed 3 times, Deputy AG Rosenstein signed the first renewal.

10 Key Takeaways From The Released FISA Warrants Against Carter Page

After the FISA court issued the warrant to the FBI, Dpty AG Rosenstein sent a memo to President Trump recommending director Comey's dismissal. President Trump accepted the recommendation and fired him. Comey took a hit for the team. This was the setup.

Rosenstein, as acting AG, then appointed his old pal Mueller as special counsel. An AG, or acting AG, cannot appoint a Principal Officer to federal service. Mueller, as special counsel, was an inferior officer with limited authority, his original mandate was to conduct a counterintelligence investigation, not a criminal one. Rosenstein's duty in this was to supervise the special counsel investigation. This he did not do, rather he handed Mueller Carte Blanche and a blank check, then pretty much stayed in the background or washed his hands of the affair.

Mueller drew his team of investigators from a pool of liberal, pro-Hillary attorneys, his principal hit man was Weissman, a seriously hard core leftist who hated Trump with a passion. And, almost immediately the investigation morphed into a criminal one. Mueller's team went after any and everyone who had ever had any dealings with Donald Trump, even indicting Russian entities.

Other members in this incestuous affair were Dpty FBI director Andrew McCabe, Peter Strozk and Lisa Page, Bruce and Nellie Ohr (dear old Nellie worked for Fusion GPS).

Books have been written and are already on the shelves detailing the greatest political scandal in American history.

Blade, it continues to bother me that so few people manage to say anything about Hillary being interviewed without being under oath. She was interviewed by FBI agents none of whom I know the names. The fact that her being free to say anything because of the lack of oath allowed her to say anything, which she did so well, in her self-defense, allowed them to report anything, which they did, still bothers me a lot.

"oldroy" not intending to interfere with your comment that was directed at someone else but I argree that Mueller did pretty much skip right over Hillary ~ [to be continued in another separate ongoing investigation] ~ Mueller wrote several pages describing the Trump Tower meeting [to leave some innuendos for the Dems & Media hacks] but he left out a few very critical issues of this meeting. Mueller failed to even mention the Russian lawyer [not a Russian agent as the fake news claims] Natalia Veselnitskaya & lobbyist Rinat Akhmetshin ~ Failed to mention any "connections" she had in working for Fusion GPS [fake Russian Dossier "salesman"]

While last but not least, Mueller also skipped over the fact that this Russian lawyer had been deported and that Obama & Atty Gen Lynch created a "special visa" for her to return to the US ~ However, we have even heard Obama say that he didn't know anything about any of this until someone mentioned it to him much later?? Right??
