If a Senator happens to die while in office, what is the succession procedure?
If a vacancy occurs due to death, resignation, or expulsion the amendment allows the state legislature to empower the governor to appoint a replacement. That replacement would hold the seat until the end of the senator's current term or until a special election could be held.
The only exception is Arizona. The Grand Canyon State requires a special election for all vacancies and does not allow any temporary replacements.
Want to know why McCain isn't resigning when he should be? Voting people need to know this.

The people of Arizona elected McCain and deserve to have him serve the remainder of his term as he sees fit. The thing to watch is the seat up for grabs in November and right now things are looking pretty promising.

McCain's seat is not up for grabs in November. The deadline for him to step down and open his seat for November elections passed on May 31. Had McCain decided to step down, it could have created chaos with both Senate seats coming up for election at the same time. Now it's guaranteed Arizona will have at least one Republican senator beyond this fall. His term is not over until 2022. He may not make it until then, in which case, the Republican Governor will appoint another Republican if McCain dies.
Some have said they could appoint his wife to take his seat.

He’s a phony and has always been. Enough said. He’s been living a lie that’s an nsult to every man who ever spent time at the Hanoi Hilton.
