Well I certainly got a wakeup call since I married Irina in Moscow in 1987, prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union. She is very emphatic about distinguishing between Russia and the USSR, which are not interchangeable terms despite what most Americans think. The majority of American agree with you that the U.S. is on the wrong track.

Robin Hood is not a pure analogy of the economic theory of socialism but it works for many. The US was never in a feudalist economic system. Russia went from feudalism to communism blaming capitalism. I guess this is where the Robin Hood lore has it's attraction to Russians.
The US went from a free-market economic system to capitalism with anti-trust laws. Ever since then, free-market proponents criticize the US system as socialism. Socialism has private ownership prohibited. Money can only be used for consumption and not for investment or property like in a capitalist system.
Some republicans still believe the free-market economic system is better than capitalism due to government regulations slowing economic growth.
