Thanks to my friend Chaplain John for this one. A lot of facts I didn't know!! ..... Dog.

Facts about Patrick
http://christiananswers.net/q-eden/patrick.html

Although lovely, the stained glass rendering (above) is surely not a reliable likeness of Patrick, nor would he have clothed himself in such regalia. He was a man of sincere HUMILITY and acknowledged that he was a repentant SINNER, and lived as a willing SLAVE of Christ.

NOT IRISH—He was an British Celt who later became a missionary-evangelist to Ireland. Patrick was born to a family in ROMAN BRITAIN sometime in 373 A.D.[2]. Being dominated by the Roman Empire, he became conversant in Latin.

AN ATHEIST IN A CHRISTIAN FAMILY—Patrick descended from a Christian family that had been, for at least two generations, in Christ Jesus. His father, he tells us was “the deacon Calpurnius, son of the late Potitus, a presbyter, of the settlement of Bannaven Taburniae.” [1] However, as a rebellious youth, Patrick had no interest in Christ, living instead for fun, adventure and pleasure. Then, God forcefully humbled teenaged Patrick, and turned his life upside down—taking away his pleasures, freedom, family, homeland, food, warm clothing, and more.

NOT CATHOLIC—Patrick had virtually nothing to do with the Roman Catholic Church during his lifetime. His writings make no mention of such key Catholic Church’s beliefs as adoration of the Virgin Mary, prayer to the Saints, the Pope or his supposed infallibility, Purgatory, The Mass or Catholic sacraments and rituals. Neither did he teach celibacy; in his time, church leaders were allowed to marry. His converts resisted the Roman Catholic Church’s advances seeking to bring its beliefs and authority over Ireland’s believers.

NOT A “SAINT”—Patrick has never been a Saint in the Roman Catholic sense—never canonized by a Pope. However, he is most certainly a saint in the Biblical sense—a fully repentant sinner, spiritually born-again, a true believer, a humble and faithful follower of Christ—now enjoying eternal life with God.

MARCH 17?—Neither Patrick’s date of birth or death are known with any certainty. Tradition says that March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day) is one of those dates, but there is no documentation to prove it.

NO SNAKES CHASED from Ireland—The myth of Patrick banishing literal snakes from Ireland came after his death. Far more important and real, however, is the fact that Patrick, through God’s power, delivered the nation from that Old Serpent (the Devil and his demons) who so dominated the hearts and minds of the people.

COURAGE, BORN FROM ABSOLUTE TRUST IN GOD—Living in almost constant danger of assassination, Patrick fearlessly brought the true Gospel of Christ to the Irish—to the most powerful and brutal Druid chieftains, to commoners and slaves, alike—as a Christian missionary-evangelist.

Interesting Dog. Soooooo......how did St. Patricks day morph into a day for everybody to get hammered on green beer, and puke?
Maybe an Irish thing? I understand they like their beer, and all.
My wife is 1/2 Irish 1/2 German so I understand. She'll go ahead, and have a beer with you!

Well Archie I'm Irish and Indian (the American kind) and the Irish will make anything into a drinking day, hell I had a great movement today so I can bet smashed this evening type thing. Now the Indian side of me says don't be a damn fool so I just stopped drinking green beer all together and feel much better for it.

I am from the Scottish/Celtic variety with other stuff in between. A mutt, if you will. I avoid the green beer myself. It looks unnatural.

The older you get, the longer it takes to grow back your toenails after puking them up.

Well to be completely honest Arch I don't partake in the spirit brew any longer. I quit drinking alcoholic beverages many years ago cause I never had a problem starting to drink, hell I joined the service and never even had a hangover for 20+ years mostly cause I never got straight. Got a DUI 31+ years ago and the PD Reservation Officer I worked for said verboten on it so I quit drinking completely, water, coffee and herbal tea is my forte now.

I do enjoy my beer, but in moderation. Our way of making a living demands a clean drivers license.
I am really worried about a friend of mine from elementary school now though. He had a hard time getting started in life because of his drinking. Finally got going good till one day a lady at a scale house smelled alcohol on him. His boss was compassionate, and allowed him to resign instead of reporting to the DOT causing him to lose his license.
He was sober for 6 years. Did well, made good money driving oversize load stuff.
He now lives in the DFW area, still pulling big loads.
I talked to him the other night, and he was drunk.
I worry about the guy.

I have a brother in law similar, likes his toddy's a lot but he doesn't have a drinking problem, hell just ask him. He recently lost his wife from a lifetime of over use with wine (horrible way to go, her body functions just shut down one at a time) but then wine is a healthy drink being made from grapes and all so no problem there either. I guess having been there gives me a different view of the problem, outside looking in can give a clearer perspective than being in the middle of the soup bowl back strocking. I wish your friend all the luck and help he can use Arch.

Some of my relatives are Irish and they visit Ireland frequently, they are always amazed at the hoopla associated with St. Patrick's day because it is small potatoes in Ireland. It is seemingly, more American than Irish -- any excuse for a great party.

Anyone who has lived with the devastation, to families, caused by a drunk has little sympathy or tolerance for those who lack the sense to control their appetites.

They do not need sympathy nor tolerance they need assistance and caring people who understand and are willing to assist positively in anyway possible. Alcoholism is not a disease like being a liberal is, alcohol can be considered an escape from something hard to live with that varies by each person but I guess one could say the same thing of a liberal. But then this is just my thoughts and not worth much sand. Oh and I am not calling you a liberal here either.
