Only the strict, unchanging law of the prophet can redeem this uncivilized condition. Nearly a millennium of history became, to the radicalized Qutb, an offense wrought by the violence of jahili “Crusaders” and the supposed perfidy of the Jews. And Muslim leaders allied with the West were no better than the Crusaders themselves. Therefore, Qutb called all true Muslims to jihad, or Holy War, against jahiliyya—which is to say, against modernity, which America so powerfully represents.

This philosophy led to Qutb’s execution in 1966. Proud to the end, he refused to accept the secular Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser’s offer of mercy in exchange for Qutb’s repudiation of his jihad. Nasser may have silenced a critic, but the martyrdom of Sayyid Qutb accelerated his movement. The same year the philosopher was hanged, according to journalist Lawrence Wright, the teenage al-Zawahiri formed his first violent cell, dedicated to the overthrow of the Egyptian government and the creation of an Islamist state. Meanwhile, Qutb’s brother Muhammad went into exile in Saudi Arabia, where he taught at King Abdul Aziz University. One of his students, an heir to the country’s largest construction fortune, was Osama bin Laden.


Osama bin Laden found Qutb's writings (The America I Knew, Milestones, and In the Shadow of the Qu'ran) highly inspirational. Along with US support of Israel and the presence of US forces remaining in Saudi Arabia following the first Gulf War, Qutb's radical philosophy played a significant role in radicalizing bin Laden and motivated him to fight with the Mujaheddin in A-stan against the Soviets, and later in his founding of Al Qaeda. Mohammed Atta also was inspired by Qutb's writings, and his martyrdom.

Fire Engineering: "FIREPROOFING" AT THE WTC TOWERS

I investigated the fireproofing in both World Trade Center towers over approximately a 10-year period between the early 1990s and early June 2000, the last time I was in the towers.

There were problems with the fireproofing in the World Trade Towers that may have rendered them vulnerable to fire. These problems are not unique to the WTC; I have observed similar problems with the fireproofing in many high-rise buildings in the United States and Europe.

The WTC towers were built at the time of transition from asbestos-containing fireproofing to nonasbestos formulations. The nonasbestos fireproofing protecting some of the floors, including the floors impacted by the airplanes, was in some ways inferior to asbestos-containing fireproofing. The nonasbestos materials are less dense, less uniform, and less cohesive to the surface. Nonasbestos fireproofing materials were rushed into use, in some instances without the benefit of full-scale fire tests. To make matters worse, there were no field tests to determine if fireproofing materials were properly installed until 1977, when the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) published tests for adhesion, cohesion, thickness, and density of applied fireproofing. If these tests had existed in the early 1970s, when the towers were built, then the deficiencies outlined below could have been discovered and corrected.

I inspected core columns up to the 78th floor but was unable to access them above that point. These inspections revealed that the bond of fireproofing on core columns had failed in many locations and the fireproofing was falling off the columns in floor-high sheets. Photo 3, taken in 1994, shows a core column from which the fireproofing had fallen off in a sheet that is several stories high. The red circle and date was the Port Authority's response to the missing fireproofing. This resulted because the steel had not been properly prepared at the time of the initial spray application. Rust scale had not been removed prior to applying the fireproofing. The fireproofing had adhered well to the rust scale, but the rust was coming loose from the steel (photo 4). You are a big fan of photographs, payne, go to the website and have a look.

Examining the rust, I discovered that cement paste from the fireproofing had run behind flakes of the rust, indicating that the rust existed at the time the fireproofing was applied. The result was that the fireproofing adhered loosely to the columns and would fall off in large sheets. This defect was never corrected and still existed in June 2000 and probably at the time of the plane crashes. It is possible the fireproofing was missing from sections of columns on the impact floors or that some or all of the loosely adhered fireproofing fell off with the force of the impacts. This is a defect that would have been easily discovered by the ASTM adhesion and cohesion quality assurance test, had this standard existed at the time of construction.

In addition, there were a number of areas in the elevator shafts where fireproofing on core beams had been knocked off by elevator cables or had been damaged by foot traffic during installation of the elevator equipment (photo 5).

Fireproofing on joist-to-wall connections was also deficient. The long-span joists were supported by an angle seat welded to the face of the exterior columns. The fireproofing applied in some places was so thin that the angle seat, the shape of the bolts connecting the joist to the seat, and the bolts holding together the spandrel panels could be readily discerned. According to building drawings, these areas should have had a fire rating of four hours. For such a rating, properly applied fireproofing should be at least one to 11/2 inches thick. At this thickness, the bolts and even the angle seat itself would not be discernable (photo 6).

There were a number of locations in the WTC towers where the work of other trades obstructed the installation of the fireproofing. This is a common problem in high-rise construction in which ductwork, conduits, and piping are installed before the fireproofing. Building codes should be strengthened, requiring that fireproofing be installed prior to the work of other trades. This is the only way that a continuous and uniform layer of fireproofing can be applied.

The videos sounded more like rain then explosives ... Your loader is as clueless as you are... the towers did not implode... they peeled outward... the truth is boring but science fiction sells big time... explain to us viewers what a 1400 foot building sounds like in collapse... if it was a controlled demo we should clearly hear tons of high explosive detonating 100 times in ten seconds... it never happened putz...

That video does nothing of the sort. Bunch of morons once again making outrageous assumptions. The stats may be correct, but the speculations are total bullshit.

First of all, 157 people were aboard the two jets that struck the towers and a never to be known number of people in the towers were directly in the path of those jets. Due to the tremendous violence of those crashes and the explosion of jet fuel throughout the impact zones, there is little doubt that these people were obliterated and incinerated. Moreover, because the impacts and fuel explosions were horizontal through the buildings, bits of flesh, bone fragments and teeth were blown for blocks. This was particularly evident in the strike on the South Tower.

The idiot who narrated a portion of that video said, "when a building collapses the victims tend to be TRAPPED between the pancaking floors, they may be mangled, but in most cases, they remain in ONE PIECE." Oh, really? The extreme violence of several hundred thousand tons of disintegrating building and office contents collapsing from a thousand feet up would simply trap a victim "between the pancaking floors". That moron needs to get the hell away from his video games, get out of his mom's basement and spend some time in the real world.

Let's get real. The inside of those towers was like a giant blender running at full speed. Thousands, if not millions, of broken steel beams, rods, tubes, torn steel sheeting, slabs and chunks of cement, severed lengths of heavy wires and cables, shards of glass, plastic, and ceramic, shattered wood, drywall, particle board and marble, machines of all kinds, desks, cabinets, etc etc etc all churning in a huge grinding, crushing, slicing mass would shred human bodies, tear them to pieces, slice them up, pulverize them, grind them to hamburger.

More than 90% of the workers and visitors who died in the towers had been at or above the points of impact (1356 people were trapped above the impact zone in the North Tower and 618 above the impact zone in the South Tower did not get out). These people, nearly a quarter of a mile up, were in the blender the longest.

Somebody needs to beat the shit out of Richard Gage.

Oh yeah, in 2011, a four foot by 17 inch piece of aircraft landing gear was found wedged between two buildings a block and a half north of the WTC site. It was stamped with Boeing ID and serial number. It was from the 767 that struck the South Tower--Flight 175.
