Ah-Ha! Now you run into the old canard about votes being anonymous. If the voter is forced to provide identification, then the vote is no longer anonymous. If the vote is no longer anonymous, then the system is opened up to voter intimidation and some people may not vote because they are afraid that someone else will know what their vote was and hold it against them.
If you think
that's ridiculous:
Also, you're trying to prevent 'minorities' from voting because everybody knows that 'minorities' have no identification and cannot afford to get any. So now you're not only trying to undermine the anonymity of the electoral system but you're a racist too!
And if
that's not bad enough:
Also, by marking a voter with some form of indelible ink or stamp, you are singling out the person as having voted and as such they may be subjected to threats and intimidation if they will not reveal whom they voted for.
Those are all arguments that have been used in a court of law to oppose voter identification. Now, the real reason voter ID is so strongly opposed:
1/ Vote early, and vote often. Without voter ID or some marking to identify someone who already voted, no-one knows how often a given voter actually voted. They go to the polls, vote, go home, change clothes, go to the polls, vote, rinse, repeat..... If you don't stand out, poll workers are not likely to remember you and so you can vote for your favorite candidates as often as you like.
2/ Voter registration. We've all seen the videos where the activist is asking people who they would vote for and then signing them up as voters when they give the 'right answer'.
