I'm encouraged by the phrase "former liberal."
For example, when I was a police officer assigned to the most crime ridden section of a major city (for eleven of my twenty six years on the force)
I could apply the "former liberal" phrase to all but two persons assigned to my squad. Those two remained true to their ideals despite an avalanche
of evidence pointing out what liberal government polices have done to the Black family structure.
It was so bad that many (not all) Black officers were troubled what they saw. I often heard them talking among themselves about the "ignorant ass"
crimes they were forced to write reports about each day.
My own impression was that there were many many decent people (both Black and White) living in that section of town who felt trapped. They have
collectively given up hope that the torrent of crime they live with will ever do anything but stop getting worse. I saw Trump reaching out to these good people
during his campaign. He understands. He was trying to give them hope. I believe him.
