Sorry if you don't fall into the category of most on the left. Most will rely on "racist" if nothing else works. Most people agree that trucks which are loaded with signs on them, there is a purpose for their use. When the words on those signs are "martial law", one can be forgiven if he thinks we will be under martial law in that the FEMA camps have been spruced up and readied for occupancy, so much ammo has been bought up by the federal government that they could arm several countries - unprecedented amounts - NOT for the military. The military command is being gutted. Our President doesn't care what people think about his actions and policies, and he doesn't mind causing pain for his citizens. Additionally, he has destroyed 1)our perfectly good healthcare system, 2)our economy, 3)our racial harmony, 4)parts of our religions, and 5)as many of our God given rights as he can with Congress still around.

Given all of that, why do you view martial law as a "paranoid fantasy" rather than common sense telling the citizens to get ready for famine and pain? I certainly expect martial law because all the warning signs are here today.

With all due respect, I highly doubt the government would bother printing up "martial law" signs. A few thousand troops, a tank or two and plenty of bull horns screaming "Get the hell off the streets", would be far more effective.

Your five point list is also fascinating. From what I see, our healthcare system remains intact with half already on single payer. The economy is trudging along at a slow pace. Racial harmony is as poor as ever. All of my Episcopal beliefs stand, with separation of church and state intact. And my rights are the same as they were a decade ago. The only thing different is Patriot Act over reach. And frankly I could care less. I have nothing to hid. Snoop away.

The UN (and before that, The League of Nations) was the invention of America modeled on our Articles of Confederation and Federal Constitution. In China recently there were calls for deAmericanizing...direct reference to how our currency is the world's currency...but indirectly it was a degree of resentment how Americanized everyday culture in China and everywhere the world has become. Well, sometimes we complain how much our everyday products are "made in China" (they're quite successfully capitalist now)...and back when the complaint was that everything was made in Japan. Believe me, the complaint there is "made in the U.S.A." Yes, we still buy and they still buy. It's a world economy.

Do you recall Putin's complaint about "American exceptionalism" and the President's reply defending our special role in world affairs? Putin's complaint amounted to
criticizing our deciding on our own what should be done about Syria and earlier about Saddam Hussain in Iraq, etc. He wants those decisions made through the UN where Russia can veto actions it considers interference in other nations' internal affairs...kind of like libertarians' arguments about undue Federal interference in states' affairs. Ironic state of affairs! ha. Well, in the end we do have a special role in world affairs as the protagonist of our model of government and ideals for world civilization. All nations aspire in that direction, even those who are hostile, just that it's a long road ahead for some nations to get around built-in obstacles from their pasts.

We too little appreciate our place in history or the place the Brits had. Bush had the vision that we could establish a republic in Iraq equivalent to the one we created in South Korea that would lead the way in the Middle East's transition from feudalism to the modern world. It didn't quite work out that way (or at least not yet) and was perhaps too forward (personally I thought it the right geopolitical move, but that's only my opinion). We do not always win each battle and make mistakes but we move on and, as in the Cold War, eventually win the day for world civilization...just as the Brits did in preceding centuries. (Colonialism was not exactly "politically correct" but India, South Africa, Nigeria, Singapore, and Hong Kong owe the Brits for their emergence from their dark middle ages to their model governments and economic & social model roles in Africa and Asia--if only the French had done so well with their colonial operations...hopefully I can say that without offense to the French since I'm part French ancestry myself). Don't forget, we & the Brits are the present-day Rome and Athens in mankind's advance in civilization.

I realized the GOP had become Jacksonian after Reagan's first term and became a Democrat after being a Republican for 40 years. Tea Party "populism" dramatizes the parallel to the Jacksonian populists.
