Benjamin Carson Biography

Pediatric Neurosurgeon
Benjamin Carson Date of birth: September 18, 1951

Benjamin Carson was born in Detroit, Michigan. His mother Sonya had dropped out of school in the third grade, and married when she was only 13. When Benjamin Carson was only eight, his parents divorced, and Mrs. Carson was left to raise Benjamin and his older brother Curtis on her own. She worked at two, sometimes three, jobs at a time to provide for her boys.

Benjamin and his brother fell farther and farther behind in school. In fifth grade, Carson was at the bottom of his class. His classmates called him "dummy" and he developed a violent, uncontrollable temper.

When Mrs. Carson saw Benjamin's failing grades, she determined to turn her sons' lives around. She sharply limited the boys' television watching and refused to let them outside to play until they had finished their homework each day. She required them to read two library books a week and to give her written reports on their reading even though, with her own poor education, she could barely read what they had written.

Within a few weeks, Carson astonished his classmates by identifying rock samples his teacher had brought to class. He recognized them from one of the books he had read. "It was at that moment that I realized I wasn't stupid," he recalled later. Carson continued to amaze his classmates with his newfound knowledge and within a year he was at the top of his class.

The hunger for knowledge had taken hold of him, and he began to read voraciously on all subjects. He determined to become a physician, and he learned to control the violent temper that still threatened his future. After graduating with honors from his high school, he attended Yale University, where he earned a degree in Psychology.

From Yale, he went to the Medical School of the University of Michigan, where his interest shifted from psychiatry to neurosurgery. His excellent hand-eye coordination and three-dimensional reasoning skills made him a superior surgeon. After medical school he became a neurosurgery resident at the world-famous Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. At age 32, he became the hospital's Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery, a position he would hold for the next 29 years.

In 1987, Carson made medical history with an operation to separate a pair of Siamese twins. The Binder twins were born joined at the back of the head. Operations to separate twins joined in this way had always failed, resulting in the death of one or both of the infants. Carson agreed to undertake the operation. A 70-member surgical team, led by Dr. Carson, worked for 22 hours. At the end, the twins were successfully separated and can now survive independently.

Carson's other surgical innovations have included the first intra-uterine procedure to relieve pressure on the brain of a hydrocephalic fetal twin, and a hemispherectomy, in which an infant suffering from uncontrollable seizures has half of its brain removed. This stops the seizures, and the remaining half of the brain actually compensates for the missing hemisphere.

In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Carson has long been in constant demand as a public speaker, and devotes much of his time to meeting with groups of young people. In 2008, President George W. Bush awarded Dr. Carson the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor.

Dr. Carson's books include a memoir, Gifted Hands, and a motivational book, Think Big. Carson says the letters of "Think Big" stand for the following:

Talent: Our Creator has endowed all of us not just with the ability to sing, dance or throw a ball, but with intellectual talent. Start getting in touch with that part of you that is intellectual and develop that, and think of careers that will allow you to use that.

Honesty: If you lead a clean and honest life, you don't put skeletons in the closet. If you put skeletons in the closet, they definitely will come back just when you don't want to see them and ruin your life.

Insight: It comes from people who have already gone where you're trying to go. Learn from their triumphs and their mistakes.

Nice: If you're nice to people, then once they get over the suspicion of why you're being nice, they will be nice to you.

Knowledge: It makes you into a more valuable person. The more knowledge you have, the more people need you. It's an interesting phenomenon, but when people need you, they pay you, so you'll be okay in life.

Books: They are the mechanism for obtaining knowledge, as opposed to television.

In-Depth Learning: Learn for the sake of knowledge and understanding, rather than for the sake of impressing people or taking a test.

God: Never get too big for Him.

Dr. Carson opposed passage of the federal Affordable Care Act of 2010, often called the ACA or Obamacare. After retiring from his position as Director of Pediatric Neursurgery at Hopkins in 2012, Carson began to speak more frequently on other public issues and emerged as a vocal critic of the Obama administration. In the news media and political circles, he attracted considerable attention as a possible candidate for public office. In May 2015, he ended several months of speculation by announcing his intention to seek the Republican Party's nomination for President of the United States.

Where might you expect to find Dr. Ben Carson’s stronghold of support? Look no further than the deep south, where in my home state of Georgia, the GOP Presidential candidate scored a stunning victory in the 2015 Georgia State Convention Straw Poll. Dr. Carson won just over 76% of the convention vote easily dominating Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Governor Scott Walker (R-WI) who came in 2nd and 3rd with 7% and 6% of the vote respectively. Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) rounded out the top 5 in support.

The poll results were reported on the Facebook page of the Georgia Association of Republican County Chairmen with a special editorial comment congratulating Dr. Carson’s supporters who spread the poll around on social media.

While the Carson campaign can take some comfort in the win, the straw poll is hardly scientific, and at the end of the day, Georgians are much more likely to support a known-quantity like Scott Walker or Marco Rubio or perhaps even Mike Huckabee. Dr. Carson is exactly the kind of candidate that Georgia Republicans like to vote for, but his recent slip ups make the odds of that far less likely.

Quote:
John Hopkins Medicine

Benjamin Solomon Carson, Sr., M.D.

Benjamin Solomon Carson, Sr. had a childhood dream of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, horrible grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem, appeared to preclude the realization of that dream. But today he is the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, a position he has held since 1984 when he was 33 years old. He is a professor of neurosurgery, oncology, plastic surgery, and pediatrics.

In 1987, he gained world-wide recognition as the principal surgeon in the 22-hour separation of the Binder siamese twins from Germany. This was the first time occipital craniopagus twins had been separated with both surviving. The procedure employed hypothermic arrest, the deliberate lowering of body temperature, and circulatory arrest, and sophisticated surgical reconstructive techniques for success. In 1997, Dr. Carson was the primary surgeon in the team of South African and Zambian surgeons that separated type-2 vertical craniopagus twins (joined at the top of the head) in a 28-hour operation. It represents the first time such complexly joined siamese twins have been separated with both remaining neurologically normal. Most recently, Dr. Carson participated in the noble, but unsuccessful, humanitarian effort to separate adult Iranian craniopagus twins in Singapore. (Things learned from that case are already being used to help others).

He is noted for his use of cerebral hemispherectomy to control intractable seizures as well as for his work in craniofacial reconstructive surgery, achondroplasia (human dwarfism), and pediatric neuro-oncology (brain tumors).

Dr. Carson is a recipient of numerous honors and awards including more than 30 honorary doctorate degrees. He is a member of the American Academy of Achievement, the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans, the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and many other prestigious organizations. He was named by the Library of Congress as one of 89 Living Legends on the occasion of it’s 200th anniversary and in 2001, was chosen by CNN and Time Magazine as one of America’s top 20 physicians and scientists. He sits on many boards including the Board of Directors of Kellogg Company, Costco Wholesale Corporation, the American Academy of Achievement, and is an Emeritus Fellow of the Yale Corporation, the governing body of Yale University. In addition to his academic responsibilities, he is a highly sought after motivational speaker having spoken in venues as varied as high school graduations to the keynote address at the 1997 President’s National Prayer Breakfast.

He is the president and co-founder of the Carson Scholars Fund which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments. He hopes this program will positively change the perception of high academic achievers among their peers across our nation. He is also the president and co-founder of the Benevolent Endowment Network (BEN) Fund, a recently established organization which will provide grants to assist families with non-covered medical care expenses of pediatric neurosurgery patients with complex medical conditions.

His three books, Gifted Hands, THINK BIG, and most recently, The Big Picture, provide inspiration and insight for leading a successful life. He believes strongly in God and in America and believes that we all can play a positive role in creating a better world.

Dr. Carson has been married to Candy Carson for 28 years and has three sons. His wife and sons comprise the Carson Four, an accomplished string quartet. And yes, his mother, Sonya Carson, who made all of this possible, is alive and well.

Gifted Hands with Cuba Gooding, Jr as Dr. Carson.

And, you have the gall to look down your arrogant nose at a man of this caliber.

The photo below is of the twins before Dr. Carson successfully separated. They shared a portion of the brain.

He's infinitely more qualified than a half breed community organizing Chicago thug politician with a major cob up his ass and who has absolutely no knowledge or experience with medicine or health care. Or much of anything else for that matter.

That cretin in the WH doesn't even have the gonads to fight and win against a "Junior Varsity" team. The man-child is an absolute disgrace.

Thanks,
I've been on Dr. Carsons Fan list since I first got to know who he is.
He brings the lord into the political focus and there has never been a better time to do so.
His first televised prayer breakfast was classic and wonderfully articulated.
Watch O & B sitting next to him while he spoke and watch O's experssions. Many great clips on this one!
Super intelligent, politically aware and not an Elite agenda puppet.
Never slung mud or got messy in anything.
Can't wait to see him in the debates!

You say it true, J....Good day to you as well....

I like Dr. Carson and believe he would do well in a sitting cabinet position but will not pull the ticket for nomination..Just as you said, he's smart, articulate, personable and has some great ideas all for the betterment of the Country..That does not bode well with the greedy politicians whom see him as a threat to the "normal channels" played on Criminal Hill..

Likewise I doubt Dr. Carson would be interested in any thing other than the Presidential seat...He does need a little more time learning how to dodge the slim presently in office, as well.....
