Where might you expect to find Dr. Ben Carsons stronghold of support? Look no further than the deep south, where in my home state of Georgia, the GOP Presidential candidate scored a stunning victory in the 2015 Georgia State Convention Straw Poll. Dr. Carson won just over 76% of the convention vote easily dominating Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) and Governor Scott Walker (R-WI) who came in 2nd and 3rd with 7% and 6% of the vote respectively. Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) rounded out the top 5 in support.
The poll results were reported on the Facebook page of the Georgia Association of Republican County Chairmen with a special editorial comment congratulating Dr. Carsons supporters who spread the poll around on social media.
While the Carson campaign can take some comfort in the win, the straw poll is hardly scientific, and at the end of the day, Georgians are much more likely to support a known-quantity like Scott Walker or Marco Rubio or perhaps even Mike Huckabee. Dr. Carson is exactly the kind of candidate that Georgia Republicans like to vote for, but his recent slip ups make the odds of that far less likely.

Love to see a smart, accomplished, moral person in the white house. Automatically disqualifies 99% of politicians.

Certainly Dr. Ben Carson is a viable conservative candidate for the POTUS position, Poppa, and thanks to the current "commander," fabulous conservatives have assumed the approximate role of our Founding Fathers; to get King George III the hell away from ANYTHING to do with our free-market Western civilization!!!
Scott Walker for Pres., Ben Carson for Secretary of Health.

Since a straw poll is meaningless we just need to wait until 2016 to see how GA really votes in the primary, right?
If Dr. Carson is still around, that is.
That's a big boost. He should get more attention on the Sunday morning talk circuit and also get some more contributions now.
You'll really know he's ahead when Jeb makes a jab at him

The problem with these sorts of polls, is that they are only significant for about 25% of the voting population in any given region. It appears the only advantage to them, is to potentially increase campaign contributions and maybe influence a primary voter or two. At this point, everybody's guess is as good as anyone else's.

I bet someone around here could tell me how long it has been since Georgia voted for a winning Repub Primary candidate.

Who cares? It's a fallacy to believe that any such poll is magically able to predict the eventual winner. On the other hand, primaries and caucuses DO influence others, who have few ideas of their own. That's why States ( such as mine ) attempt to hold their primaries earlier and earlier - in an attempt to influence the other primaries.
It's as though there's a secret prize given to the State that first identifies the winner. I think it's a shame that so many Americans are so easily influenced anyway.

Yeah, but he's a bot of a freak. Let's hope he gets in the top 10. The freakier they are, the more they lessen the chances of ANY Republican winning the presidency.

That was pretty much the point of the statement. Georgia can't choose a winner even in the primaries.
