The head of a far-right extremist group, the Proud Boys, was arrested in Washington, D.C., on Monday evening less than a day before thousands of pro-Trump and far-right demonstrators are expected in the city.

Enrique Tarrio, 36, was taken into police custody and charged with destruction of property, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department.

The charge is related to his actions during last month's pro-Trump demonstration in D.C. that turned violent. Tarrio admitted to removing and burning a Black Lives Matter banner from a historically Black church, an action the Proud Boys are now being sued over.

According to the police statement, Tarrio is also being charged with possession of a high-capacity feeding device. Officers found two high-capacity firearm magazines with him when he was arrested.

The FBI says the Proud Boys have "ties to white nationalism," and the organization has previously been associated with acts of violence.

Three conservative groups have officially submitted permit applications to the National Park Service for events on Tuesday and Wednesday, as reported by USA Today. Women for America First and the Eighty Percent Coalition requested permits for thousands of people each. A third event run by the organization The Silent Majority filed a permit for several hundred attendees.

The protests coincides with the newly sworn-in 117th Congress official certification of the Electoral College ballots on Wednesday, marking the last step in the election before President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in on Jan. 20.

President Trump is supporting the protests and vows to attend.

Meanwhile, city leaders are preparing for possible violence, especially as reports show members of the Proud Boys are planning to attend the march dressed incognito.

In the lead-up to the demonstrations, information advising people how to secretly bring guns to the protests has been posted online, according to The Washington Post.

In a statement Sunday, Mayor Muriel Bowser advised D.C. residents to avoid areas near downtown and issued a reminder that firearms are illegal while in National Park Service areas, including the National Mall and Freedom Plaza, two areas where protesters are expected to gather.

Open possession of a firearm is also illegal throughout the city.

Bowser has also requested assistance from the National Guard for both Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the mayor's office, there will be around 114 members available "at any given time" and 340 available in total.

Bowser submitted the request to the commanding officer of the D.C. National Guard, Maj. Gen. William Walker, on New Year's Eve, according to a copy of the letter provided to NPR by the mayor's office. The Guard members will be unarmed and responsible for duties such as traffic control, in order to free up police.

Many streets in downtown D.C. will also be closed off starting Tuesday.

National figures have also expressed concern about the upcoming demonstrations.

Former Defense Secretary William Cohen told NPR's Morning Edition on Monday he thinks the events will present "a real challenge to maintain order and stability."

Cohen, who served in the Clinton administration, joined the other nine living former defense secretaries in an opinion piece that ran in The Washington Post Sunday condemning Trump's attempts to subvert the election and reaffirming that the military plays no role in political disputes. Cohen is concerned civil disruption could be used as a pretext to deploy military forces in the streets.

"There are things taking place which pose, I think, a threat to our domestic tranquility and security, and that is the president encouraging some of the more right-wing extremists to march on Washington and to protest," Cohen said. "And the indication is he's urging them to — it's going to be wild."

In a statement Monday evening, Washington, D.C., Attorney General Karl Racine condemned groups that plan to incite violence at the protests, referring to them as entities that "promote hate on a racial and religious basis." He did not specifically name any groups.

"While we respect their right to protest, we will not tolerate criminal behavior—and we should deny them the opportunity to cause chaos," he said.

Racine also echoed Bowser's request for residents to stay away from the area.

"Hate has no home in the District," he added. "Let's keep the peace, rather than provide this band of agitators any more attention than their divisive and hateful demonstrations will otherwise receive."

How does anyone know if there was voter fraud? So far, after multiple efforts to find any, there has been exactly zero found.

I don't know that Antifa even exists, other than in the minds of trumpsters, but I can absolutely assure you of this... if you are waiting to see severe right wing violence, you need wait no longer than tomorrow.

I have read your posts which are thought provoking and in doing so keep coming back to ~~dismissal by courts on some legal technicality is not determination of anything... The evidence was never brought forward for any type of determination..Do you know what the pleadings showed relative to the bases of fraud in votes?? I still do not.. You are right about the senseless violence coming from both sides - I once wrongly disputed that, but we all have eyes. If we open them, we can all see that both sides are handling things in a very unseemly manner. It is easy to close them and "see" only what we want to see (like I admittedly was guilty of previously), but for anyone to defend or look past what happened today in DC is just mind boggling.

I wrote you early yesterday morning before the most horrific day of complete and utter shock took hold of our country... While not unexpected given what we have heard for months, the morose reality shuttered within in watching it unfold..I am still reeling and find this chapter of history will be a blemish beyond pale!!! Asking “ how” we got here is not even needed... We know and that is the unsurmountable sting!

The only positive I find in any of it was the recitation of many a politician that acknowledged a need to consider their own roles, words, and actions... I just pray they take that scared shitle*** attitude they had, by what they endured to heart and see only so much pushing and they will in fact have what they incited...

How did they succeed getting in, know what specific floors to go to and specific offices to enter?? Why do we have videos of capital hill police opening gated areas and allowing people in?
And pipe bombs that were planted outside both the Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters, not swept or secured before the biggest event of the election?? With all senators and Congress the VP in attendance??
Then the other glaring issue~~? That threat of a plane hitting the Capitol?? WTH

Was foreign or domestic agents helped to trigger or enact an existing plan??? Is it conspiracy?? Investigators are considering whether a Monday breach of an air traffic control radio frequency should be looked at in connection to Thursday's events. In the radio breach, a recorded message threatened to fly an airplane into the Capitol on Wednesday. The digitized voice said that the strike would be in retaliation for last January's U.S. drone attack that killed Iranian Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani.

Reply~Yes, I think to a certain degree yes he did. Although he’s never been known for using proper language in anything it may not have been his intent to encourage any such action but it certainly didn’t help anything either... If he withheld orders to bring in the National guard this was Absolutely and unequivocally wrong..He should not have had been asked to do so he should’ve already done it and he certainly shouldn’t have denied it.

4) Could trump have discouraged his followers from engaging in violence well ahead of yesterday, had he wanted to?

Reply~~ Yes he could have and should have. In his speeches he should’ve made it clear he did not want any violence in any capacity and should’ve been strong when he did speak out leaving out the rhetoric on the stolen election. Everyone there knew why they were there and everyone not there knew why they were there he should’ve merely said stop, go home, leave in peace etc.

5) Do you think that what happened is what trump was hoping would happen?

Reply~~ I would be lying to tell you that that same question hadn’t crossed my mind. All I can dance to bring him I can only answer for me and that is that I sincerely hope with my entire soul that he would not be thanking such. I do not yet have a definitive answer for that.
