Totally non political and well I just enjoy them!!!! Over the last three months I lost two of my pups to old age and cancer. I still have lady but she is 13 now and getting older and slower so the obvious is going to happen. I have been researching different kinds of pets specifically Pups and possibly a kitten about the same age so tyhey can grow up together. My wife and I are really looking for a decent sized pup with relatively short hair so there isnt so much mess but thats not a disqlualifier. Any suggestions please?

You might consider a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. They are short haired, about 35 pounds, and are known as the "nanny dogs" for their wonderful dispositions, particularly around kids. Most are not dog aggressive, highly trainable, and have a lifespan of 12 to 16 years. I don't know what the price range is. Contact the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club of America for more information. If you think the breed will suit your needs, I do have a short AKC video on them I would be happy to send you.

Go to the pound and get one that's about to be euthanized.

I always enjoyed a German Shorthaired Pointer. They are easy to train at least all of the females that I had were. They are fun to take out in the field after they are trained and watch them point birds. If you are a hunter it makes bird hunting fun. The dogs are liver and white and with a short coat they are nice for indoors as well. They were always gentle around my two girls and son as well,

Sometimes that is a good idea but, more often than not, it is a problem waiting to happen. People place dogs at the humane societies for three main reasons.
1 The dog has a major temperament problem, has bitten a family member, particularly a child,or is so dog aggressive that walking the dog down the street means you have to be ready to control the animal when goes after another dog. If the dog is five pounds, then you can stop it easily but if your dog aggressive dog is 50 pounds of solid muscle you are in trouble. Or the dog may be so destructive that everything in your house may be ruined while you are at work, and the dog may not be willing to be confined to a dog cage. He may become hysterical and start damaging himself because he can not be controlled. 75% of the dogs that are in the humane society care have major behavior problem.

2 The dog may have a major health problem, from cancer to deafness, from serious allergy problems requiring thousands of dollars to keep under control. Dogs with achalasia, to having only one kidney, or having cateracts, or severe dysplasia and rapidly loosing his ability to walk.

3 The dog may have severe separation anxiety which is often not solveable. Or he may be highly reactive to noises, a car backfiring or a police siren may set him off for hours. Do you want to deal with such dogs. Unfortunately humane societies seldom tell the truth when they want a dog out of the facility. Breed rescue groups are often a better solution, but make sure that it is a group willing to put to sleep all dogs that are not suitable for the average family pet.
A good breeder who will work with you is well worth the money for the puppy.

A puppy will train easier as it becomes accustomed to you and your family. Also the puppy will associate your various voices as its master and train to the whole family as it grows. If you are going to use the dog for hunting or guarding your property or just as a friend then purchase the dog breed as a puppy and train accordingly. I always liked the females because they were more protective of the family especially the children.

One of the main reasons for getting a puppy from a reliable breeder is the brain development of the puppy. Years of research has shown that from day 3 to day 16, a specific set of handling techniques on the puppy develops a much larger growth of new brain cells and the electrical pathways that make the dog more easily trained and more receptive to new experiences. These simple exercises include holding the puppy on its back for 10 seconds, putting it on a cold towel for 10 seconds, gently pinching it between the toes for 3 seconds, holding it with its head down for ten seconds. All these exercises are time consuming if the litter is large, but they cause the brain pathways to improve and be about 25% larger which makes the dog more trainable for everything from field work to tracking to working as a service dog. All are done before the dogs eyes are even open and will only be done by responsible breeders who are up on the research. Both our last Cane Corso and our Welsh terrier were worked this way and the results as far as both obedience and service therapy training have been amazing. That is just one more reason to research the breed, the breeder and the techniques used in training the pup if you really want an extra trainable and wonderful companion.

Very interesting thank you for the information now if I could only be about 40 years younger I would go out and look for a puppy.

The other choice is to find a breeder who uses those techniques and get a retired show dog from her or him. The dogs have been exposed to lots of puppies, noises and people all their lives, gotten used to traveling o shows being examined by strangers and often going into the ring with new people they have never met. Such dogs are very adaptable and usually make great pets. They will probably have been spayed before going to their new homes. Just choose the breed and the breeder carefully.

I would suggest a Cane Corso Mastiff rather than a rottweiler, more stable temperaments, generally very trainable and at 130 to 150 pounds of solid muscle, very intemidating to those who are unwelcome. Google the breed for photos. Our therapy dogs have included 3 corsos, and they have been very tractable and healthy, although, like the Rotts, short lived (8 to 10 years) Since the Corsos are not mass bred the breeders are usually very responsible, while Rotts that are not puppy mill dogs are hard to find.

HI all. My wife and I have always picked our pups from the Animal Humane Society in the past. We have tried to get them as young as possible. But the next time were not sure which way we want to go. We have one puppy left of the three we had after they passed from old age. Our remaining puppy Lady is about 13 or 14. Unfortunately ew thikm she may be getting senile. Seriously! Thank you all for your reponses!
