The one highly successful contemporary comedian that comes to mind who entertains at the level of the ones you mention in your post is Jerry Seinfeld. We didn't have a TV until I was in fourth or fifth grade but I watched the cartoons at the saturday matinee at several of the theaters in town for about 25 cents. Sometimes they would run all morning.
