All great points maureenthannon, unfortunately we have a long way to go on the mental illness issue. I have friends who have a son who has multiple personalities and has been in all kinds of troubles, including jumping off a bridge, but, if he won’t self admit, then there is nothing that can be done. Finally after several trips to the county slam, he was in for a month without any meds and ended up smacking a guard and was finally ordered to get house arrest instead of jail and was living back with his parents and was given his medication every day religiously. Had he not had good parental support things would be very different for him and I know he would be out there with a gun robbing 7-11’s to get by, crazy, off his meds. We all see the people I’m talking about , but, we don’t notice them. They sit at a bus stop or are sleeping on a bench, pushing a grocerie cart, sitting on a sidewalk or a doorway. It seems we have become ammune to noticing the mentally ill. The trouble is, they are out there in droves. If we want to do something about gun control, then we have to deal with the mentally ill as a part of that solution, and if you look around sometime and “notice” the people around you, you would realize, I don’t think I would want that person to have a weapon. It seems like one of the many things we need to tighten up on. At the Parkland shooting, that young man should have been in or under some kind of mental institution or care and that entire incident should never have happened. When there are that many warning signs, there is plenty of blame to go around, the local sheriff, the FBI, school councilors etc. like most bad things that have happened, new laws wouldn’t have prevented them, it turned out to be that someone didn’t say something or something slipped through the cracks and there were big consequences to pay.
