Ok, Seriously, Ben Johnson. The BEST horsemen in Hollywood. Probably in more westerners than ALL the rest.

I read in a horse magazine several years ago that the best horsemen among recent Hollywood stars are easily Bob Duval & Tommy Lee Jones.

Slat, if I remember correctly you were doing research for LJ, if she enjoys reading about the west, I would recommend Elmer Kelton (The Day the Cowboys Quit & The Time it Never Rained), and Louis LeAmour (The Sacketts). The two best western writers IMHO.

Leaving Ben Johnson off the list should be a hanging offense! Again, though...not my list, but one copied from the internet.

I know the Sacketts well. I haven't read the other two. Thanks for putting them up here.

Actuallly, Peewee, although I'm sure L-J has a fondness for cowboys...my research for her had to do specifically with Ken Curtis (Festus from Gunsmoke) and his singing career prior to his being in western movies and eventually Gunsmoke. I had sent her a couple of videos of him singing, and it 'spurred' her interest.

Ah so, Son of the Pioneers, like Roy Rogers. I think he got to sing on a few Gun Smoke episodes. I saw an old black and white early Hollywood movie he starred in once and he sang in that one too. Send her Ghost Riders in the Sky, everybody loves that one.

Vaughn Monroe did my favorite cover of 'Ghost Riders In The Sky.' I sent L-J videos of Curtis doing 'Noah's Dove,' and 'Tumbling Tumbleweeds.' Mr. Curtis also did a few episodes with Richard Boone in 'Have Gun Will Travel,' singing in at least one...'Noah's Dove.'

I'm sure I've heard it, just don't recall that title. My mom got me hooked on gospel and country and western. We often went to all night singing's of both. She had a cousin who sang with the original Oakridge Quartet. I've saw Willie sing when he had short hair. Kissed by Loretta Lynn (must of been 5) Saw Ray Stevens the year 'I'm a long Tall Texan' came out or it may have 'Clyde the Camel'. She also worked at School Pictures and would bring home photos of movie stars and famous people. At one time I had 8x10 glossies of all my favorite movie and tv stars. My most precious story is meeting Tarzan (Johnny Weismiller), Little League coach took us to the airport as he was stopping over in our town. One kid on the team said "your not Tarzan", "your old". Tarzan said, yes I am, the tv shows you watch are old movies of me when I was younger. Dewight, the kid, then said "then do the Tarzan yell" and he did, it was awesome to a 8 or 9 year old. Better than meeting the president any day. If you enjoy good gospel, The Cathedrals with George Younce and Glen Payne are the best, bar none. I'm in a chatty mood today for some reason. Adios for now.

Here's all three songs I mentioned in my post:

I grew up watching Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan, and would'a killed to have met him. Ray Stevens and Loretta Lynn would'a been a thrill, also. Gospel music is one of my favorite, and I recall my favorites being soloists Tennessee Ernie Ford and George Beverly Shea. Gospel music can be both soothing and uplifting. With the rest of my family, they like the Gaithers. Willie Nelson's home town is just a stone's throw from my hamlet. He was born and raised in West, Texas, just north of Waco about 25-30 miles. That is about 20 miles east of my home on Lake Whitney, Texas.

I just finished looking up Nora's Song and saw Tennessee Ernie Ford and remembering how much I loved 16 Tons and Jimmy Deans - Big Bad John. Thanks for the forwards. Must be memory lane day, and Jim Reeves was pure silk. Mark Lowery's 'Mary Did You Know' always moves me as does 'I Can Only Imagine'.
It was a sweeter, kinder and more gentler time to be a kid, after a fist fight you were soon friends again.

Trivia on Ken Curtis. He was a singer with the Tommy Dorsey Band. Was at one time the lead singer for Sons of the Pioneer. On of their biggest hits, Ghost Riders in the Sky. At one time his Father in Law was John Ford.

While researching Ken Curtis for LindaJoy, I ran across these actors who 'constitute a dream cast for the ultimate western.' What do you think, and who would you add? The only two I couldn't identify by name were soon recognized by Googling them...Burton Gilliam & Iron Eyes Cody. They are not necessarily in any order.

You never think of him being that old, born in 1916. My mom was born in 1933 and I'm 63. Time flies.

Heard a good one today. The best thing about millennials is we won't have to worry about them for another thousand years.

In re-reading this post of yours, I decided to look up The Cathedrals. I had not heard of them for years, and wanted to refresh myself with their music. The following is the one I first pulled up, and it was credited to the Gaithers as the authors.

Enjoy, Peewee
