What I dispute is the it went ' solidly" and after the 1964 Civil Rights act. I have also proven that those states have tended to cross party lines more often than solid blue states like NY or Massachusetts . So far from the evidence at hand this is what we know.
1) Southern States like candidates from the South regardless of ideological differences and will support someone like Carter or Clinton. Perhaps this is due to the history of the carpetbaggers which made them distrust northern politicians.
2) Even a very PRO Black candidate like Bill Clinton was able to secure nearly half those states.

I think the real change happened after 1980 when the south turned on native son Carter and the emergence of the evangelical v**e and moral majority in the 80s lead by Falwell. That was the final turning point as the evidence suggests. Had the GOP had ANYONE but Dole in 1996.
