There is among some of the denizens of Trumpworld a misperception of the way Donald Trump was seen in New York prior to his running for president. Many in Trumpworld believe that Trump was an admired and respected real estate developer, until he ran as a conservative, and then “liberal” New York turned on him.
That is pure nonsense. Trump was never admired in New York, even if he wasn’t always particularly loathed.
In the 1980s Trump was seen primarily as the spoiled scion of a somewhat r****t real estate tycoon, with delusions of grandeur. That was manifest in his dabbling in so many failed endeavors — Trump Airlines, Atlantic City Casinos, the Plaza Hotel, GM Building — many of which he overpaid for — which contributed to their failures. That left Trump the butt of many jokes, that’s for sure, when people thought of him at all. When people did think of him it was because he was pushing himself in front of the public, unwelcome and uninvited.
All of that came crashing down upon him after his bankruptcies in the 1990s. He was never regarded with anything but contempt since then.
You see, if Trump were a great business success, Wall Street would be lining up to throw money at him. They won’t even return his calls, and they haven’t since 1995. That means the only people who will lend to Trump are far more shady than anyone in Trumpworld would care to admit.
Trump was never what he pretends to be in New York (and what Trumpworld so desperately needs to believe that they ignore all of the evidence into Trump’s incompetence and corruption) — a great real estate developer. He was, and is, considered a joke among the actual real estate moguls in New York, although his father clearly was a player in the Outer Boroughs.
How can that be, you ask? Trump’s name is plastered on buildings all over New York. How can he not be a great real estate developer?
Because he doesn’t own these buildings. His family business manages them, and part of the management agreement was to put the Trump name on the structure. That is why it is so easy to strip the Trump name from these building today, as disgust at Trump as so-called president has created a massive anti-Trump backlash against him. Besides, many of us always assumed that there was something illicit behind the financing of these projects. Trump’s ongoing debasement before the Russians as president merely reinforces that view.
So for most New Yorkers, Trump was just a punchline for many decades, a view that was confirmed by his ridiculous posing on “The Apprentice” (Trump’s not a real estate mogul, but got to play one on TV). That anyone took this r****t, corrupt imbecile seriously was always hard to understand, but nothing he has done since the e******n of 2016 has altered that view — and plenty that he has done has reinforced it. You will find New Yorkers who love Trump, both in the city and throughout the state. There is no doubt about that. In Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, however, they will be in a very distinct minority.
For most of us he is what we have always thought him to be: a corrupt moral reprobate, financial bankrupt and, now, admitted sexual predator. But it also turns out that he is a tool of the Kremlin, so it’s even worse than we thought.
We are waiting patiently, however, for his term to end. Then we will be happy to see him back in Manhattan, on Court Street. Under indictment.
Fiat justitia ruat caelum.
