My father had a favorite thing to say about religion in governmentÂ…that you cannot legislate morality. What is moral to one is discrimination to another. Any and all religions have their time of murder and intolerance. Religions are human creations and fall far short their ideals. Zealots and radicals are able to commit all manner of atrocities in the name of God. The only path to peace is through tolerance. Jesus himself cited the Golden Rule as one of two most important commandments: Treat your neighbor as yourself. Not Christian neighbor, not Muslim neighbor. We have lost this value over my lifetime, most notably in politics, but also in everyday life. I only hope that we can and will find our back before we lose the republic.
