Further Decline in the Value of the Costco Hot Dog

David Henderson

In July 2013, I wrote a post on EconLog titled “The Economics of Self-Imposed Price Ceilings.” The case in point was the Costco hot dog. I pointed out that by keeping the price of a hot dog and a soda with free refills at $1.50, Costco over time, to reduce losses, reduced the quality of the product. I might have been wrong in saying that the new hot dog is inferior to the old Hebrew National brand. The brand that Costco shifted to is still quite good.

But I was not wrong in saying that Costco quit letting the customer turn a crank that yielded sauerkraut and instead put sauerkraut behind the counter.

Two further changes have happened, one that I noticed in the last year or two and one that I noticed today. At some point in the last year or two, Costco discontinued the behind-the-counter sauerkraut.

Today, I noticed another change. Costco has discontinued the onions that you used to get by turning the crank. So now all you get is mustard, ketchup, and relish.

In case you’re wondering, of course I’m not advocating that a government agency regulate Costco’s choices about hot dogs. I’m simply pointing out predictable consequences of price freezes in a time of inflation even when the freezes are self-imposed.

President Biden and Democratic tax raisers always say the rich don’t pay their “fair share.” Maybe one reason this line works politically is that most v**ers have no idea who really pays how much in taxes. Especially l*****t Democraps.

“To the best of your knowledge,” asked a new poll, “how much do you think the top 1% of taxpayers by income account for in terms of share of total federal income taxes paid: 1%, 12%, 42%, or 64%?”

The correct answer, as of 2020, is 42%. But less than a quarter of those surveyed guessed right. Twenty-two percent (including more than a third of Democrats) thought the top 1% of taxpayers paid only 1% of income taxes, which is wildly off the mark. Twenty-five percent suggested it was 12% of revenue. Nineteen percent shrugged and said they weren’t sure. As a communications strategy, Republicans could, apparently. do worse than simply repeat the official IRS data over and over.

"Yes, I made $400.00 selling that horse to Ed down the road. Should I be required to report that cash t***saction to the Federal Government because ownership of that land makes me worth millions?"

Nope.

That being said, I'm simply stating the idea that everyone, rich or not, HAS to have income of >some sort< to live,
regardless of what land, stocks, or number of cows you have. This, imo, is a illy thing to even argue about.

If you made $400 you should include it as income on your tax return. Or, you can be like Joe Biden, lie, and say it was a loan repayment.

Biden’s Labor Department just imposed 300 pages of new rules. They say it will help freelancers.

Apparently, the l*****ts didn’t notice how similar rules in California HURT freelancers!

I covered California’s “protect freelancer” law four years ago.

California politicians and the media claimed freelancers were being abused.

Their solution: a new law, AB5, that reclassified millions of them as staff employees—whether they liked it or not.

Politicians claimed businesses would now be forced to pay them, “wages and benefits that they deserve.”

“In reality, what's actually happening is they’re just letting them all go,” said freelance musician Ari Herstand.

4 years later, the results are in:

So many careers were ruined that California exempted more than a hundred industries, but freelancers STILL lost their jobs.

Yet now the Labor Department is forcing the rest of the country to be more like California?

Why? Watch the video to find out.

CA lost one Representative in Congress and at this rate will lose more. Sending i******s to CA may restore the Representative but it won't pay off the budget deficit that will keep increasing as long as the 1%ers leave CA and are replaced by the 50%ers who don't pay taxes.

Next time, do your homework first before you expose your ignorance to the whole world.

Homes cost more in New York on average. A lot more than 0.19%. County-specific charges can further add to these costs, creating local variations in property tax rates. https://smartasset.com/taxes/new-york-property-tax-calculator
Ca has a much lower property tax rate, but the taxes paid per home are much higher than in other states because the property values are ridiculously high.

Bidenflation is because there is no such thing as a free lunch. When the Fed prints more money to increase the money supply, that causes inflation. Erasing student loan debt? Who is paying for it? The taxpayers, many of whom didn't attend college. Take your silly arguments and go play on the freeway. No one cares that other countries have higher inflation. We are not other countries. 84% of Americans consider inflation a serious problem.

Taxes in New York. New York has nine income tax rates: the lowest rate is 4% and the highest rate is 10.9%. Plus city taxes in New York. 4%. Average Sales Tax (With Local): 8.253%. New York has state sales tax of 4% , and allows local governments to collect a local option sales tax of up to 4.875%. There are a total of 642 local tax jurisdictions across the state,

Taxes in Texas. Texas State Tax Quick Facts. Income tax: None. Sales tax: 6.25% (local tax: 0% - 2%) Property tax: 1.74% average effective rate. Gas tax: 20 cents per gallon of regular gasoline and diesel. The Lone Star State is one of only a few states that collect no income taxes of any kind.

Rasmussen Poll: Bidenflation Continues Haunting Biden
by: Matt Palumbo April 09, 2024

According to the latest from Rasmussen Reports, the Bidenflation nightmare isn’t going away for Biden anytime soon:

Inflation remains a very serious problem, according to a majority of v**ers who expect it to impact the p**********l e******n in November.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 84% of Likely U.S. v**ers believe inflation is a serious problem, including 57% who think the problem is Very Serious. Only 14% don’t consider inflation to be a serious problem.

Earlier this week, Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman voiced concerns that a rebound in inflation could necessitate rate hikes.

The Biden campaign briefly made Bideonomics central to their campaign’s identity - only to ditch that after a few months due to how poorly it polled. So bleak are the Biden campaign’s prospects that an internal Democrat Party memo recently showed panic over their “nonpartisan” v***r r**********n efforts because they were unintentionally helping Trump.

According to recent reporting in the Wall Street Journal, Trump is leading Biden in six of the seven most competitive states heading into the 2024 e******n, with Trump leading between 2-8 percentage points in those six states; Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina. This is on a b****t including third party and independent candidates (such as RFK Jr.). Trump’s lead is similar on a sample b****t only between him and Biden. Wisconsin is the only exception among battleground states, with Biden leading by 3-points on the multi-candidate b****t, but tied in a head-to-head against Trump.

What good is Biden's greater range of knowledge when his brain is mush and he isn't calling the shots? Of course, he can find Ukraine on a map. That's the country that made his family rich.
