'Modern day Neville Chamberlains': Conservative scorches GOP's 'macho men' who have fallen in love with Putin

In his column for the Daily Beast, conservative Matt Lewis laid into Republicans who have decided to take sides with Vladimir Putin against Ukraine, calling them posturing appeasers who are in the thrall of the Russian strongman.

Getting right to the point, he compared them to British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain who is most notable for the Munich Agreement of 1938 which ceded parts of Czechoslovakia to Adolph Hitler.


As Lewis notes, choosing to side with Russia over Ukraine is causing a schism within the Republican Party -- and not to their credit.

"In one corner are the Reagan Republicans who don’t trust Vladimir Putin, the ex-KGB agent, and who believe it’s dangerous to allow regimes to invade their neighbors. In the other corner are the America Firsters who would sit on their hands if Russia invaded and occupied Ukraine," he wrote before adding, "In recent years, rather than channeling Reagan, too many Republicans have taken a page from Russian propaganda. Trump famously defended Putin in 2017 by asking, 'You think our country’s so innocent?'"


The columnist suggests that this change of heart -- which was begun by the former president -- represents a huge shift for the party that long despised Russia.

"For years, foreign policy hawks invoked the icon of appeasement, Neville Chamberlain, to emasculate their more dovish liberal opponents. Today, the macho men on the right are arguing that an illegal incursion by an authoritarian regime into a European nation-state isn’t our business. It’s Chamberlain’s folly delivered with a confident Churchillian swagger," he wrote before later adding that one faction among conservatives who defend Putin insist they are standing up for "Christian values."

Citing Richard Hanania, of the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology, who wrote, “Russian opposition to L**T triggers American elites more than anti-gay laws and practices elsewhere because Russia is a white nation that justifies its policies based on an appeal to Christian values,” Lewis wrote, "According to this worldview, hostility towards Russia is a proxy war against Christian conservatives in America (and it would be disproportionately fought by Christian conservatives from America)."


Conceding, "To be sure, in the wake of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan it is understandable that many Americans are afraid of being drawn into another quagmire," Lewis added, " But the opposite impulse—the desire to retreat from the world (or looking the other way while bullies dominate other countries)—is equally dangerous and provocative."

He then warned, "As Neville Chamberlain belatedly learned, Munich was an illusory, temporary fix. Bullies have to be confronted at some point."

Allen Weisselberg couldn't explain how the value of one $400M Trump property doubled in one year: report

Allen Weisselberg, former chief financial officer for the Trump Organization, faced difficulty explaining how one of the company's properties had been valued at approximately 435 million — more than double what it had been valued the year before — according to newly released documents.

On Tuesday, January 18, the documents were released by New York Attorney General Letitia James' office. "'Mr. Weisselberg testified that he could not explain this discrepancy," the documents reportedly said.

According to Business Insider, there is incriminating documentation that alleges assets throughout former President Donald Trump's financial portfolio of businesses and real estate properties had been mis-valued. There is also speculation that the valuations could be part of an elaborate financial fraud scheme.

On the list of properties, the Trump International Golf Club Scotland was highlighted.

Officials believe the increased value appears to center on "assuming the right to build 2,500 luxury homes on the property – despite approval to build fewer than 1,500 holiday apartments and golf villas."

On Wednesday, January 19 the Trump Organization released a statement criticizing the investigation, and arguing that it is a politically-motivated tactic aimed at damaging the former president.

"The only one misleading the public is Letitia James. She defrauded New Yorkers by basing her entire candidacy on a promise to get Trump at all costs without having seen a shred of evidence and in violation of every conceivable ethical rule," said the statement.

The latest development comes months after Weisselberg was charged with multiple offenses in connection with an alleged tax evasion scheme involving the Trump Organization.

It would appear that there isn't any e******n that a Republican loses that would be considered a f**r e******n, even when there's a difference as wide as this one. The guy didn't get over 20% of the v**es and he wont concede that he lost. That is "sore-buttedness," if there ever was one. It is outwardly childish and unbecoming of an adult.

U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick was sworn in as the first Black woman to represent the predominantly Democratic 20th District in Florida on Tuesday, but her Republican opponent she defeated by a landslide the week before, still has not conceded the race.

Cherfilus-McCormick won the special e******n for the 20th District on Jan. 11, securing 78.7 percent of the v**e over Jason Mariner’s 19.6 percent. However, Mariner won’t concede the e******n and has filed a lawsuit alleging b****t issues.

Mariner pointed to media bias in e******n coverage the day after his defeat.

“People are supposed to have a fair shake at choosing governance,” Mariner told reporters in a video posted on his campaign Facebook page. “That didn’t get that in this race because the media was so slanted and biased.”

Cherfilus-McCormick fills the seat left vacant by the late Democratic U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, who had held the seat since 2013. Hastings died of pancreatic cancer in April. Cherfilus-McCormick will serve the rest of Hastings’ term for the district that cover parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

Despite losing the e******n, Mariner posted a video the following day with a trio of Black v**ers vocalizing their support for him.

“I’ve just begun to fight. Rock-N-Roll, America,” Mariner wrote in the caption.

Mariner has received criticism from both sides for his refusal to concede. Some have compared Mariner’s move to fellow Republican former President Donald Trump’s resistance to his November 2020 loss to President Joe Biden.

Although he conceded to Biden in Jan. 7, 2021, two months after the e******n and the day after the Capitol r**t, he still claims that his ree******n bid was stolen. Trump, the most influential figure in the Republican Party, claims the country’s v****g system is “flawed.”

Trump and his campaign and followers have filed over five dozen lawsuits challenging the e******n, hoping to overturn the results based on unfounded claims of v****g fraud and inconsistencies.

Since the e******ns, Republicans in several states have pushed legislation to address “e******n integrity.” A recent Washington Post report found that “at least 163 Republicans who have embraced Trump’s false claims are running for statewide positions that would give them authority over the administration of e******ns.”

Mariner told reporters last Wednesday, “we’ll also have some stuff coming out that we’ve recently discovered,” but his campaign has not released further details.

Cherfilus-McCormick’s win increases the Democrats’ advantage in the U.S. House to 222-212. She will have to fight for ree******n again in the state’s August primary e******n. Mariner said last Wednesday he would be pursuing the seat again.
