After a single Federal Reserve rate hike of 75bps, I am noticing a trend among mainstream economists whipping out their crystal balls and predicting an almost immediate reversion to deflationary conditions. For most of these people, I would suggest that they keep their crystal balls in their pants; they have been consistently wrong and it's time for them to shut up. If you were predicting that inflation would be "t***sitory" a couple of years ago, then you have no right to act like you are an economist today.

It's going to take a lot more than one semi-aggressive rate hike from the central bank to stop the inflation problem, and when I say "inflation" I am talking about price inflation, not the mere increase in money supply or a bubble in stock markets. There are far too many economists out there that don't even grasp what true inflation really entails.

There are certain sectors of the economy that will indeed see deflationary pressures. Real GDP, for example, is witnessing a decline. U.S. wages are stagnant in comparison to prices. Housing sales are now falling rapidly. Clearly, there is a mix of inflationary and deflationary elements within the same economic crisis. In other words, it's a stagflation event.

An area in which prices continue to rise without much relent is energy. The mainstream blames this almost entirely on Russia's conflict with Ukraine and the evolving sanctions against Russian oil and natural gas. However, gas prices were spiking well before Russia ever invaded Ukraine. Inflation in the overall economy hit 40-year highs long before Ukraine became an issue.

Let's not pretend like we don't know the cause of all of this. It is caused by fiat money printing by the Federal Reserve since 2008, and central banks, in general, are the culprits. The bankers can fund or refuse to fund wh**ever they wish. Government politicians play their role in creating inflation by asking for the money, but it is the Fed that decides if they create the money. The government has zero power to dictate policy to the Fed. The central bank could print us into oblivion if they wished, which is essentially what they have done.

In the early 1970s, Richard Nixon, at the request of central bankers, removed the dollar from the last vestiges of the gold standard. Central banks shifted away from gold as the primary trade mechanism between governments and started switching over to Special Drawing Rights; the IMF's basket currency system. Not surprisingly, the dollar began an immediate spiral and its buying power began to crash. Stagflation became a household concern throughout the 70s.

This problem was mitigated eventually as the dollar's world reserve status grew. Basically, we exported many of our dollars overseas for use in global trade, and, by extension, we also exported a lot of our inflation/stagflation. As long as the dollar remained the premier reserve currency, most of the consequences of central bank fiat printing would not be felt by the general populace. In terms of gasoline, the dollar has been the petro-currency for decades which allowed us to keep prices in the U.S. lower than in many countries.

But things are changing. The dollar's portion of global trade has been in decline for the past several years, and the Fed just keeps creating more greenbacks from nothing. In 2020 alone, the Fed conjured $6 trillion to fuel the C***D stimulus response, pumping all that money directly into the system through C***D checks and PPP loans. In order for this process to continue, the dollar's global percentage of trade would have to keep growing in order to export U.S. inflation overseas. This is not happening. The dollar's percentage of global trade is in reversion.

We are dealing with the end of a cycle that started in the 1970s. We are going back to the beginning.

Furthermore, the gas crisis in the late 70s and early 80s was also driven by the Iranian revolution and the removal of Iranian oil supplies from the global market. This created a loss of around 7 percent of total oil from markets, but it resulted in gas prices exploding from 65 cents in 1978 to $1.35 in 1981. Prices more than doubled in the span of three years and never went back to where they were before the crisis.

As in the late 1970s, we also have a supply chain issue with an OPEC nation. The Russian portion of the global oil export market was around 10 percent in 2020, but Europe relies on Russia for around 25 percent of its total oil consumption. With the EU now cutting off that supply of oil, they will have to go to other exporters to get what they need, and this is reducing the amount of supply available to western countries. The Russians simply adapted and are now selling more oil at a discount to major eastern markets like China and India. But for the rest of us, Europe's thirst for oil is going to continue to cause price expansion as supplies falter.

So where does this leave us? Our situation is measurably worse than the 1970s for a few reasons, notably the fact that our country is in far more debt, foreign treasury and dollar holdings are in decline, and the economic conflict with Russia is far more egregious than our troubles with Iran in the 70s. I suspect we will see at least a 300 percent markup in gas prices from pre-p******c lows, which were around $2.60 per gallon for regular. Meaning, prices will continue to climb over the course of this year and level out around $7.50 per gallon by the beginning of 2023.

Some people will argue that declining demand will stop rising prices and might even cut prices back to $3 per gallon in the near term. I am doubtful. The stagflation problem does not only revolve around demand, there are many other factors at play. Unless we see a drop in demand similar to what we saw at the beginning of the p******c lockdowns, there is little chance there will be a reversal of that size or any reversal in prices for that matter.

Also, for anyone hoping that U.S. shale or OPEC will pick up the slack from Russia, this is also not going to happen. Oil industry experts have already noted that because of inflation and lack of manpower there will not be a major uptick in oil pumping and so shortages will continue for some time.

What does this mean for the wider economy? Inflation in necessities means an implosion in retail. People will divert funds away from other purchases to cover gas and energy costs. Expensive gas also means expensive freight rates, which means higher prices for everything else on the store shelves. Expensive gas will also cause smaller freight companies to go bankrupt or close up shop, along with higher interest rates being instituted by the Fed. My own grandfather lost his trucking and freight company in the 1970s for this exact reason.

In turn, less freight means less supply, which in turn means higher prices on everything. It's a terrible cycle. The point is, you should expect gas prices to remain very high if not go higher over the course of this year, and this will affect everything else in terms of your pocketbook and your life. Don't put too much stock in the people claiming deflation is on the way; not in prices of necessities, it's not.

Eventually, lack of demand will slow price increases but not until we are much higher than the current national average of $5 a gallon. And, if you live in a state with high gas taxes like California, then be prepared for double-digit costs at the pump.

Big news! House Freedom Fund candidate Harriet Hageman (R-WY) has opened a 30-point lead over Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Swamp) in the Republican primary e******n for Congress in Wyoming.

HFF has been behind Hageman from the start. She is a true Freedom Caucus conservative: a tireless, principled fighter who got into politics to save our country.

Please join us in pushing Harriet Hageman on to victory!

Hageman has been battling Washington overreach for decades. She took on President Bill Clinton, the EPA, the USDA, and every federal agency that tried to impose its woke values on the people of Wyoming.

Harriet Hageman has proven her guts, smarts, and values in the arena up against the Deep State. She is precisely the kind of fighter we need in Congress.

Conversely, Liz Cheney has been a disgrace. The media plays up her v**es against President Trump, but the campaign to defeat her is much bigger than a few v**es.

Liz Cheney betrayed all conservatives by casting her lot with the media, the corporations, and the woke cabal trying to tear down this country. Joe Biden has plunged our economy into crisis; he's opened our borders, triggered a violent crime wave, and aided and abetted the radicalization of our schools and sexualization of our children.

And through it all, Liz Cheney has spent her time harassing conservative leaders, helping Nancy Pelosi's J****** 6 witch hunt, and attacking the people who put her in office.

******* Cheney has to go. And she will. **********

We have to make sure a true conservative replaces her, and that's where we come in. The House Freedom Fund is committed to helping Harriet Hageman finish the job in Wyoming – beating Liz Cheney and then winning the general e******n.

****** With Cheney on the ropes, you can bet the Left's money machine will be cranking up to rescue her.

So conservatives across the nation need to step up like never before to help Harriet finish her fight and win the Battle of Wyoming.

Please join us in supporting Harriet Hageman – and defeating Liz Cheney – today!

APRIL 18, 2022 - By Sarah Longwell, the executive director of Republicans for the Rule of Law, publisher of The Bulwark, and host of the Focus Group podcast.

For many of Trump’s v**ers, the belief that the e******n was s****n is not a fully formed thought. It’s more of an attitude, or a tribal pose.

Some 35 percent of Americans—including 68 percent of Republicans—believe the Big Lie, pushed relentlessly by former President Donald Trump and amplified by conservative media, that the 2020 p**********l e******n was s****n. They think that Trump was the true victor and that he should still be in the White House today.

I regularly host focus groups to better understand how v**ers are thinking about key political topics. Recently, I decided to find out why Trump 2020 v**ers hold so strongly to the Big Lie.

For many of Trump’s v**ers, the belief that the e******n was s****n is not a fully formed thought. It’s more of an attitude, or a tribal pose. They know something nefarious occurred but can’t easily explain how or why. What’s more, they’re mystified and sometimes angry that other people don’t feel the same.

As a woman from Wisconsin told me, “I can’t really put my finger on it, but something just doesn’t feel right.” A man from Pennsylvania said, “Something about it just didn’t seem right.” A man from Arizona said, “It didn’t smell right.”

The exact details of the story vary—was it Hugo Chávez who s***e the e******n? Or the CIA? Or Italian defense contractors? Outlandish claims like these seem to have made this conspiracy theory more durable, not less. Regardless of plausibility, the more questions that are raised, the more mistrustful Trump v**ers are of the official results.

Perhaps that’s because the Big Lie has been part of their background noise for years.

Remember that Trump began spreading the notion that America’s e******ns were “r****d” in 2016—when he thought he would lose. Many Republicans firmly believed that the Democrats would steal an e******n if given the chance. When the 2020 e******n came and Trump did lose, his v**ers were ready to doubt the outcome.

Some Trump v**ers looked at the numbers and couldn’t make sense of them. How could so many more people have v**ed in 2020 than in 2016? A man from North Carolina, when asked why he thought the e******n was s****n, said, “There was 10 million more v**es for Trump in this last e******n than he got in 2016. You’re telling me that Biden got that many?”

To the extent that Big Lie believers try to explain their skepticism over millions more people v****g for Biden than for Trump, they often point to relative crowd sizes at rallies. As the man from North Carolina put it, “I personally went to Trump rallies that were filling stadiums, and then Biden can’t even fill a freaking library. Like, no, it’s not true. I don’t believe it. Don’t buy it.”

Another common refrain is that the v**es “flipped” in the middle of E******n Night. Trump supporters went to bed thinking that their guy had won and then woke up to a different reality—which to them was startling and deeply suspicious. A woman from Georgia told me, “When I went to bed, Trump was so in the lead and then [I got] up and he’s not in the lead. I mean, that’s crazy.”

Long before E******n Day, the media had warned about a “red mirage” and alerted Americans to the possibility that Trump would have a large lead on E******n Night only to have it dissipate as mail-in b****ts were counted. But if you were watching Fox News, you probably didn’t hear any of this. Instead, Trump, MAGA-friendly politicians, and conservative media outlets were priming v**ers to see a conspiracy.

Trump correctly assumed that the majority of the mail-in b****ts that would be counted late at night would go to Biden. So he cast mail-in b****ts as fraudulent almost by definition. The woman from Georgia told me that mail-in b****ts were “a crock,” without elaborating further.

Attempts to set the record straight tend to backfire. When you tell Trump v**ers that the e******n wasn’t stolen, some of them tally that as evidence that it was stolen. A woman from Arizona told me, “I think what convinced me more that the e******n was fixed was how vehemently they have said it wasn’t.”

These v**ers aren’t bad or unintelligent people. The problem is that the Big Lie is embedded in their daily life. They hear from Trump-aligned politicians, their like-minded peers, and MAGA-friendly media outlets—and from these sources they hear the same false claims repeated ad infinitum.

Now we are at the point where to be a Republican means to believe the Big Lie. And as long as Republicans leading the party keep promoting and indulging the Big Lie, that will continue to be the case. If I’ve learned anything from my focus groups, it’s that something doesn’t have to make sense for v**ers to believe it’s true.

Imagine you are accused of a crime by a prosecutor. A grand jury is impaneled consisting of members who have already prounced you guilty before the hearing. You are indicted but are not found guilty at the trial. Later you are accused of another crime and the same grand jury as before is impaneled. Again they have pronounced you guilty before the hearing so you are again indicted. Once again you are not found guilty at trial. Not satisfied the prosecutor skips the grand jury and sets up a committee to investigate you for the offense of which you have already been found not guilty. The committee consist of only those who have already said you were guilty. At committee hearings only evidence and testimony is allowed that is favorable to the prosecution. Cross examination of witnesses is not allowed. The defense can present no case for you. The committee members who have already said you are guilty invite you to appear, but you know you will not be treated fairly and you know the verdict is already in. The committee has already decided it will issue a report accusing you of things that are designed to do nothing but stop you from being an obstacle to their agenda they want to force on others. If this happened to you there is not a person who would not scream how unfair and unconstitutional a process like this is. Yet, there are those who are perfectly fine with the Democrats behaving this way as long as it is used against someone they h**e and a political enemy even if it is a real threat to our Republic.
