Salt and light
May 1, 2023

There is no question we are living in a dark and dying world. Watch the news. Read about what’s happening. Look around. It’s easy to get discouraged. But if you have the light of Christ within you, you are part of a nation of priests, a holy nation, set apart to show the blessings of being called out of this darkness into the marvelous light of Christ. It’s not just a cliché. This is real life. Christ told us in Matthew 5:13 that we are “the salt of the earth.” And in Matthew 5:14 that we “are the light of the world.” Salt and light. If you are a Christ follower, you are equipped with two powerful responses to this dark and dying world—salt, which seasons and preserves; and light which illuminates and gives hope. You have it in you.

The disciples of Christ also lived in a very dark time. Their lives were threatened nearly every day for what they believed. The Roman Empire was a harsh master. There was life and death persecution. While believers in Islamic countries may suffer similar persecution, the persecution we face in Western nations is one of encroaching oppression against our beliefs. We are labeled bigots, h**emongers, all types of “phobes,” for simply believing the Bible is true. The minions of darkness take great offense that the Bible does not validate or accept their corrupted ways. They seek to minimize and oppress those who disagree. This type of persecution becomes increasingly aggressive. I am reminded of the story of Gideon. The children of Israel having done evil in the sight of the Lord, He sent the Midianites to chasten them.

After their land was destroyed and the people impoverished, the Lord heard their prayers and Gideon was chosen to deliver Israel from the Midianites. An angel of the Lord told Gideon in Judges 6:12, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor.” Gideon destroyed the altar of Baal, which angered the Midianites, the Amalekites and their allies, which gathered against Israel. Gideon rallied the tribes of Israel to prepare for battle. But God would let him take only 300 men to destroy the Midianites. Gideon gave them trumpets and lamps. On signal, they would blow the trumpets and light the lamps, making the Midianites think there were far more Israelites than there were. The Midianites and their allies ran, and the tribes of Israel overtook and destroyed them in their fear. Herein is the lesson: Gideon was salt and light.

The salt was the destruction of the idol of Baal, surrounding the Midianite camp, standing for righteousness in word and deed. The light was the lamps that shown brightly against the darkness striking fear in the evil Midianites. You see, we are also salt and light, as Christ said. But if the salt loses its savor, it is no good. And one doesn’t hide his light otherwise darkness prevails. As encouraged in Romans 13:12, “The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.” Don’t be entangled with the works of darkness, but be salt by standing and light in Christ, knowing all the while the promise of Christ in Matthew 28:20, “I am with you always.” And that we are “more than conquerors” through Christ. Be salt and light, bring accountability and hope. The Lord is with you.

Have a Blessed and Powerful Day!

Verse of the Day
for Sunday, April 30th, 2023

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. -- Philippians 4:19

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Paul gives the Philippians this promise only after he has emphasized to them that he had found the Lord's grace sufficient in good times and tough times, in times of plenty and in times of extreme lack. The key to this promise is God's provision and our trust in him to satisfy what we most need in Christ Jesus. When our hearts yearn to be full of the Lord, to be pleasing to him, to be blessed by his presence, to be given the assurance of life beyond death, surely we can rely on God supplying everything we truly need!

My Prayer...
Give me eyes to see, O God, all the many wonderful ways you provide for me and graciously provide the abundance you have poured into my life. I confess that my vision is shortsighted and narrow. I need to see the panoramic view of your graciousness. Yet the "little part" my feeble mind can recognize as your blessing is lavish, gracious, and fulfilling. You have blessed me with many more things I do not see, so please use the Holy Spirit to help me trust that you are providing things I cannot see. Thank you for being so generous! In Jesus' name! Amen.

Verse of the Day
for Saturday, April 29th, 2023

Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: Forget not the humble. -- Psalm 10:12

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
We are part of a profoundly broken world filled with wounded people. On days when a person around us — or the person inside us — suffers pain and unbearable anguish, we can easily be frustrated by our inability to change the circumstances or mitigate the suffering. We realize we have no power to help or bring lasting relief. However, as believers, we can seek the help of God! The LORD, the covenant God of Israel, who kept his promises, preserved his people, and produced his Messiah in the past, is the God who stands by us and those for whom we intercede today. Sure, there are moments when God seems not to be watching, listening, or intervening to provide care or deliverance. So, do we "keep a stiff upper lip," "suck it up and try harder," pretending we don't have fear, doubts, and anger? No! We honestly cry out to our LORD. He has redeemed, saved, intervened, and delivered his people in the past. We call on our LORD God, the same God, to do his work for us and those we love in our day. We pray: "Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless."

My Prayer...
God of hope, do not be far from us in our dark and menacing days. Please restore the joy of life and the hope for good things. Please give us comfort in our times of pain and anguish. Lift up your hand and act to bring repentance and renewal to our time, families, culture, congregations, and us. Out of your grace and mercy, please bring your healing and deliverance. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

for Friday, April 28th, 2023

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. -- James 1:27

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Yesterday James reminded us how important our "talk" is. Today he reminds us about the importance of our "walk": we are called to talk and walk honorably before God! True religion is not all talk. We must live and love as Jesus Christ did. God has always called his people to care for the widow and the fatherless, and he challenges us to offer genuine help to others who are forgotten, overlooked, and find themselves outsiders Deuteronomy 15:1-18). As Jesus' followers, we must care for others while keeping ourselves holy to God. James, the half-brother of Jesus, wants us to know that this is what "Christyle-living" is all about!

My Prayer...
Loving God, give me eyes to see the people that need your blessing. Please lead me to the folks in our church and the people in my neighborhood, work, and school who feel forgotten and overlooked. Help me not only to see them but also include them so they can know your love for them! In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

The “Abort God” movement
April 27, 2023

The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, makes it a federal crime to use force with the intent to injure, intimidate, and interfere with anyone because that person is a provider of “reproductive health care.” The Biden Administration sent the FBI in full SWAT gear to arrest Catholic activist Mark Houck, pointing guns at him, his wife and children. In January, a jury found Houck not guilty and acquitted him. This an example of the clash between a powerful federal government at odds with religious doctrine. A pro-a******n activist accosted Houck’s son while he was praying outside an a******n clinic. The FBI, however, is not so concerned when pro-lifers are attacked, as is the case in Ohio.

In Bowling Green, Ohio on April 15, a pro-life pregnancy center was vandalized by the radical group called “Jane’s Revenge,” whose members spray painted on the clinic “Abort God,” among other pro-death slogans. Jane’s Revenge is a militant extremist group that encourages and claims responsibility for vandalizing and firebombing crisis pregnancy centers and churches. Since the Supreme Court decision overturning the federal “right” to an a******n, Jane’s Revenge has been allegedly responsibility for attacking some 20 crisis pregnancy centers and pro-life offices. In June 2022, Kyle Shideler, a senior analyst for Homeland Security and Terrorism at the Center for Security Policy told the Catholic News Agency that there was a “very poor” federal response and such groups were treated as a local law enforcement problem.

Ohio Right to Life’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Range said in a statement, “In the broader context, though, there have been well over 100 attacks against pro-life pregnancy centers and pro-life organizations since last year. Everyone in this state and nation, no matter their political affiliation or stance on a******n, should support centers and organizations that help mothers. I pray local officials, statewide elected members, and national leaders will all rise to the moment and speak out against these attacks to put an end to these senseless attacks once and for all.” Let’s take an inventory: The FBI makes a big show about arresting somebody who is praying outside an a******n clinic, but leaves firebombing a pro-life crisis pregnancy center to local police. In Bowling Green, the local police say they are “investigating” the incident.

As in Isaiah 59:14, “Justice is turned back, And righteousness stands afar off; For t***h is fallen in the street, And equity cannot enter.” “Abort God,” really? It is very hard to imagine that the FBI, with all of its high-tech tracking ability, cannot find these Jane’s Revenge terrorists. There have been a lot of examples lately where the Biden Administration and the FBI, in particular, have been using their power to crack down on those who disagree with them politically. In many cases now, and in the future, the clash between religious beliefs and political ideology will become even more harsh. Being pro-life, also meaning God-fearing, is becoming more and more dangerous in this “one nation under God,” especially among those who wish to “abort God.”

Have a Blessed and Powerful day!

Verse of the Day
for Thursday, April 27th, 2023

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. -- James 1:26

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
"It's no big deal!" That's the whine of a believer rationalizing vulgar, inappropriate, or hurtful speech. However, a friend confessed to me a long time ago, "Our moral plunge in the office began when we let our language slip. It didn't seem like that big a deal at the time, but it led to disastrous consequences!" Religion that is not reflected in everyday speech is empty and hollow. So let's use our speech to bless and encourage, not to curse, slander, or gossip.

My Prayer...
Holy and incomparable God, please forgive me for not using my speech redemptively. Forgive me for the times I've used my words to wound another or in ways that dishonor you and your holy claim on my life. Use my words today to bless, encourage, and comfort so others may know your grace through me. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Verse of the Day
for Wednesday, April 26th, 2023

Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: The poor committeth himself unto thee; Thou art the helper of the fatherless.
-- Psalm 10:14

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
Just as God saw the plight of the Israelites in Egypt and heard their cries, and came down to help them, he still sees and hears our cries today. But now, he not only hears because he is omnipotent; he hears because of the Son, Jesus, at his right hand, interceding for us. Jesus has been where we are. He faced the specter of death, the pain of torture, and the separation of ridicule. Jesus' presence with the Father means that God not only hears our cries for help; he also feels our agony. This is why Jesus came. He is our assurance that God feels, cares, acts, and ultimately saves. Our God sees our trouble and grief and then helps even the most vulnerable and helpless.

My Prayer...
God, Father, and Savior, please be with those bearing the incredible weight of agony and pain. Some of these I know and pray for personally. Others I do not know, but they still need your comfort, strength, and grace to sustain them in their days of agony and grief. Please bless them with clear evidence of your care. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

But godliness with contentment is great gain. -- 1 Timothy 6:6

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
What determines our financial worth? Do we compute it in terms of dollars, possessions, real estate, or investments? Paul reminded Timothy that ultimate gain, the gain of incalculable value, is really determined by a straightforward formula: genuine net worth = (godly character) X (contentment). What would happen if we realized that the truly wealthy were those with godly character who found contentment in Jesus regardless of their circumstances?

My Prayer...
O LORD God, the one from whom every blessing flows, readjust my values from the greed of this world to a holy set of financial convictions — true gain is found in godly character and genuine contentment. Conform my character to the godliness that Jesus demonstrated in his daily life. Teach me the contentment that can only be found in you. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Verse of the Day
for Saturday, April 22nd, 2023

God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea -- Psalm 46:1-2

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
God promised to be our refuge and strength. Our challenge is to trust that we are not alone or abandoned when emotional earthquakes, disasters, and tidal waves overwhelm our lives. God is not only our protector and helper. He is with us even when our world seems to be crashing around us. He will rescue us from death or deliver us through death to himself. He will deliver us from evil or empower us to overcome evil. We do not have to fear wh**ever may come because God is our refuge and strength!

My Prayer...
Holy God, I pray for those who are in the middle of life's earthquakes today. You know those for whom I am concerned. You know I care about their struggles which are too big for me to mitigate and too painful for me to truly bring comfort. I ask you to bless and be with them now and deliver them quickly. You are our only true hope, and Jesus is our only sure redeemer. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Verse of the Day
for Friday, April 21st, 2023

As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.
-- Galatians 6:10

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
We are to be people who do good deeds! When God gives us the opportunity, let's take it and do good to others! Unlike those captured by the desires of this world — those looking to get ahead, to get even with someone, or to get out of difficult situations — let's look for opportunities to do good! And, the good we do shouldn't be confined to other believers. Let's do good to all people and share God's loving kindness with other believers!

My Prayer...
Only you are truly good and perfect in all your ways, dear Father. However, I pray that your goodness may be seen in your Church and also in me as we serve you today, this week, and until the time the Savior returns for us in glory. Please help us be aware of and look for the opportunities you give us to do good to and for others. In Jesus' mighty name, I pray. Amen.

Verse of the Day
for Thursday, April 20th, 2023

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; And his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall praise thy works to another, And shall declare thy mighty acts. -- Psalm 145:3-4

Thoughts on Today's Verse...
What we know about God is confined to our tiny brains, our limited experiences, our willingness to read about the great deeds of God in Scripture, and our hearing of his incredible work through the lives of older Christians. There is nothing quite like listening to a more senior, grace-filled brother or sister in Christ who knows our Lord and has experienced his power through worship, obedience, mission, and experience. Let's commit to sharing our faith and experience with Jesus with future generations!

My Prayer...
God Almighty, by your grace, I call you Abba Father using the word for Father that expresses the intimacy and dependency of a small child. However, your majesty is beyond my ability to comprehend, and your power is beyond my capabilities to grasp. What I do know, dear Father, and what I do understand of you, Almighty God, brings me to my knees in humble adoration and reverent appreciation. Thank you for your love, mercy, and grace that make your majesty approachable and my mortality redeemable. In Jesus' name. Amen.
