I just heard a man, a guest on Glenn Beck, ask the rabbi and a protestant that question. He thought that it is something that our government is trying to destroy through secularization. I have to agree with the man, wholly. They are getting their fingers in the whole marriage thing in order to secularize one more part of Christian belief. Are we wrong?
Don't know who you mean by "we", but marriage is a social institution also, not only a religious one. I never got married in a religious ceremony, yet I am happily married. And since marriage is a cornerstone of our society, I would think that religious folks would be happy that marriage is a rite of passage for everyone.
