I was around 13 or so and my friend, Don and I rode our bikes to a nearby town (Enfield, NH) and lake. On the return trip to Lebanon we decided to avoid going up a long hill and take the railroad tracks. The tracks curved around the hill and crossed a running river on a bridge. We couldn’t see the tracks around the curve and the sound of the river over the rocks blocked any sound of an approaching train.
We pushed our bikes across the bridge, stopping along the way to look over the side at the water rushing below. I wondered if the water was deep enough to jump in if the train came around the bend. If not, was there enough room to cling to the side of the bridge without getting hit by a train? I even put my ear to the track wondering if I could hear an approaching train. We probably lingered on the bridge for 5 or 10 minutes. Then out of nowhere my whole being was overcome with the sense that danger was near. I yelled to Don that we needed to get off the bridge NOW. I said ride, don’t push your bike. We made it off the bridge and went off to the side of the tracks when seconds later the train came full speed around the bend.
What was it that warned me to get off that bridge? I can only attribute it to the Holy Spirit or perhaps my Guardian Angel. But even if I had remained on the bridge I wouldn’t have had time to jump in the river or cling to the side.

I did something similar when I was in first grade. A friend and I didn't go home after school and would hide when we saw a police car in the area.

The Dash

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on their tombstone from the beginning…to the end.
He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time that they spent alive on earth. And now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.
So, think about this long and hard. Are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged.
And be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile, remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read, with your life’s actions to rehash…would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?

If you see a car parked in a designated place and it has no handicap placard call the PD on their non-emergency line and give the the license plate number, assuming you expect it will be there when the PD arrive.
Another thing that irks me is when the handicapped person doesn't leave the vehicle while someone else runs a quick errand, yet they are parked in the designated spot. I can overlook this if there are numerous empty handicap places, but if it is the only one, no way. the able bodied person could probably use the exercise.
