Kessler Syndrome and the space debris problem
By Mike Wall last updated July 14, 2022
This feared space-junk cascade called Kessler Syndrome may have already begun.

The Kessler Syndrome is a phenomenon in which the amount of junk in orbit around Earth reaches a point where it just creates more and more space debris, causing big problems for satellites, astronauts and mission planners.

Consider this scenario: The destruction of a dead spy satellite spawns a swarm of debris in Earth orbit, which wreaks ever-increasing havoc as it zooms around our planet.

The cloud destroys a number of communications satellites, generating more and more debris with every violent collision. It takes out the iconic Hubble Space Telescope and a NASA space shuttle, k*****g several crewmembers aboard the winged vehicle. It then lines the International Space Station (ISS) up in its crosshairs, destroying the $100 billion orbiting lab with a hail of fast-flying shrapnel.

This dramatic scene is fictional, of course; it's pulled from the award-winning 2013 sci-fi film "Gravity." But many satellite operators, mission planners and exploration advocates worry that it could be a dark window into a future that's all too real, thanks to the Kessler Syndrome.

Read on to learn more about this feared phenomenon, which describes a snowballing cascade of space junk.

KESSLER SYNDROME: A SPACE-JUNK VISIONARY'S PREDICTION
The Kessler Syndrome is named after former NASA scientist Donald Kessler, who laid out the basic idea in a seminal 1978 paper.

In that study, titled "Collision Frequency of Artificial Satellites: The Creation of a Debris Belt," Kessler and co-author Burton Cour-Palais noted that the likelihood of satellite collisions increases as more and more spacecraft are lofted to orbit. And each such smashup would have an outsized impact on the orbital environment.

"Satellite collisions would produce orbiting fragments, each of which would increase the probability of further collisions, leading to the growth of a belt of debris around the Earth," the duo wrote. "The debris flux in such an Earth-orbiting belt could exceed the natural meteoroid flux, affecting future spacecraft designs."

The Kessler Syndrome describes, and warns of, a cascade of orbital debris that could potentially hinder humanity's space ambitions and activities down the road. The original paper predicted that satellite collisions would become a source of space junk by the year 2000, if not sooner, unless humanity changed how it lofted payloads to orbit. But a timeline is not essential to the core idea.

"It was never intended to mean that the cascading would occur over a period of time as short as days or months. Nor was it a prediction that the current environment was above some critical threshold," Kessler wrote in a 2009 paper that clarified the definition of the Kessler Syndrome and discussed its implications.

"The 'Kessler Syndrome' was meant to describe the phenomenon that random collisions between objects large enough to catalogue would produce a hazard to spacecraft from small debris that is greater than the natural meteoroid environment," he added. "In addition, because the random collision frequency is non-linear with debris accumulation rates, the phenomenon will eventually become the most important long-term source of debris, unless the accumulation rate of larger, non-operational objects (e.g., non-operational payloads and upper-stage rocket bodies) in Earth orbit were significantly reduced."

And Kessler didn't name this scenario after himself. In that 2009 paper, he explained that "Kessler Syndrome" apparently originated with John Gabbard, a scientist with the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) who kept an unofficial record of big satellite breakups in orbit.

Gabbard used the term when talking to a reporter shortly after the 1978 study came out. The Kessler Syndrome then worked its way into the public consciousness, "becoming part of the storyline in some science fiction, and a three-word summary describing orbital debris issues," Kessler wrote in the 2009 paper.

To give you another idea of how influential the 1978 study was: A year later, NASA established the Orbital Debris Program Office at Johnson Space Center in Houston and made Kessler its head. (Kessler, who was born in 1940, retired from NASA in 1996 with the title of senior scientist for orbital debris research. But he remains active in the debris research community today.)

KESSLER SYNDROME TIPPING POINT: HOW BAD ARE THINGS NOW?
Earth orbit is getting more and more crowded as the years go by.

Humanity has launched about 12,170 satellites since the dawn of the space age in 1957, according to the European Space Agency (ESA), and 7,630 of them remain in orbit today — but only about 4,700 are still operational.

That means there are nearly 3,000 defunct spacecraft zooming around Earth at tremendous speeds, along with other big, dangerous pieces of debris like upper-stage rocket bodies. For example, orbital velocity at 250 miles (400 kilometers) up, the altitude at which the ISS flies, is about 17,100 mph (27,500 kph).

At such speeds, even a tiny shard of debris can do serious damage to a spacecraft — and there are huge numbers of such fragmentary bullets zipping around our planet. ESA estimates that Earth orbit harbors at least 36,500 debris objects that are more than 4 inches (10 centimeters) wide, 1 million between 0.4 inches and 4 inches (1 to 10 cm) across, and a staggering 330 million that are smaller than 0.4 inches (1 cm) but bigger than 0.04 inches (1 millimeter).

These objects pose more than just a hypothetical threat. From 1999 to May 2021, for example, the ISS conducted 29 debris-avoiding maneuvers, including three in 2020 alone, according to NASA officials. And that number continues to grow; the station performed another such move in November 2021, for example.

Many of the smaller pieces of space junk were spawned by the explosion of spent rocket bodies in orbit, but others were more actively emplaced. In January 2007, for instance, China intentionally destroyed one of its defunct weather satellites in a much-criticized test of anti-satellite technology that generated more than 3,000 tracked debris objects and perhaps 32,000 others too small to be detected. The vast majority of that junk remains in orbit today, experts say.

Spacecraft have also collided with each other on orbit. The most famous such incident occurred in February 2009, when Russia's defunct Kosmos 2251 satellite slammed into the operational communications craft Iridium 33, producing nearly 2,000 pieces of debris bigger than a softball.

That 2009 smashup might be evidence that the Kessler Syndrome is already upon us, though a cataclysm of "Gravity" proportions is still a long way off.

"The cascade process can be more accurately thought of as continuous and as already started, where each collision or explosion in orbit slowly results in an increase in the frequency of future collisions," Kessler told Space Safety Magazine in 2012.

The space community is taking the orbital-debris threat increasingly seriously these days, and not just because of the jolts provided by the Chinese ASAT test and the Iridium-Kosmos crash. Multiple satellite "megaconstellations" are in the works, making space traffic management and space-junk mitigation more pressing issues than they've ever been. (Such networks could also t***sform the night sky for professional and amateur astronomers, a separate but also important issue.)

For instance, SpaceX has already launched more than 1,700 satellites for its Starlink broadband constellation, which could eventually consist of more than 40,000 craft. OneWeb has lofted more than half of the satellites for its planned 648-member constellation, which may also grow beyond that initial number as time goes on.

Amazon aims to assemble its own internet-satellite network, which will consist of more than 3,200 spacecraft. And in November 2021, Bay Area launch startup Astra filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission for its own 13,600-satellite broadband constellation.

In addition, launch and satellite construction costs continue to fall, allowing more and more people to get satellites up and operate them — including folks with very little experience in the field. This opening of the final frontier is generally a good thing, most experts say, but it further highlights the need for forethought and responsible action when it comes to satellite operation.

In 2019, for example, the Space Safety Coalition (SSC) laid out a set of proposed voluntary guidelines designed to keep the Kessler Syndrome, and space junk in general, at bay over the coming years.

One recommendation is that all satellites operating above 250 miles (400 km) be equipped with propulsion systems allowing them to maneuver away from possible collisions. Drawing the line there makes sense for multiple reasons, according to the SSC: It's the altitude at which the ISS flies, and satellites that circle below this boundary tend to encounter enough atmospheric d**g to fall out of orbit relatively soon after their operational lives come to an end.

The SSC also recommends that satellite designers consider building encryption systems into the command systems of their craft, so they'll be harder for chaos-seeking hackers to hijack. And operators who control satellites in low Earth orbit should include in their launch contracts a requirement that rocket upper stages be disposed of in the atmosphere shortly after liftoff.

More active debris-fighting strategies could also be part of the solution. Removing just a handful of rocket bodies or big, dead satellites every year could help us keep our space-junk problem under control, according to some studies. And researchers around the world are developing and testing ways to do just that, using nets, harpoons and other methods.

Such activities would have to be carefully coordinated and thought out. Space objects, including junk such as spent rocket bodies, belong to the nation that launched them, so the U.S. government or a U.S. company couldn't just unilaterally de-orbit a bunch of spent Russian rocket bodies (or vice versa). Such action might spark an international incident, not least because debris-removing tech might also be viewed as a potential space weapon that could take out operational satellites.

But the space-junk issue is a global one, so governments around the world should already be having meaty conversations about how to deal with it. Let's hope the talks, the decisions and the tech end up outpacing the problem, for all of our sakes.

Florida teacher, Disney employees among 219 arrested in human trafficking operation: authorities
Of those arrested, 21 were victims of human trafficking, sheriff says

A Polk County, Florida, human trafficking operation earlier this month led to the arrests of 219 people, including people in the country illegally, a high school teacher, and three Disney employees, according to authorities.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd on Thursday announced the results of the operation, saying out of 119 prostitutes who were arrested during the operation that began last week, 21 were possible victims of human trafficking.

Two suspects were charged with human trafficking, and both were in the U.S. illegally.

Freddy Escalona, 30, and Maria Guzman, 36, were charged with human trafficking and deriving proceeds from prostitution.

Escalona, police said, lent money to a victim to fix her vehicle, and after she was unable to pay him back, he allegedly forced her into prostitution.

When Escalona drove the victim to the undercover location, he was taken into custody and told detectives he had "several females that he worked," or who paid him to t***sport them and keep them safe, Judd said.

Guzman also allegedly trafficked two victims from a hotel in Orlando, setting up their "dates" and profiting from the money they made.

Judd’s office said 83 suspects were arrested for soliciting prostitution; 17 other suspects were arrested, and of those, five either derived proceeds from prostitution or aiding and abetting prostitutes, and eight drove the prostitutes to the undercover location.

Investigators charged a total of 44 felonies and 242 misdemeanors during the operation.

"Not only did we arrest more suspects during this single operation than we have ever arrested before, we identified 21 human trafficking victims; during a similar operation in February, we identified 24 victims," Judd said. "That’s 45 victims we were able to identify this year. The valuable relationships that we have with the social services organizations who join us in these operations make it possible for these women to get help and be emancipated from this way of life."

Of those arrested, 35 are suspected to be in the country illegally, and are from the countries of Cuba, Chile, Venezuela, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia or the Bahamas.

Forty-one of the suspects confessed to detectives they were married; 13 said they received government assistance, 42 brought illegal drugs to the undercover location; two had firearms on them; 18 were from other states; the oldest person arrested was 76-year-old Frank Bydairk; and the youngest was 18-year-old Latrice Vilsaint.

While talking to reporters Thursday, Judd said one man who was arrested left his 1-year-old daughter at home alone while he went to have sex in Polk County. While talking with deputies, Judd said, the man said he did not leave his child at home alone because the dog was watching her.

Russell Rogers of Winter Haven was also arrested during the operation. Judd said Rogers is an athletic director at Vanguard School and a teacher at Auburndale High School REAL Academy.

According to Judd, Rogers is married with three children.

"This dude now is coaching in the county jail," Judd said. "I can’t believe we want somebody like this around our children."

FOX 13 Tampa Bay reported that Polk County Schools said they were disappointed to learn one of their employees engaged in that type of behavior.

"Part of being an educator is understanding that you are held to a higher standard for your actions in the classroom, as well as the community," district officials said. "These charges don’t involve students, and Rogers was not on duty as a teacher, but this kind of conduct still has no place in our school system."

Rogers, according to the district, was hired in April 2013, and worked for Real Academy since 2017. Polk County Public Schools told the station it is moving forward with the process of terminating Rogers’ employment with the district.

The sheriff’s office said three suspects were Disney employees, and another worked at a Disney hotel.

"This guy has marshmallows for brains," Judd said while talking of a man who saw police and watched a man and woman enter the room. When the two did not come out, Judd added, the man went inside because he thought it was his turn.

Helping with the seven-day operation were detectives from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, as well as police departments in Auburndale, Bartow, Davenport, Lakeland, Lake Hamilton, Lake Wales, Winter Haven and Zephyrhills.

Several other agencies assisted, including the Florida Department of Children and Families and social services organizations like One More Child.

This week, Biden’s dog bit another secret service agent. We all remember that “Major” bit people before. So, again -in the White House? Well, actually no. Biden gave that dog away in 2021.

This is a NEW dog - a dog named “Commander” - that was born in 2021. This is the Eleventh biting incident that we KNOW of from this young dog. In the four month period from October 2022 to January 2023, there were TEN biting “incidents” - sending one person to the hospital. They went to the hospital, AFTER medical treatment was performed at the White House. We only know this because Judicial Watch did a FOIA for that time period to discover if bites had occurred. These bites were from a one year old dog.

It is probably safe to assume that if there were TEN incidents in that four month period, there are other bites that we don’t know about.

THIS IS THE BIDEN’S SECOND DOG THAT WE KNOW OF THAT HAS TURNED EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE.

This is not normal.

Dogs that bite without warning is usually because fear aggression.

Unlike most other types of dog aggression, fear aggression in dogs has no warning signs. Because they will react only when they think that there is no other option but to defend themselves, these dogs won’t growl, bare their teeth, or snarl before they nip at their source of fear. In most cases, this behavior is caused by a trauma in the dog’s past.

Fear aggression is often caused by abuse (for instance, a dog getting physically punished or mistreated).

The fact that this is at least the SECOND dog that has developed aggression is not a good look for the Biden family.

No one should have to work in an environment where there is a large, aggressive dog that is biting lots of people so hard that it is sending people to the hospital.

In a normal situation (err.. that means you or I or anyone else), a police report would have been filed about an aggressive dog that drew blood long ago -particularly if someone ended up in the hospital. There would have been a hearing or a court case. A county official or judge would order such a dog euthanized as soon as a history of multiple bites was documented.

Heck, such a story would have made the local newspapers. Ten dog bites in a four month period!

What is wrong with these people? Responsible pet owners do not allow their dogs to bite at least eleven people! Seriously - I hope a p**********l nominee takes this up as campaign issue.

Michigan Legislators File Federal Lawsuit – Claim State Usurped Their Constitutional Authority
Posted on Thursday, September 28, 2023
|
by Outside Contributor

F**g of Michigan state
Lawmakers say state e******n officials violated legislature’s right to determine times, places, and manner of e******ns as protected in both the U.S Constitution and the Michigan Constitution.

September 28, 2023. Lansing, Michigan. Today, eleven Michigan state legislators filed a lawsuit in federal court against state e******n officials. The lawsuit claims the 2018 and 2022 state constitutional amendments regulating the times, places, and manner of federal e******ns are legally null and void. The U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 4 (the E******ns Clause), requires the state legislature to regulate the times, places, and manner of federal e******ns. However, Michigan’s constitutional amendments (Proposal 3 of 2018 and Proposal 2 of 2022) bypassed the state legislature and, in doing so, usurped the legislature’s federally-mandated constitutional authority. These state constitutional amendments included provisions that allow v**ers to sign affidavits instead of presenting valid identification when v****g in person or applying for an absentee b****t; nine days of early v****g; private funding of e******n administration; no-excuse absentee v****g procedures; same-day v***r r**********ns; state-funded absentee b****t drop boxes, and independent redistricting commissions. The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Western District of Michigan, names as defendants Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Jonathan Brater, Director of the Bureau of E******ns.

In a press conference webinar conducted today, state Senator Jonathan Lindsey, one of the legislator plaintiffs, said, “The United States Constitution, the supreme law of the land, contains limited, but critical, e******n regulations. We also have procedures in place at the state level to amend e******n law. However, these processes were violated in 2018 and 2022 when an alternative amendment process was used without regard to federal constitutional requirements. This lawsuit challenges recent attempts to subvert our constitutional process and will protect against such actions in the future.”

Lindsey said progressives had tried and failed for years to pressure elected representatives to tear down safeguards that kept the state’s e******ns convenient and secure. “As an end-around, they used an unconstitutional process, then deceived the public into v****g for changes that weaken our e******ns,” he said. “I don’t blame v**ers. They were told lies that made Proposal 2 sound good. Proponents ran ads saying this “enshrines v**er ID into our Constitution” when in fact Prop 2 guarantees the right to v**e WITHOUT v**er ID—a classic bait and switch tactic. A lot of money was spent to deceive people. Now these unlawfully enacted changes purport to limit our power as legislators to fix serious issues with our e******ns. Today I stand with fellow legislators to challenge that notion.”

Representative Steve Carra, a plaintiff and Chair of the Michigan House Freedom Caucus agreed. “The founders of this great republic put regulating e******ns into the hands of the state legislatures, so changes to the e******n process will undergo a deliberative and thoughtful process by the people’s elected representatives.”

“Michigan state e******n officials committed horrible violations of state legislators’ federal rights in 2018 and 2022, and continue to do so,” said Erick Kaardal, attorney with Mohrman, Kaardal & Erickson, P.A., representing the plaintiffs. “The e******n officials enabled these legally unauthorized amendments to the state constitution to eviscerate the state legislators’ federal rights to participate in law-making to determine the times, places, and manner of federal e******ns. Now, the Michigan Constitution contains federal e******ns regulations that are monuments to civil rights violations. We will need help from the federal courts to clean up the mess that the e******n officials created.”

Additional attorneys for the plaintiffs include Lansing-based David Kallman and Steve Kallman of the Kallman Legal Group, PLLC.

Carra said, “We’re seeing enormous outstate influence on our state’s e******ns. The far left struggles to win in a f**r e******n, so their national strategy is to corrupt swing-state e******ns. One of their tactics is to trick the public into v****g for unconstitutional changes to a state’s constitution, taking the legislature out of the e******n process.”

Carra explained that of the total $31.7 million spent on the Proposal 2 campaign, $23.6 million, 74%, was expended in support. About half of that, $11.3 million, poured into Promote the V**e from the Sixteen Thirty Fund, a 501(c)4 nonprofit based in Washington D.C. The George Soros Open Society Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit based in New York, accounted for $1.2 million.

“Despite the inflamed rhetoric coming from extremists, Michigan residents want fair and secure e******ns.” Carra declared. He cited a recent Honest E******ns Project (HEP) study that shows public support for photo ID laws has grown to an astounding 88% nationwide with 68% strongly agreeing that photo ID should be required when v****g. “Promote the V**e behaved like snake-oil salesmen to deceive Michiganders into amending the state constitution. They claimed it enshrined v**er ID when the t***h is the Proposal 2 amendment did just the opposite. It allows registrants to v**e without valid identification.”

Carra noted, “The HEP study found that 86% of Americans think every e******n office should routinely undergo a full performance review and audit. “Prop 2 allows for nine days OR MORE of early v****g, which is fiscally irresponsible and makes our e******ns ripe for fraud. We need to fix the problem now and restore legislative authority. Otherwise, the situation will continue to get worse.”

The legislature has the authority to propose an amendment to the Constitution involving a v**e of the people under Article 12, Sec. 1. But any e******n-law amendment to the Constitution that bypasses the legislature is illegal. According to both the U.S. Constitution and the Michigan Constitution, only the state legislature has the authority to regulate the times, places, and manner of federal e******ns. The passage of an e******n-related b****t referendum without first gaining legislative approval violates both the U.S. and Michigan Constitutions. The Michigan Constitution provides that the legislative power to regulate e******ns is vested in the senate and house of representatives.

The lawsuit warns that the unconstitutional process could be misused in 2024 and in the future.

“The courts need to decide these important legal questions,” Senator Lindsey explained. “The people of Michigan are entitled to an answer on the scope and limitations of Article XII, section 2, amendment by petition, especially as it relates to the responsibilities granted to the state legislatures by the United States Constitution. I am honored to play a role in this effort to restore the rule of law in Michigan.”

Plaintiffs include Senators Jonathan Lindsey and Jim Runestad; Representatives Steve Carra, James DeSana, Joseph Fox, Neil Friske, Matt Maddock, Brad Paquette, Angela Rigas, Joshua Schriver, and Rachelle Smit.

Attorney Erick Kaardal, a partner of Mohrman, Kaardal & Erickson, P.A., specializes in suing the government to improve it. Over the course of his three-decade career, Kaardal has achieved 61 e******n integrity counter-lawfare victories, including two U.S. Supreme Court wins.

Michigan F**r E******ns and the Great Lakes Justice Center, sponsors of the lawsuit, are Michigan-based, non-profit 501(c)3 organizations. MFE is composed of local task forces dedicated to restoring fair and honest e******ns through education, local citizen participation in e******ns, and litigation. GLJC’s mission is to speak t***h on behalf of the persecuted and most vulnerable and to champion the cause of the defenseless and oppressed.
