Well he's succeeded in creating a red hot economy, reducing unemployment to the lowest level in decades, for b****s, hispanics, minorities, and w****s, allowing workers to take more of their paycheck home than in decades, reducing more regulations than has been done in decades, strengthening our military so that we're once again respected throughout the world, and on and on.

PeterS, I guess you think he should expand his base by appropriating some of the left's talking points and adopting some of their platform planks. Let's see, he could talk about the scourge of c*****e c****e and make a campaign promise to eliminate any change in climate. Starting with the elimination of the # 1 offender - the internal combustion engine. So all lefties will know he worships at that altar.
Or he can talk about how he now believes that a woman's health is paramount - and justifies a******n at any stage even after the child is born, aka infanticide. That might expand his base, eh PeterS?
Or he could expand his base by elevating the rights of asylum seekers. Making them sacrosanct. Heck he could adopt Beto's plank and promise to tear down all the walls. I wonder how much that would expand his base.
Feel free, PeterS, to add to the list of campaign promises Trump could make to expand his base. I'm sure you can add suggestions to this starter list.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/right-wing-terrorists-murder-far-right-islamist-anti-defamation-league-adl-a8742476.html

Every terrorist murder in the US last year was linked to right-wing extremism, according to a new report.

At least 50 people were k**led by an attacker connected to right-wing extremism in 2018, an increase of 35 per cent from the previous year, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) found.

The rise means nearly three-quarters of extremist murders in America in the past decade can be linked to right-wing domestic terrorism, more than three times as many as those committed by Islamists.

The figures should “serve as a wake-up call to everyone about the deadly consequences of h**eful rhetoric,” said the ADL, a New York-based organisation with monitors antisemitism and other h**e crime.

“It’s time for our nation’s leaders to appropriately recognise the severity of the threat and to dev**e the necessary resources to address the scourge of right-wing extremism,” said chief executive Jonathan Greenblatt.

According to the ADL's calculation, last year was the deadliest for right-wing extremist murders in the US since 1995, when Timothy McVeigh k**led 168 people in the Oklahoma City bombing.

When all forms of extremism are taken into account, 2018 was the fourth deadliest for domestic terrorism in America since 1970, the ADL said. The rise can partly be attributed to the high casualty numbers in five mass shootings which accounted for 38 of the 50 deaths last year.

However, the percentage of extremist deaths linked to right-wing ideologies has also surged in the past two years. In 2017, 62 per cent of extremist murders were committed by ring-wing k**lers. That figure was itself up from 21 per cent in 2016, according to the ADL, which said the increase reflected a long-term trend.

In the past decade, 73.3 per cent of all extremist-related k*****gs in the US were committed by right-wing domestic extremists. Some 23.4 per cent were linked to Islamic extremism.

Jacob Davey, who co-leads research into the extreme right at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue in London, said the threat of far right violence was growing internationally

He told The Independent: “The global atmosphere, particularly in the US but also throughout Europe and the UK, is becoming more polarised. This is empowering and emboldening right-wing voices and it’s creating an environment which makes it quite easy for individuals and groups to profit off this polarisation and drive division further.

“We are also seeing some really concerted international propaganda efforts to stoke this global atmosphere of fear and hatred.”

Mr Davey said digital communications had “lowered the barrier of entry” for involvement in extremist movements, while Donald Trump’s presidency had also “empowered right-wing activists through dog whistle tactics”.

W***e s*********ts carried out 39 of the extremist k*****gs in America last year, according to ADL, although it noted one of those had become interested in radical Islam before stabbing a 13-year-old to death in Florida in March.

Eleven of those murdered in 2018 were worshippers shot dead at the Tree of Life synagogue on Pittsburgh in October. The suspected shooter, Robert Bowers, 46, allegedly shouted antisemitic abuse as he carried out the attack.

In February, 17 people were k**led in the Parkland school shooting in Florida by Nikolas Cruz, who police said held “extremist” views. Cruz had posted r****t and Islamophobic comments on social media and, according to the ADL also had links to white supremacism.

For the first time, ADL’s annual summary of extremist k*****gs also includes violence allegedly inspired by the so-called “incel” movement, a misogynistic online community in which “involuntarily celibate” men often express anger over their inability to form relationships with women.

In November, two women were shot dead at a Florida yoga studio by Scott Beierle, who had posted videos online complaining about the “collective treachery” of women and suggesting they should be “punished” with “crucifixion”.

A new terrorism database analysis shows almost two-thirds of the terror attacks in the United States last year were carried out by right-wing extremists.

Researchers and journalists for the news site Quartz said they used data compiled by the Global Terrorism Database that has tabulated terrorist events around the world since 1970. The database is supported by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism (START), affiliated with the University of Maryland.

“A Quartz analysis of the database shows that almost two-thirds of terror attacks in the (United States) last year were tied to r****t, anti-Muslim, h********c, anti-Semitic, f*****t, anti-government, or xenophobic motivations,” its posting says.

Americans With No Abilities (ANAA) Democratic Senators are considering introducing legislation that will provide new benefits for many more Americans. The Americans With No Abilities Act is being hailed as a major legislative goal by advocates of the millions of Americans who lack any real sk**ls and ambition. "Roughly 50 percent of Americans do not possess the competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society," said California Sen. Kamala Harris. "We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability (POI) to be ridiculed and passed over. With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they have some idea of what they are doing." In a Capitol Hill press conference, Nancy Pelosi pointed to the success of the U.S. Postal Service, which has a long-standing policy of providing opportunity without regard to performance. At the state government level, the Department of Motor Vehicles also has an excellent record of hiring Persons with No Ability (63 percent). Under the Americans With No Abilities Act, more than 25 million mid-level positions will be created, with important-sounding titles but little real responsibility, thus providing an illusory sense of purpose and performance. Finally, the Americans With No Abilities Act contains tough new measures to make it more difficult to discriminate against the non-abled, banning, for example, discriminatory interview questions such as, "Do you have any sk**ls or experience that relate to this job?" "As a non-abled person, I can't be expected to keep up with people who have something going for them," said Mary Lou Gertz, who lost her position as a lug-nut twister at the Toyota plant in Georgetown, KY due to her inability to remember "righty tighty, lefty loosey". "This new law should be real good for people like me. I'll finally have job security." With the passage of this bill, Gertz and millions of other untalented citizens will finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. Said Sen. Dick Durbin, II: "As a senator with no abilities, I believe the same privileges that elected officials enjoy ought to be extended to every American with no abilities. It is our duty as lawmakers to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her inadequacy, with some sort of space to take up in this great nation and a good salary for doing so." NOTE: This message was approved by Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Diane Feinstein, Kamala Harris, Maxine Waters, Cory Booker, Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer, Jeff Flake, Chris Van Holland, AO-C, Elizabeth Warren & Nancy Pelosi........ all of whom certainly are; Americans With No Abilities whatsoever!!

Good article.

Lara Logan, former correspondent for “60 Minutes,” caused a stir last week when, on a podcast called “Mike Drop,” she said that too many in the media have become “political activists.” Here, she explains to The Post how one-sided reporting has undermined the credibility of the press.

I was a working journalist before I could legally drink. On Saturday nights in Durban, South Africa, when most kids in high school were partying with friends, my last job was to hand deliver first-edition copies of the Sunday newspaper where I worked to the police station, the fire station, the hospital and the morgue.

It was a violent time in South Africa. The people had risen up against the injustice of Apartheid to fight for freedom and the region where I grew up was one of the bloodiest. So I persuaded the guys on night shift at the morgue to break the rules and tell me how many dead bodies they had received. I asked so many questions, they gave in and let me count the bodies myself. It mattered because no one knew how many people were dying every night in the political violence. The police had a habit of clearing the dead from the streets so the government could hide the t***h.

But on that one night, every week, in that one place, I knew the t***h. And no one could take it from me because I learned it first hand.

I do my job today, some 30 years later, the same way I did it then: with an open mind, an open heart and a million questions. There is nothing more human than opinions and bias. To say we have none is dishonest. But what we do have as professional journalists is a simple standard to get us past that: two first-hand sources — question everything and independently verify. I didn’t invent this — I inherited it from people like Edward R. Murrow and I will keep passing it on.

Journalists are not activists. We may share the passion for a particular cause, but our job is to follow the facts wherever they may lead. We can’t ignore something that reflects badly on a noble cause, as an activist might. We have to care about the means as much as the end because our duty is to search for the whole t***h.

Nor are we lawyers in a court of law, cherry-picking facts to prove our case. Fortunately, there is only one t***h. How we feel about it, how we perceive it, those things are subjective but the t***h itself is not.

Above all, we are not propagandists or political operatives. That is not our job.

I have profound respect for my colleagues and for what we as journalists are at our best. Today, as a whole, we are not at our best. Just ask people in towns and cities across this country, as I do. Everywhere I go, people tell me they have lost faith in journalism. It comes from all people, all walks of life and all political stripes.

Frankly, I don’t blame them. Responsibility for this begins with us.

It is a fact that the vast majority of journalists in this country are registered Democrats. The colleges we come from are similarly dominated by one political ideology. This matters today because the reporting has become so one-sided. As we try to figure out why people have lost faith in our profession, let’s start by being honest about who we are.

I would feel the same way if the media were tilted in the opposite direction. It is the one-sided nature of this fight that disturbs me. Is that what the founding fathers had in mind when they wrote the first amendment?

We dismiss conservative media outlets for their political bias, but we don’t hold liberal media outlets to the same standard. Many journalists who claim to be objective have publicly taken a political stand, saying the urgency of the time justifies a departure from journalistic standards. Yet they ask us to believe their reporting is still unbiased?

It is not hard to find examples of how far we have strayed from reporting standards in the Trump era. A simple example is Time Magazine falsely reporting on President Donald J. Trump’s first day in office, stating that he’d removed a statue of Martin Luther King from the Oval Office. The news went v***l. But the writer did not follow the most basic rule of journalism — pick up the phone and ask the White House if it was really gone, and why? The writer late wrote a correction on his Twitter account, stating “The MLK bust is still in the Oval Office. It was obscured by an agent and door.”

Did this feed a r****t narrative Time and the reporter wanted to advance and believe, so no fact check was needed? I don’t know — did it? We all make honest mistakes and I am no exception. I’ve made a few of my own in three decades of reporting. But consider this mistake alongside 70 other examples on a running list compiled by independent investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson, who is one of the bravest journalists I know. Is it a mistake when media outlets keep beating the same drum over and over? With our credibility as low as it is today, it’s a question worth asking.

I will be attacked for writing these words. But I welcome these attacks because it tells me my words matter. And I speak on behalf of all journalists who believe in standing up for the t***h and honest, independent reporting. Most do not feel free to speak publicly. We live in a free country yet as journalists we are not free.

They can’t attack the substance of our work, so propaganda machines like David Brock and his staff at Media Matters for America, smear, manipulate and invent false narratives driven by their well-funded political agenda. With armies of bots and a stable of journalists that parrot their talking points, they silence and intimidate. They use our criticism of unfairness and bias to falsely accuse us of being conservative. But all of us know, the louder the attack, the closer we are to the t***h.

No one owns me. No party, no organization, no corporation. We are free because freedom lives in us. No one gives it to you or takes it away.

And we are strongest when we stand together.

Confidence in Judges Is in the Gutter and We Need Term Limits To Fix It

Lifetime appointments are a bad idea.

A little more than three years ago, Gallup released the results of an important poll which went largely under-reported and unnoticed. It indicated that Americans’ confidence in federal judges had hit an all-time low, with only 53 percent of respondents indicating they had a fair amount of trust or more in them. It’s hard to imagine that recent events have bolstered that statistic.

In comparison, 55 percent to 60 percent of American colonists were likely either neutral or supportive of the British crown on July 4, 1776, when the Founders signed The Declaration of Independence. So, it appears that today’s federal judges enjoy about the same amount of popular support in America as King George III did at the time of the Revolution.

Further, when the Constitution was ratified in 1788, thereby giving federal judges their lifetime appointments (at least during times of “good behaviour”), the average life expectancy in our newfound republic may only have been 36 (and some may also argue that, for obvious reasons, any tyrant occupying a lifetime position in public office back then quite possibly could have expected to live nowhere near that long). In contrast, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will turn 86 next month.

But more important still, the lifetime appointment system simply hasn’t been working out. Perhaps it’s just human nature: power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

So, it’s not exactly surprising that abuse of the lifetime appointment system, which by design all but absolves federal judges of personal responsibility for their actions both on and off the bench, seems far more common today than the supposed benefit to justify that system’s existence. The argument is that judges need protection from the capricious whims of politics and popular opinion in order to make unpopular yet legally — and morally-correct decisions.

Indeed, this insulation did not lead the U.S. Supreme Court to issue such a forward-looking ruling in favor of Dred Scott, the escaped s***e who was ordered back into servitude after what is widely described as the worst decision in the highest court’s history. Nor does it seem to have led to the upholding today of the very simple, plain and obvious wording of the Second Amendment and the remainder of The Bill of Rights.
