Ezekiel pronounced God’s coming judgment upon the king of Tyre. A quick glance, however, shows that this title applies to some person other than the historical king of Tyre.

Ezekiel made eight declarations of the king’s perfections. These statements could not be true of just any king. And it is very unlikely that any sane ruler would ever lay claim to all these statements. Some rulers have claimed to be divine, but who has ever claimed…

• To have been in the Garden of Eden?
• To have been on the holy mount of God and walked in His very presence among the fiery stones?
• To have been ordained one of God’s cherubim, one of the angelic beings who live in His presence and guard His holiness?

Any ruler who made such claims would be considered completely insane and immediately removed from power. But if these verses look beyond the historical king of Tyre to someone else, who is the person?

I conclude that Ezekiel was describing Lucifer (Satan). He was describing the power, the force, that lay behind the behavior of the historical king of Tyre. However, the Lord was expressing His broken heart over the power of Satan to destroy the lives of men and nations. Thus, He instructed Ezekiel to weep (take up a lament) for the king of Tyre.

Ezekiel described the king’s (Satan’s) perfection (vv.12-15a). Notice exactly what Scripture says:

• The king (Satan) was the model of perfection (v.12). No other created being was like this person. He was the prototype (pattern) of all created beings.
• The king (Satan) was the perfection of wisdom and beauty (v.12b). Possessing the fullness of wisdom and astounding beauty, this person was apparently the highest created being in the universe.
• The king (Satan) had been in Eden, the very garden of God (v.13b). Keep in mind that Eden is the symbol of God’s glorious creation. Thus, this person had been given an exalted position in the magnificent creation of God.
• The king (Satan) had been adorned with precious stones (v.13b). All nine of these stones were in the breastplate of the high priest (Ex. 28:15-20; 39:10-13). This fact suggests that God had originally created this person to serve Him in some priestly function.
• The king (Satan) had been assigned to his position on the very day he was created (v.13c). This person’s ministry had begun immediately.
• The king (Satan) had been ordained to be a guardian cherub (v.14). The cherubim are apparently the highest created angelic beings (1:5-14; 10:15-20; Gen. 3:22-24; Ex. 25:17-21; 26:1, 31; 1 Kings 6:23-29; Rev. 4:6-9; 5:6-14; 6:1-11; 14:3; 15:7; 19:4). They live in the very presence of God Himself and are the guardians of His holiness (10:1-7).
• The king (Satan) had been on the holy mount and walked in God’s very presence (v.14b). The holy mount is the place where God’s throne is, which means it is heaven itself.
• The king (Satan) had once been blameless (v.15a). After his creation, this person lived a blameless and perfect life for some time before he committed sin.

But the day came when the king (Satan) sinned. He became violent, and God discovered wickedness was in him (vv.15b-16a). His sin was the product of his own will, and it arose from the p***e in his heart. Thus, p***e was the sin for which God condemned him. In comparing these verses with other Scripture, note these three facts:

• The king (Satan) was ordained to be a mighty cherub, one of the few angelic beings given the privilege of living right next to God and guarding His holiness (v.14). Satan is said to be the god of this world, the prince of the power of the air, which suggests he is a mighty angelic being with enormous power (2 Cor. 4:4; Eph. 2:2).
• The king (Satan) had been in the Garden of Eden (v.13a). Satan is called that old serpent who was in the Garden of Eden and who tempted Adam and Eve (Rev. 12:9).
• The king (Satan) was perfect until God found wickedness in his heart (vv.15-16a). Satan’s wealth was the root of his greed and violence in dealing with others. His p***e was the sin for which he was condemned and it is the sin that church leaders are strongly warned to guard against.

The king’s (Satan’s) punishment was fourfold (vv.16b-19). First, he was expelled from the mount of God, from the fiery stones before God’s holy presence (v.16b). God expelled him from heaven because he had become proud of his assigned position and because he corrupted his wisdom.

Second, the king (Satan) was cast to the earth and made a spectacle before other rulers (v.17). Isaiah discussed this fact in detail in Isaiah 14:3-23). The king (Satan) suffered this horrible fate because of his many sins and because he defiled his sanctuaries, both the holy place of worship and the position God assigned him.

Third, the king (Satan) was going to be consumed by the fire of God’s judgment (v.18b).

Fourth, the king (Satan) was going to come to a horrible end and no longer exist on earth (v.19). Note that his end would utterly shock the nations of the world. The prophet Isaiah gave an excellent description of this judgment in Isaiah 14:3-23.

Conclusion: This supports my conclusion that God did not create evil. Although I should have been clearer and stated that God created perfect beings who through their free will chose SIN and evil.
