Report: Israel spied on Iran-U.S. talks and shared information with lawmakers

UPDATE: President Obama addressed the report on Tuesday. Head here for more.

Israel obtained sensitive information about the nuclear talks between Iran and the United States and turned it over to members of Congress, the Wall Street Journal is reporting. The insider details came from “confidential” briefings from U.S. officials as well as from “informants, diplomatic contacts in Europe and eavesdropping,” the paper said.

Citing “current and former officials,” the paper said the “spying operation was part of a broader campaign by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to penetrate the negotiations and then help build a case against the emerging terms of the deal.”

Boehner 'not aware' of information passed from Israelis to Congress(0:49)
While addressing members of the media Tuesday, House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) said he was "baffled" by a report alleging Israel shared intelligence on the U.S. and Iran with members of Congress. (AP)
The Journal, in its Tuesday edition, reported the “espionage” did not concern the White House “as much as Israel’s sharing of inside information with U.S. lawmakers and others to drain support” for a possible deal with Iran to rein in Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing of international sanctions.

The White House learned of the operation, the paper reported, when U.S. intelligence agencies “intercepted communications among Israeli officials that carried details the U.S. believed could have come only from access to the confidential talks, officials briefed on the matter said.”

Israel denied the charges, according to the Journal, which quoted a “senior official” in Netanyahu’s office calling the allegations “utterly false.”

But the Journal said its story was based on interviews with “more than a dozen” officials, including Israeli diplomats, intelligence officials and lawmakers.

Relations between the administration of President Obama and the government of Israel have become openly hostile since Netanyahu accepted an invitation from House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to address the U.S. Congress earlier this month.

The chill deepened during Netanyahu’s come-from-behind election victory last week. Just before the vote — with polls showing Netanyahu’s Likud party trailing — Netanyahu reached out to his right-wing base by appearing to reject the possibility of a Palestinian state. On election day, he then appealed to his backers to cast ballots to counter “droves” of Arab Israeli voters who likely supported his challenger.

Netanyahu later tried to massage his stance on the the so-called two-state solution — the cornerstone of peace efforts led by Washington — by saying he could support the idea if the region’s security situation improved in the future. He also sought to calm anger among Israel’s Arab population. But a prominent Arab-Israeli politicians, Ahmed Tibi, said Tuesday that many rejected Netanyahu’s outreach as “not an honest apology.”

If the Journal’s story is accurate, there were plenty of other reasons for the tension as well.

It quoted a “senior U.S. official briefed on the matter,” saying that it is “one thing for the U.S. and Israel to spy on each other. It is another thing for Israel to steal U.S. secrets and play them back to U.S. legislators to undermine U.S. diplomacy.”

On Monday, the White House chief of staff, Denis McDonough, reinforced the predictions that the Obama administration could be making recalculations in its dealings with Netanyahu.

“We cannot simply pretend that these comments were never made,” McDonough said.

In a speech to J Street, a Washington-based Israel advocacy group that is critical of Netanyahu, McDonough said Israel faced “total isolation” from the international community if it refuses to consider ending an “occupation that has lasted more than 50 years” in Palestinian lands.

Talks over Iran’s nuclear program are scheduled to resume later this week in Switzerland in a final push to reach a general framework before a self-imposed March 31 deadline.

Details of the possible deal have not been made public, but among the chief aims is seeking to limit and closely monitor Iran’s uranium enrichment capacities as part of efforts to keep Tehran from moving toward a nuclear weapon.

The West and its allies worry that Iran could one day upgrade its production of nuclear fuel to make material for an atomic weapon. Iran insists it only seeks reactors for energy production and isotopes for medical applications.

WHATS NEXT. Israel gives Iran a Nuc to prove they have one?

Oh I understand, it is like Obamacare. No one needs to know what is in the thing until after it becomes a burden on Americans. And I am sure that everyone can make good decisions based on no information.... just a shot in the dark. Back in the day, we called this a pig in a poke. It is not possible to keep things quiet if all of Congress is told all the steps along the way through a deal. It is undermining like giving the name of a sure-winning horse in order to bring down the odds. It is self-defeating if you've bet on the game.

It was necessary for President Obama to have most aspects covered before giving the game away which would happen if all of Congress were informed throughout the talks. Spreading the word all through the discussion is not good diplomacy. Did you expect him to show his hand to everyone at the table?

I wouldn't want to play any game with you guys who would give away my quarterback's signals to the other team.

Congress would be told when the deal was decided upon. If they don't see the finished package, how can they possibly make any decision. There's that story about "too many cooks . . . ."

It is in a way SAD that I am grateful to Israel for "spying on us" and passing on to some members of Congress what is being hidden by this most non-transparent of "Presidents"; this clearly Anti-Semitic and ultra-leftist liar.

Congress is supposed to know what is going into our Treaties.

How long will Ayatollah Obama continue whining that Netanyahu WON re-election?

How long -- and in how many ways - will the Fuehrer Obama continue to side-step Congress at every turn?

Obamacare was presented to Congress and, as I said before, they probably didn't read it as is usual for Congress. The comment was made sarcastically referring to Congress' usual laziness in reading any bills besides their own. In many cases most in Congress simply sign it as they were told to do. They deserved a bit of sarcasm on that tack as, if they were interested in the proffered bill, they would have read it but most probably hadn't. I don't know how you feel, but I don't like a political group simply voting as a bloc. I would prefer my representative to vote independent of the party and according to the wishes of his/her constituents.

Half right, Pelosi had a secret closed door vote Dems only. ....not one GOP was present and/or able to vote up or down. This method is a travesty on our political system. Then of course Harry Reid, with a dominant senate stamped the approval.

Famous words of Pelosi " let's vote on it, so we can see what's in it".
Obamanationcare, has little to do with health care, it's about government take over. We already had medicare for the poor and low income. What we didn't have was the ability to purchase health insurance outside of the state you live in, which would have driven competition and lower cost, a form of existing health problems but not what is in the bill today. It is exactly like never paying for home owners insurance for 20 years, having your house burn down, then purchasing home owners insurance and having a new home built, driving up cost for everyone else. We didnt/ still don't have controls on the FDA allowing small companies to compete in pharmaceuticals and the advancement of new drugs due to the millions of $$$$ for approval. Which most everything I just wrote was in the gop plan, plus more to increase coverage, lower cost, unlike obamacare that increased on average $2,500, and a massive tax burden eating up 4 what any other nation has as a % of their GDP

Obamacare was presented to Congress as a done deal. There were no Republican Amendments allowed, period. This is unheard of. The House and Senate were both controlled by Democrats, who forced a vote on this legislation before anyone had time to read it. It was passed in both the House and Senate without a single Republican vote. The Dems own this one, lock, stock and barrel. You meant you don't like Republicans voting as a block. It seems Democrats are not so problematical.
