When I started my University education the professors constantly belittled white students with Southern drawls and demanded that we loose them. And this was at a predominantly white Southern university.

In the 1950s when my Aunt and Uncle moved to Illinois my Aunt was told to call a particular local business about a job. Every time she called they informed her that there were no positions open. This was despite weekly classified ads looking for employees.

Finally a "Smart" Yankee told my Aunt to apply in person. She was hired on the spot. When she asked if a position had just opened up the Illinois company told her "No, we just though from your Southern drawl that you were a (insert the N word) and in Peoria, Illinois we don't hire (re-insert the plural N word)."

I will say this from personal experience, when it comes to pure old ignorance, provincialism, and intellectual sloth, once you scratch the surface nothing can hold a candle to the average New Yorker. The reason being many Big Apple residents have never been outside of their home burrow, or experienced anything of the outside world. The average New Yorker truly makes the Banjo picker on the movie Deliverance look like Albert frigging Einstein. New York sophistication is just another URBAN myth like 10 foot Alligators living in the sewer.

PS: A Boston Southey is just as bad.

No ! what the Students who talk funny to this Professor, just tell the world, " I have a true Southern Accent ." Leave it at that ! We all talk funny. This professor needs to clean out his ears and listen to his students. Long as the student does their College work right, who cares what I sound like !

I have hired hundreds of technicians, sales people and managers. My #1 criteria has, is and always will be an ability to communicate. If I needed someone who could speak Spanish, Arabic or Hmong I did so, but they still had to be able to communicate well with co-workers.

Your experience is similar to mine. As a young soldier in 1956 I was transiting from one duty post to another. My route was through Chicago and a military buddy persuaded me to accompany him on a visit to his family in Gilman Il., about 60 miles north of the City. He was under some discomfort while we were on the train and he finally broached what was on his mind. He asked me to use an Anglicized version of my name because the people in his town didn't like Italians. He also cautioned me not to tell anyone that I was a Catholic.

We arrived and walked through the town and as cliche as it sounds there was a railroad track cutting through the town. Just across the tracks were the worst looking shacks you could imagine. My buddy told me that this was where the black people (N....) lived and they were not permitted to live elsewhere. As we walked along the sidewalk a black man approaching stepped off the walkway into the street and stayed there until we passed. I asked what that was about and was told "They better get off the walk if they know whats good for them".

This same buddy had a Mexican girlfriend and when it was time for us to be mustered out of the service, he was agonizing over having to leave the woman he loved because his family would never accept her.
