Of course, this is Paul speaking, who was quite proud that he was a citizen of Rome. I don't think Jesus or his brother James, who became the true leader of the movement Jesus began after Jesus' crucifixion, would have spoken as highly of the Roman government, which ruled Judea in Jesus' and Paul's day. (Though Jesus did say, "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God what is God's," I think his point was to make people think about whether anything that Caesar claimed as his didn't really belong to God.)

I also don't think Thomas Jefferson would have agreed with you. I don't agree with those on this site who believe that now is the time to violently overthrow our democratically elected government, but I agree with Jefferson that "governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

I understand how frustrating it is for you that half the people in this country don't agree with you. I have that same feeling, but from the other side. That being the case, maybe we are just going to have to learn to live in peace with each other and try to get something done for the good of the country. There is plenty to do, and unlike some people, I am not ready to wait for Armageddon to solve our problems.

I believe this number includes beneficiaries of public housing programs, Medicaid, "other cash assistance" programs, and the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program as well as beneficiaries of TANF, SSI and SNAP. And I doubt that the 54,000,000 on food stamps is an ADDITIONAL number. I suspect a lot of these people are on "welfare" AND qualify for food stamps.

I agree that this number is far too large, but what needs to be done to change it? Just letting kids starve because their parents are unable or unwilling to work doesn't seem like a solution to me. I think it is part of the problem that is also illustrated by the number of able-bodied people who are not working and not looking for work. We need to find a way both to create more jobs and to change the culture that says a life without work is okay. Not easy to do. In spite of the bad rap Johnson's "war on poverty" gets, I think there is some evidence that it was making a difference. But we seem to have given up trying to solve the problem. It's easier just to complain about the lazy good-for-nothings who aren't like us.

You missed some very important other scriptures, I think, like: "As much as within you lies, be at peace with all men." The rest of the quote you used states we are to obey the govt. so we can live peaceful lives. At no time throughout the Bible does God tell us 'subject yourselves to evil'. And we have excellent examples of that when David killed Goliath; when Moses killed the guard who was striking one of the Israelites; when God commanded that all the Hittites, and a few other nationalities in a certain area be destroyed (every man, woman, and child). In most instances it was due to the encroachment of 'other gods' tainting the hearts and minds of God's people. When we look at today and the creeping in of Chrislam, and the possible overtake by Muslims (and they insist one become a dimi to their religion) - sorry, but I have to side with God as I will take a stand against them, even if it means violence. And I do believe that is our responsibility to keep ourselves pure from evil. We are not to go looking for it; but we certainly are not to bow down to it either.
